Velvet & Trophy - Sale Catalogue - Tuesday 9th January 2018 Viewing at 12pm, Auction at 1pm STEVE BLANCHARD PEEL FOREST ESTATE 1 BRAKE ROAD, RD 22, GERALDINE 7992 NEW ZEALAND steve@pfe.nz

STEVE'S COMMENTS Welcome to our 2018 Velvet and Trophy Sire Sale To say it has been an interesting year is truly an understatement. We had the wettest winter I ve seen in 30 years here in Canterbury, followed by a cool, dry spring that turned into a very dry November and early December. But the rains have come and hopefully we have turned a corner. Having said all that, velvet continues to be a strong seller and venison is on a high so deer farming is in a pretty good space right now. Velvet The lift we are seeing in young deer velvet weights is very pleasing. The 3yr old English deer do cut their velvet late which makes it hard to get our heads into the local competition (having only cut 3 by then) but it does ensure they are growing in warmer temperature and hopefully better feed. The average velvet weight for the stags catalogued this year is 7.3kg. A good lift from last year and still maintaining style and length that we strive to breed here at Peel Forest. Walton is again strongly represented and his style of velvet is something we feel is important to maintain good distance above and below the tray with heavy round beam. Walton won the of 3 at the SCNO velvet competition this year with three 4yr old stags. A pretty good effort considering we had sold the best ones at the sale last year and 14 of the second cut were sold privately. The stags this year (ex one) are Pure English with the majority being predominantly Warnham blood. Having purchased the Pampas Heights herd recently this will give us a greater number of Pure Warnham deer as well as diversity in bloodlines which will enable us to offer the biggest line of pure bred English deer here in New Zealand. Stags for sale have all been blood tested for Johnes with the English deer showing the highest resilience. We strongly believe purebred deer breed true to type and give the greatest hybrid vigour when out crossed with other strains. Trophy Its always exciting to see the advancements the 3yr olds make from their 2yr old head in just 12 months. This years line-up are exceptional and I know without doubt we have made a great leap forward in antler mass, score and wow factor with the 3yr olds offered. We offer different bloodlines, some new young s represented and some embryo brothers from a proven hind line. You be the judge on the day.. If you would like to view any of the stags or velvet prior to sale day please don t hesitate to ring me. Our door is always open. Regards, Steve Blanchard

JOHNE'S RESILIENCE GROUND BREAKING JOHNE'S RESEARCH AT PEEL FOREST ESTATE The annual cost of Johne s disease to the New Zealand deer industry in 2011 was estimated at least $8.8 million. Even more importantly, the cost of Johne s disease on farms with heavily affected deer herds can be huge, ruining the pro tability of your deer unit. For the last ten years Peel Forest Estate has made a serious commitment to breeding Johne s Resilient deer on the property and is leading the way with an industry breaking research project with Dr Frank Grif n, Head of Microbiology at the University of Otago. There have been huge gains in the research by not only reducing the presence of Susceptible animals but more importantly identifying Resilient bloodlines. This breakthrough is even more important due to the fact Colin Mackintosh from Agresearch has identi ed the powerful heritability of either Susceptibility or Resilience to Johne s in deer. The heritability of the Johne s resilient trait ensures the ability of Peel Forest Estate stags to ght the disease on our client s properties. In Colin Mackintosh's paper following his trial on heritability he comments the offspring of the S (Susceptible) was signi cantly more severely affected than those of the R (Resilient). Most of the Resistant, but not the Susceptable, showed evidence of resolving lesions and a reduction in M.A.P (Johne's) after challenge. The paper went on to say the 5 male offspring gained signi cantly more weight than the 9 S offspring over the 49 week study (70.3kg versus 59.8kg) despite being 2.8kg lighter at the start. This difference was statistically signi cant and even more signi cant because the S had a higher breeding value for 12 month weight. Further to this research Peel Forest Estate are now going to look into the possible improvements to meat yield and quality from progeny with Johne s resilience as well as the proven on farm productivity bene ts. All stock at Peel Forest Estate are continually challenged by Johne s which has resulted in a radical test-cull, natural and genetic selection for Johne s resilience. The heritability of the Johne s resilient trait ensures their ability to ght the disease on your property.

