1 WEEKLY POULTRY NEWS 31 st MARCH 2017 THE POULTRY ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA INTERNATIONAL POULTRY NEWS NAMIBIA BANS IMPORTS OF CHICKEN AND CHICKEN PRODUCTS The Agriculture Ministry has called on the general public to report any suspicious cases of the illegal importation of poultry and their products to the police or veterinary officials. This comes after the ministry earlier last week announced the ongoing suspension of the importation of poultry products from countries affected by infectious bird flu. The permanent secretary in the ministry, Percy Misika, was reported saying that the general public should not panic as officials are working tirelessly to ensure that this disease does not enter Namibia. He indicated that those countries affected included Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Greece, Italy and the United States. The ban of poultry and poultry products was based on the occurrence of high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in some countries from which Namibia imports poultry and poultry products. No HPAI case has been reported in Namibia at the moment, he noted. The volume of suspended products is quite significant, as the in-transit products through Namibia to other African countries have also been affected. The PS was quoted as saying The importers are business people. As such, we expect mixed feelings from them as this affects their business operations. However, we appreciate the understanding and cooperation shown by the majority of importers during this time. Their patriotism is highly appreciated, he added. Avian influenza is a disease that has the potential to cause high mortalities in humans and poultry/birds. The disease further causes significant losses due to the deaths of infected birds. Infected countries also suffer due to trade restrictions in poultry and their products as a result of HPAI outbreaks, Misika. Source: LOCAL NEWS PAZ OPENS A TECHNICAL ADVICE SERVICES FOR POULTRY FARMERS The Poultry Association of Zambia has opened poultry technical Advice Centre which will be offering free services to the poultry farmers. The office will be opened twice in a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 09:00hrs to 12:30hrs. PAZ is also in process of opening poultry library in the next few weeks. Please visit the Association Secretariat for further details. We are situated in the showgrounds, just by the roundabout in the poultry section. The Technical Centre is located next to PAZ offices at the Old ZNFU building which is currently being run by PAZ. HATCHING SERVICES OPENS IN THE SHOW GROUNDS The hatching services for all the free ranges birds have now commenced in the show grounds by Ganizani Technology. This is a company that manufactures Poultry Incubators and has now opened a subsidiary which is called Ganizani Technology Incubation Servicers (GTIS). GTIS will offer incubation services to poultry farmers on all types of poultry eggs. GTIS will also offer Agric based consultancy (farm visits, Business plans, General Consultancy) especially in the livestock sector. GTIS had capacity to incubate up to 14,100 quail eggs and over 4500 other type of eggs (chicken, duck, turkey and guinea fowl). The office

2 will be opened from every day from Monday - Friday 08:00-17:00, Saturday 08:00-13:00. The terms for the services are as follows: Deposit of 50% amount, full payment when the hatch is above 80% and you only pay for the chicks hatched less than 80%. The local currency exhibited some signs of marginal loss against other international tradable currencies. The kwacha is now trading at ZMK 9.57 per dollar compared with the closing value of ZMK 9.62 last week. The stability of kwacha against other international tradable currencies is important for the poultry sector as key inputs in the stockfeed subsector, which is major input in poultry production, is dollar based. 3 NATIONAL AVERAGE DOC PRICES REMAINS UNCHANGED The price for the day-old broiler chicks during the week remains unchanged. The prices for the day-old broiler chick is still averaging ZMK 5.14 compared. The lowest DOC is still selling at ZMK5 while the highest is ZMK5.35. The pullets are now trading at ZMK The graph below shows the national average price trend for the broiler day old chicks. Source: Poultry Association of Zambia NATIONAL AVERAGE LIVE BIRD PRICES REMAINS UNCHANGED The national average price for live chicken in the open markets remains stable. The Live broiler bird prices are now averaging ZMK compared with ZMK recorded last week. It has to be noted that these prices differs from one district to another. Lusaka has always been posted the lowest prices now trading between ZMK 35 to ZMK 40 per live broiler bird. The X layer prices remains unchanged currently trading at ZMK On the other hand, the village chicken prices posted some gains now trading at ZMK compared with the ZMK53.34 obtained last week. 4 Source: Poultry Association of Zambia AVERAGE WHOLE DRESSED CHICKEN PRICES FOR LUSAKA The price for dressed frozen chicken records a marginal reduction during the course of the week. The average price for the whole frozen chicken in Lusaka is now trading at about ZMK per kg compared with ZMK27.07 recorded last week. It should also be noted that some frozen chicken brands in some chainstores are still on promotion. Further, it should be noted that the prices are on frozen and not fresh chicken. 5 AVERAGE PRICES FOR THE POINT OF LAY REMAINS UNCHANGED There are no changes in the prices of point of lay. The average prices have been maintained between ZMK 68 to ZMK 76 per bird. A 5% discounts is being offered for all PAZ members who purchases 1000 and above point of lay at yielding tree. Further Rosedale farm is also offering competitive prices for the point of lay. For the beginners and are interested in getting battery cages, the cage price ranges between ZMK2700 to ZMK8000 depending on the capacity and also the sources of the cages. NATIONAL AVERAGE EGG PRICES RECORDS MARGINAL INCREMENT The retail egg prices in the open market have been maintained for the seven weeks running. The retail prices in the open markets are averaging price of ZMK per tray which is ZK.02 lower than what was obtaining last week. Retail prices in some chainstores have also been maintained, averaging between ZMK28 to ZMK36 per tray of 30 eggs. In the same vein, the farm gate price is averaging ZMK24.14 compared with ZMK24.16 obtaining last week. The delivery price at Soweto, which is the chicken and egg biggest market in Lusaka, is still maintained at the same price for a seven weeks running. Medium eggs are now trading at ZMK 22 per trays, while the large eggs are trading at ZMK 24 per tray. The quail eggs prices in the chain stores remain unchanged, trading at an average price of ZMK17.49 per tray.

6 Source: Poultry Association of Zambia AVERAGE STOCK FEED PRICES REMAINS UNCHANGED SELECTED STOCKFEED INGREDIENTS The national average prices for broiler and layer feed has maintained the prices which was recorded last week. Please note also that these prices might not be a reflective of what farmers are buying in some areas due to the fact that some stockfeed Agents might be adding transport costs and other costs. Broiler starter is still trading at ZMK 225 compared while grower is averaging ZMK 218. In the same vain, the broiler finisher is trading at an average price of ZMK 212. Layer feed is still trading between ZMK and ZMK185 per 50kg bag. For those compounding their own poultry feed, the chart below outlines the prices of some of the ingredients for poultry stockfeed. The prices for all the products remains unchanged this week compared with the prices obtainde last week.these prices are obtained from Livestock Services and note that these are indicative prices which may change without notice.
