1 Volunteer ADOPT ICAS DONATE Sally Beebe Volunteer of the Year Sally Beebe... Simply the Best Hundreds of people were nominated, but in the end it was our own Sally Beebe who took the prize. Sally is this years recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award given by the National Animal Control Association. This prestigious award is given for dedication, vision and compassion. Sally will be receiving her award at the National Conference in St. Louis, Missouri in May. Sally is also the recipient of the Ingham County Animal Shelter s Hope Award. She received the award at our March Humanitarian Awards banquet. The Hope award is given for the person who promotes and inspires humane values throughout the community. 2 I need a home events annually which have resulted in an almost 9% increase in adoptions in Her impact is visible each and everyday in Ingham County. She raises funds for shelter improvements that include an expanded cattery, new washers & dryers, new dog kennels, grooming room, expanded medical room and outdoor exercise area and much more. If you ever doubted one person could make an impact - doubt no more. Sally has been a volunteer since She is simply the best! Adopt-A-Thon 2009 Mark your calendars - May 16 and May 17, 2009 is our next 30 hour Adopt-A-Thon. We need lots of volunteers for the event. Volunteers are needed for the dogs, cats, vaccine clinic, set-up and other areas. It will be held at Fifth Third Bank on Jolly Road in Okemos. Last year was a great success with more than 70 animals finding homes. Please contact: Help with dogs - Wanda swwabjco@peoplepc.com Help with cats - Cindi kjmcjm@cablespeed.com Help with volunteer and info. booth - Jamie jmcaloon@ingham.org Help with set up on May 15 or other areas during the event - Teresa ac_carter@ingham.org. Hope to see you there. Zelda is a beautiful lab mix that was in a foster home where it was discovered that she is housebroken, does well with school age kids, is very smart, will learn best with food motivation, is a frisbee and fetching queen, and eager to please with her lab personality. She would be best as an only dog since she didn't like sharing food items or areas with her canine foster siblings. She also did not want to be friends with the family guinea pig, so she would do best in a home where she does not have access to prey animals. She is an active dog that will REQUIRE lots of exercise and human interaction daily. If you are interested in adopting or fostering Zelda, please contact the shelter! Home requirements: Humans over the age of 8, no other dogs or prey animals, willing to use positive training. Feline Fix It Day April 26, 2009 for low income Ingham residents Contact Teresa at ac_carter@ingham.org to volunteer.
3 Ask Bobble Humanitarian Awards 2009 Hope Award Sally Beebe Outreach Award Deb Allen Sherri Cooper Dear Bobble, Dr. Valerie Chadwick was awarded the Humanitarian Compassionate Veterinarian Award. How does she help the animals? Thanks, Izzy On any given day Dr. Chadwick examines 26 dogs, 18 cats; rebandage a nasty bullet wound on a hound dog, cleans out an ulcerated eye in a cat, see a dozen or more clients at MSU Small Animal Clinic, instruct pre-vet students in the lab, and then makes a mad dash to downtown Lansing to wait patiently in the hallway of a court room to testify against a man who starved his two dogs to dearth. And that s all before lunch! If she is not at MSU performing her day job, she s helping the shelter staff assess animals and treat the scores of injured and ill that arrive on the hour each day. She has been our greatest source of pro-bono opportunities with area specialists who perform amazing operations that cost very little, thanks to her relentless begging and friendships. I think she used every favor this past year as the need was so great for so many animals--and each time we ask her again and again can you help us get this surgery done--she d shrug and say I ll try. And the next day we have an appointment. Most of her good work is unknown to most and very few will ever know all she does for no reason except to help the animals. 4 Short and Tall Tales Volunteer Stories Shelter Just Another Day at the Shelter By Deb Allen Jesse (shelter staff) was looking down the hall toward me and another volunteer. Do you need something Jesse? I m looking for Gail with the sugar gliders. Sugar gliders - Is that a donut? No, it s like a flying squirrel. Gail (shelter staff) was taking one of the sugar gliders out of the live trap when it s claw got caught on her sleeve. Just as she freed it s claw the little animal took off gliding through the air and landed in a pile of stuff stored in the corner. They search through the pile but couldn t find the little rascal. That night they put out a live trap and caught the animal. Later someone identified the animals as flying squirrels, not sugar gliders. Michigan has two species of flying squirrels, both nocturnal. Sugar Gliders are small nocturnal marsupials native to Australia and Indonesia. They are kept as pets in our area. A small snapping turtle (Hot Lips) was resting quietly in an aquarium, a sassy parrot waited for a treat and three gold fish were checking out their new digs. And then there were the chickens and sheep. Our Animal Cops rescued numerous chickens and two sheep from a small farm. One of the sheep was frozen to the ground and had to be chipped out of the ice. The animals had no food or water. But the shelter took care of them, and now they were all warm and feed. And a few days later one of the chickens laid an egg. The flying squirrels were released, the snapping turtle is being care for until it is warm enough to release, the parrot, gold fish, chickens and sheep were adopted. Just Another Day at the Shelter

6 A Story of Boo Boo By Maria Vandenboom, Foster Care Coordinator I've never seen a dog take to another dog like Boo Boo took to Lucky. The moment I brought her tiny shell of a body into the house, BooBoo (boxer mix foster puppy) pushed his way through the pack and was all over her. Not in an aggressive way, but like a Mother being reunited with an orphaned baby. He groomed her for 1/2 hour and would not leave her side. He was either lying right next to her or on top of her as if to keep her warm. He kissed her throughout the night as if he was letting her know she was not alone. He then laid in front of her food plate so none of the other dogs could get to her food. He didn't touch her food but formed a barrier so no one else could. He never guards his own food or even rawhides, but protected hers so only she had access to it. These animals never cease to amaze me. Lucky & Bluebelle have found forever homes. Lots of foster homes are needed for dogs, preceding our May Adopt-A-Thon. Contact Cyndy at the shelter if you can help cknoop@ingham.org.
7 No time to volunteer, but you would still like to help the animals. Check our website for ideas. A very special donation opportunity is our Memorial and Honorarium Display Wall in the Shelter Lobby. See below for details.
