MPDBA NEWSLETTER Written by: Jill Crisp February 2019 NEXT MEETING March 21, 2019 March 2019 greetings from your president Thank you to all who made our annual meeting, Feb. 10 th, 2019 the success that it was. Dr. Margaret Duxbury, was excellent as was the Workin Dogs music, food, door prizes, & fellowship/peopleship. My personal welcome to Rose Hallman and Adam Morris for joining our Board. Thank you to our Board members who volunteered to stay on and to Nona, Lois, and Carol for continuing on as vice president, treasurer and recording secretary. We look forward to working together. Time now to get the good times rolling on this year s agenda. One thing always in the works is continued outreach to clubs and breeders, especially to include breeds not currently represented by Minnesota Purebred. You can be helpful by looking over the Directory to see what breeds are missing and talk to people at shows and events and invite them to participate with us to educate the public about their breed. If you have ideas or agendas for 2019, please let us know. I write this on Fat Tuesday, so if you re sharing crawdads, red beans & rice, or shrimp & grits with your pups today, then Laissez les bons temps rouler! Meaning, as the old blues-rock standard says Let the good times roll! And so may they roll for MPDBA this year. John Armour sundog4@popp.net

2019 Meeting dates The following 3 rd Thurs. we will meet at the Libby Conference Center on the State Fairgrounds: --March 21 --April 18 --May 16 --June 13 (2 nd Thursday due to Cambridge shows) -- July August 15 ANNUAL PICNIC at new Pet Pavilion --September 19 --October 17 --November 21 --December 19

Minutes of MPDBA 2018 Annual Meeting The 2018 Annual Meeting was held Feb at Helping Paws of MN Inc. in Hopkins MN. We had an excellent turn out especially in light of the snowstorm occurring. Barb Bartholomew contacted 6 vendors who had tables of their products. John Armour and his Working Dogs B and performed their original dog related songs while people were arriving and eating lunch. There was a very large lunch buffet homemade by Kris Hassig. Our speaker, Dr. Margaret Duxbury, certified veterinary behaviorist, presented a very informative and thought provoking talk. She highlighted some of the genetic factors to good temperament in puppies. She also had pictures of puppies in various situations. These pictures were great examples of what breeders can do to help puppy s mental and emotional development. Following the annual membership meeting, the board typically meets to vote on new board members and determine officers. That meeting was postponed due to the worsening storm. The board will make its decisions by . Those results will be posted in our March newsletter.

2018 MPDBA Annual Report PRESIDENT John Armour 2018 saw Minnesota Purebred do some new and innovative things. New was our first State Fair at the new Pet Pavilion. The facility was well-received, and we thank all those who gave such important information in the demos & while benching and working the information desk. Our first Junior support workshop went extremely well, details below in Wendy s report. Thank you to Jill Crisp and Denise Nord for the 2018 newsletters, and to Diane Prange and Nona Dietrich for the work they do on our website and Facebook. We ve had more traffic on each. Also thank you to our Board for their consistency in meeting attendance through the year, to Secretary Carol Ouhl, Treasurer Lois Walton and to Barb Armour, Membership Chair, for their data entry and attention to detail. Thank you also to those who ve given their time to represent us at events such as the Land O Lakes show and Responsible Dog Ownership Day. It is my hope that all Minnesota Purebred members consider becoming active in the running and representation of this club. It s fun, many times it is spent being with your friends, certainly making new friends, and it s always personally enriching and personally satisfying in getting information to the public.

MPDBA SECRETARY'S REPORT Carol Ouhl In 2018 our Board held a meeting every month of the year. The one following our club Annual Meeting January 20, 2018 was, and always is, just to decide who will fill which officer roles as time is too short for any other business. I have begun creating a few separate documents to bring our Board Minutes up to generally accepted standards. All of these new documents will take some time to complete as they require me searching back through old s, Board minutes and newsletters. It will be an ongoing process. I am doing the same for the various iterations of our Constitution and Bylaws as I am the chair of that committee. One document will contain each year's Board members with the length of term they served. Another document will contain a list of dates of our Annual Meetings and the speakers for each. A third document I began this year is keeping a running list of discussions, proposals and decisions your Board makes via as we occasionally need to address something in a more timely fashion than once a month. Examples of these would be a request to sponsor an event or booth at an event where the request and response deadline falls between Board meetings. That document contains the number of "yes" and "no" votes because not all Board members can respond in a timely fashion. It also lists whether a formal motion was made and the final decision/disposition/action taken, if any. Eventually these will be organized, formatted and also be in printed format as well as on a thumb drive that can be duplicated and kept by several Board members. Right now they are on my desktop in random lists just to begin capturing the information gathered. Respectfully submitted January 11, 2019

TREASURER Lois Walton We began the year at 24, ending at $ This represents a small increase of $ We spent $9, and had income of $10,275: $ from the State Fair and $2,275 in dues. Major expenditures include $ for the Annual Meeting, $2, for the State Fair, $1, for the Junior Event, $ for the storage unit, and $ for AKC Disaster Relief Fund for the California fires. It has been my honor to serve as your treasurer. Lois Walton Membership Barb Armour Ending 2018 gained 4 new members (2 single, 2 joint) 61 Individual/joint renewals, 24 club renewals, 4 commercial renewals, 2 members moved to Honorary status 3 members dropped 6 Inquiry applications - holding 2019 renewals will be sent out in March/April and will need to be back to membership chair by May 15.

