1 WEEKLY POULTRY NEWS 8 th JUNE 2018 THE POULTRY ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA INTERNATIONAL NEWS CHINA HITS BRAZIL BROILER CHICKENS WITH ANTI-DUMPING DEPOSIT BEIJING, June 8 (Reuters) - China will impose temporary anti-dumping measures on Brazilian broiler chickens from June 9, the commerce ministry said on Friday, after finding in a preliminary ruling that its domestic industry has been substantially damaged by the imports. Local firms buying Brazilian chicken will be required to pay deposits ranging from 18.8 percent to 38.4 percent of the value of their shipments, the ministry said in a statement. The measures cover products supplied by top Brazilian exporters JBS and BRF. Brazil accounted for more than 50 percent of broiler products supplied to China, the world's No. 2 poultry consumer, between 2013 and 2016; the commerce ministry said when it announced a probe of the imports last August. It added that while there was a positive trend in some areas of the domestic industry, selling prices and profits fell, and stocks increased, with the industry losing money. The findings and the anti-dumping measures will be another blow to Brazil and its poultry exporters, which are still recovering from the fallout of a food safety scandal. Last month, top global chicken exporter BRF said rising grain prices and trade bans in key markets have stymied management efforts to return the company to profit. The probe's findings also come as the United States pushes to regain access to the Chinese poultry market as part of ongoing trade talks. Broiler prices in China have significantly recovered since last year, when they fell to decade-lows after hundreds of people died from contracting the H7N9 bird flu virus. Farm gate prices of live chickens in eastern Shandong province, the country's biggest producing region, are around 8 yuan ($1.25) per kg, up substantially from last year's low of 3.5 yuan per kg. Li Jinghui, managing director of the China Poultry Association, declined to comment on the news. An anti-dumping deposit levied on sorghum from the United States in April caused chaos in the grains trade, with dozens of cargoes stranded as importers tried to resell to other markets to avoid paying the tariffs. 2 LOCAL NEWS ZAMBIA'S KWACHA TO REMAINS FIRM The kwacha is expected to remain range-bound supported by the dollar conversions to pay taxes that are due on the 14 th June As of the end of yesterday, commercial bank quoted kwacha at ZMK per dollar from ZMK10.30 quoted at the same time last week. The financial analysts anticipate that kwacha will remain more or less within the current levels, mainly driven by the demand and supply of dollars. Source Reuters Source: Bank of Zambia PRICES FOR THE DOCS STAYS FLAT The average day old chick prices remained unchanged within the week and are still trading at ZMK 6.39 per day old chick. Pullets are also trading at ZMK Some districts are still facing DoC supply challenges. Please note also that the prices of day old chick may differ depending on a number of factors such as the distance and the source supplying the day old chicks, the council levies in certain areas among others issues. 3 Source: PAZ AVERAGE LIVE BROILER PRICES RECORDS SOME MOVEMENTS The national average prices for the broiler chickens recorded some movements during the course of the week. The national live broiler bird prices are averaging ZMK36.67 from ZMK recorded last week. On the other hand, X-layer prices are still recorded some reduction with now trading at ZMK from ZMK35.65 recorded last week. The prices for the free range chickens averaged ZMK compared with ZMk56.15 recorded last week. Source: Poultry Association of Zambia

4 WHOLE DRESSED CHICKEN PRICES REMAINS UNCHANGED There were no movements on prices of frozen chickens and pieces during the course of the week. The average price for the whole frozen chicken in Lusaka is still trading at about ZMK21.54 same prices as obtained last week. The lowest price in some chain stores is still trading at ZMK per kg while the highest is on ZMK per kg. The chicken sizes are ranging between 1.2kg to 1.6kg in different stores. Please note that the prices are obtained from Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Zambeef, Melisa supermarket and Cheers Stores. Different outlets have different pricing models hence the figures displayed is an average price for all the sampled chainstores. It should also be noted that these are Lusaka prices only. Source: Poultry Association of Zambia AVERAGE PRICES FOR THE POINT OF LAY REMAINS UNCHANGED The prices for the point of lay remained unchanged during the course of the week. The average price is range between ZMK65 to ZMK74 per bird. Yielding Tree, one of the major suppliers of point of lay is offering good incentives to the farmer based on volumes. Great Guowei Farm has point of lay selling at competitive prices. Base Farm Pullet rearers also have birds available at competitive prices. For the beginners who are interested in getting battery cages, cage price ranges between ZMK2700 to ZMK8000 depending on the capacity and also the sources of the cages.

5 NATIONAL RETAIL AVERAGE EGG PRICES REMAINS UNCHANGED The retail egg prices remained unchanged during the course of the week. The retail prices in markets that are operating within Lusaka averages between ZMK to ZMK26.86 per tray for large eggs, and medium eggs while smaller eggs are trading between ZMK19.3 and ZMK22.4 farm gate price. Pullet eggs are trading at ZMK18 per tray. Further, retail prices in some Chainstores have also remained unchanged, averaging between ZMK25 to ZMK36 per tray of 30 eggs depending on the supplier and packaging. Broiler starter is still trading at ZMK179.30, broiler Grower is stil tradig at ZMK while Finisher is also averaging ZMK In the same vain, the layer feed prices remained unchanged. Pullet starter is still trading at ZMK , pullet grower is trading at ZMK Developer is trading at ZMK 136 while Layer Mash is avaraging ZMK per 50kg bag. For those compounding their own poultry feed the avarage prices have have also stayed flat.