SIRE STAG CARE AND MANAGEMENT Sires are the most valuable animal in the deer herd. They carry the genetics that will determine the future production of your herd. The welfare and 12 month health programme cannot be compromised if you wish to get the best from your s. ON ARRIVAL Stress is at a high level when your new stag arrive at your property. He has left familiar surroundings and mates he has lived with in a social group of around 40 animals of the same age. His arrival can be made a lot less stressful if you follow a few simple rules. 1. Your stag should arrive as early as possible to settle in (preferably before February) 2. Having a few animals in the yard when the stag is unloaded is important. He should be introduced to a small group of similar age (10-15 animals). Never put with older stags or spikers. Ideally if the hinds he was to mate were nearby he could go directly into the mob. Early fawns should always be the aim. THE ROAR A 3 year old stag will mate hinds comfortably if he does not have to travel too far or has no competing stag nearby. When you put your stag out is your choice (the earlier the better) but be aware it can take 5-10 days to be accepted into the mob before he begins mating. It is possible to mate far more hinds than this but you risk a greater spread over calving and marked loss in body weight and performance in a young stag. When the stags are taken out of the hinds minimize ghting by preparing a safe paddock (with plenty of feed, shade and water) by taking the most dominant stag (older) rst. Avoid a very hot day. Do not put stags used for mating with ones that have not been as this can cause excessive ghting. ANIMAL HEALTH Your stag will have been drenched and coppered before leaving Peel Forest Estate. As soon as the s have settled down after the roar it is good practice to give them a drench, copper and a mineral booster. Hemo 15 is one option. This should be done no later than the end of May. He is at his most vulnerable state and parasites need to be addressed as soon as possible after the roar.

Lot # yr Antler: Trophy 7.4 Kg HA Kg DAVIDSON 7yrs HARLEY 162YELLOW MILO 7yrs 0713RD LEO 20ORANGE ADONIS 665GREEN COCO 8yrs Adonis HARRY 4yrs YB6RD 523 has the latest development of all the stags grown. It looks very thick and wide with plenty on the way. He has a split left brow, clean bays and splitting trays which will be 4 ways on the left and 3 on the right. Too early to guess his tops but will look pretty good on sale day. Impressive so far.

Lot # yr Antler: Trophy 7.2 Kg HA Kg EMPEROR 6yrs ODYSSEUS 9ys P376 ATILLA CHANCELLOR 3 x National Champion Y229 YELLOW3 GREEN7 COCO 8yrs ADONIS 0153PEL 397 is very similar to his in the shape and style of his tops. Trifurcated right tray, pronounced T4's on both sides with long scoring royals. Big head on the way.

Lot # yr Antler: Trophy 6.0 Kg HA Kg HANNIBAL 5yrs FOV MOTSUMI-DG Y553DG MORPHEUS 5yrs ZIDARN 6yrs HOWARD Y414 ADONIS W438DG SCIPIO 0497DGZ BRUSNIK Nixon Sire 918TF Motdonis Dam 707 has a super long head in every way. Bottom tynes are long and sweeping with good spacing. He goes on to a very scoopy looking cluster of tops which is still growing at the time of print. He has a pretty royal line-up of who's who on the Dam side which is sure to breed well from this background.

Lot # yr Antler: Trophy 7.0 Kg HA NA HANNIBAL 5yrs FOV MOTSUMI-DG Y553DG MORPHEUS 5yrs FOV HOWARD Y414 ADONIS W438DG SCIPIO 8yrs 0497DGZ PRINCEPHILLIP 7yrs 06619TF Madison 532 has all lower tynes splitting and large kickers coming out of both trays (not beam). Tops have a fair way to go. Looks like he'll have 12x12 at least in his royals. Pretty much a 'Deer Genetics' makeup with a little different bottom line. Big bodied stag.
