11 BEST IN SHOW First Fleet Apollo MOST SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITOR: SUMMER NIOKATIS MOST SUCCESSFUL BREEDER: CRAIGLEA JUDGES COMMENTS: The Stoney Creek Classic became a classic day for Miniature Goats in Queensland. After a rainy prequel, the day blossomed into a sunny outing that allowed everyone to to enjoy the spectacle, and a fabulous array of exquisite animals made this show a treat to all that attended. The Stoney Creek Classic was held at a breeders farm but the facilities at the event rivaled most show exhibitions. Solid shedding, covered pens and a show ring with artificial grass under a broad marquee made the event a clear winner even before the animals arrived. Everyone was a winner just to attend but the prizes that were on display for each event were a great reward for the exhibitor s effort. The display was one of the largest events the MGBA has performed in Queensland and I commend the stewarding, club organisers, committee and exhibitors for creating such a special event. It looked seamless, but that's because it was so well planned. The exhibits were impressive. The great aspect of Queensland Miniature goats is not only their competitive edge at the top of the breeding scale, but that the stock right through the line of exhibits all maintained the strength of quality and evenness of style - considering the large display it is astounding that the lines of stock had to be judged carefully from first to last. Some classes had up to 21 entries, and the concept of selection in this array of animals was daunting. The Pixies were a delight and some impressive heads were noted. I have a contention that the heads denote the strength of the animal that follows and it followed that stock selected for their strong structure in the head and ear were also selected for their body structure as prizewinning stock later in the day. My father, who also was a judge, felt he could assess a great buck as soon as the animal poked its head over the railing. In this aspect my greatest winners in the show ring were always the first heads in the feed trough, a comparison of the strength of head structure leading to the strength of body structure behind. The Pixies had it all, great bone structure, great heads and they challenged me for the top prize throughout the exhibition.

12 The Elf's were my greatest joy. They showed a great structure both in the head and body, with many of the young stock standing out in all classes. My eye was taken to the length and strength of their constitution and I believe they will be a force to reckon with in the future in Queensland. I can still picture a young Elf kid with a black wavy coat that stood with her feet planted like four corners of a table, strong and straight and daring me not to place it first. How could I not. Sometimes the aesthetic is just as important as the reality. I am intrigued as to the rarity of this breed in Australia that such a high standard could be exhibited, seems the breed has a great base to launch into the future with. The Munchkins were prolific and really epitomised that true nature of the miniature goat, strength of bone structure. They were broad and level with square stance and strong hip setting from thurls to the escutcheon. The strength of stance held true to the squareness of hocks and the open stance allowing udder development without weakness. The Munchkin were also prominent in the head classes with strong character of ear and muzzle. Without doubt, the Munchkins were the most even classes, with stock that could be given prizes (if they let me) from 1st to 5th and beyond. The Munchkins had a style and presence and it was plain that they were extremely competitive in this outing. The Nuwby's really came to the party with strong stock and even stronger claims to their status. In this show the Nuwby's were judged within their own classes to allow them to really shine as a specific breed that had an alternative structure. But the Nuwby style is a great element in the Miniature Goat world, they have elegance and length, exotic head structure and without doubt a large dose of the x factor we seek in our stock. The Nuwby exhibition took my breath when I stood back and assessed these eloquent animals. Once again the younger stock took my eye and when allowed to stand off in their laconic and regal way, they were picturesque to all that viewed them. The Nuwby's were a stand out breed at this show in more ways than one. Nigerian Dwarfs are a rarity but one of the most impressive animals that has been presented to the show ring was exhibited this day. He was agitated, imperious, unyielding and simply a buck that is etched into my memory as the single most evenly composed buck that I have been able to judge. He displayed, length, from shoulder to tail. strength through the chest, evenness of stance and a balance of neck and shoulder that composed a formidable structure that challenged any breed. He was simply breathtaking. He was placed best in show which is a first for me as I never place bucks as best in show due to their influence in breed selection placing a powerful emphasis, one that I treat as a great responsibility. But this Nigerian Dwarf was a deal breaker. And he beat a superb older doe that had consistently impressed, a powerful Nuwby that oozed elegance and an array of younger animals that were the pride of Queensland's future. In my opinion, this buck has given a big impression, let's hope his offspring live up to the qualities he exudes. To Queensland Miniature Goat Breeders, thank you for allowing a Victorian Judge up there to see the fantastic work you're doing. I must admit your stock was impressive, strong examples at the top of the order with challenging animal s right through the classes. I will remember the gentle nature of the exhibitors who only wanted to learn, not just compete. The younger members of the breed society were impressive, seeking to display their exhibitors skill in exhibition classes as well as general classes. You have a formidable future with these very competitive and 'switched on' breeders of the future. Queensland Miniature Goat Breeders should be proud not only of the stock they are developing, but the culture and the strong ethical base that they place over their burgeoning new Society. It was a great event that was created by the bonded quality of the Societies ideals. Murray Grills SHOW MANAGERS COMMENTS: What an awesome show! We had our biggest entry base ever with over 200 entries on the day. I would sincerely like to thank Rodney Surawski for his enormous generosity in hosting this show, in supplying awesome prizes, trophies and a fantastic venue. Thankyou also to Murray Grills for travelling up from Victoria to judge for us and his informative judges report. It was a great day and we all had a ball. Rosalie Convery Thank you also to the following wonderful people who have assisted in the publishing of the results for this show: Alice Oakley for typing the results. Linda Miller for photo editing. Thanks so much for your help!