JUNIORS COMMITTEE Chair-Wendy Olson, Members: Roberta (Bobby Moore-Reibel), Barbara Bartholomew, Adam Morris, John Armour There is a $1000 scholarship available to award this year currently taking applications. Care monies are also available to those that apply. A showmanship seminar is offered once a year focusing on showmanship including 4-H, AKC, and any junior not affiliated with the prior groups. The first Juniors Seminar was held Sept. 29 th, 2018 at Agile Canines with 4-H and AKC juniors in attendance. Tammy Lewis and Tim Peterson were the 4-H and AKC instructors respectively. The juniors had a great time working on handling skills and asking questions in each venue. After lunch, juniors were given information on show etiquette and dress before they broke for an introduction to agility by Karl Reimer. Parents were also involved throughout the day. The Committee has scheduled the seminar for 2019 to be held at Animal Inn (graciously donated by the owner) on March 30 th. Handling instructors will be Joanne Grimsrud (AKC) and Tammy Lewis(4-H). We are currently waiting to hear back from a judge. Karl Reimer is returning to do a class on agility and we will also be having Denise Nord (certified professional dog trainer and KA) to do a presentation on animal behavior. Denise was trained by Ian Dunbar and has worked with Margaret Duxbury our speaker at the 2019 upcoming Annual Meeting. March 30 th Junior Handler Event Information included in newsletter.

LEGISLATION Barbara Bartholomew No State Legislation regarding Dogs and cats came before the MN Legislature in However local governing bodies did see some ordinances debated and passed. 1. The City of St. Paul passed a humane pet store ordinance thereby banning the sale of puppies and kittens in Pet Stores. Only rescue animals can be sold/adopted in these pet stores. 2. Roseville City Council was the first to adopt an ordinance prohibiting the sale of puppies and kittens in Pet Stores. Only rescue animals can be sold/adopted from Pet Stores in Roseville. 3. Residents of Blaine are currently working to have a similar ordinance passed for a pet store in Northtown Mall.

We would love any input from you. The more frequent and diverse (yet dog related) the better our page will do. Because of the way the page has been set up, we need an administrator to post your posts. So, please send your suggested posts to Facebook sends reports of our reach. 10 STATE FAIR Krista Peterson 2018 State Fair broke an all- time attendance record with over 2 million Fair goers. With 8 of 12 days of rain many days were a challenge for us in the new pet pavilion. MPBDA volunteers once again participated with their dogs to educate people about their breed, training and answer many questions. The new pavilion was great and fairgoers liked the open feeling. The demos packed the house and were filled with action. We have some work to do for 2019 to make things better but overall a success. Thank you all for making this another successful event. COMMUNITY OUTREACH Compiled by Barbara Bartholomew MPDBA participated in many Community Outreach activities during Information on purebred Dogs, responsible breeding/breeders - as well as legislation, training and a variety of activities that involve purebred dogs has been provided to the public. Some of these programs are: 1. MPDBA at the MN State Fair. 2. Bringing dogs into classrooms. 3. Participation at the Wildlife Science Center events. 4. Information table at RDOD Responsible Dog Ownership Day 5. Participation in Grand Old Days/Paws on Grand in St. Paul. 6. Providing dogs for AKC & 4H Jrs to work with in class and the show ring. 7. A presence at local dog shows such as Land O Lakes Kennel Club Show, Cambridge and others where the general public can seek information and meet breeders. 8. Information table at the Twin Cities Cat Fanciers Show.

Minnesota's Chuck & Don's bought by New York pet company Chuck & Don's is being bought out by a pet company based in New York. The Mahtomedi-based pet supply chain, which has most of its stores in the Twin Cities metro, has been acquired by Independent Pet Partners (IPP), it was confirmed on Friday. As part of the takeover, Chuck & Don's will keep the name on all 45 of its locations, which includes 30 in Minnesota, 11 in Colorado, three in Kansas and one in Hudson, Wisconsin. In a press release, IPP said that the retailer's founders, Chuck Anderson and Don Tauer, have built an amazing business. "We like their product mix, the consistent experience that customers get in their stores, and the way they train their associates. It s just a really well run business," he said. "There are things we can bring to the table to help improve those stores, but we re going to do a lot of learning from them, as well." All well as keeping its name, all of Chuck & Don's 494 current employees will keep their jobs, while its head office in Mahtomedi will operate as co-headquarters with IPP's New York home. Anderson and Tauer founded the company in 1990, opening their first store in Eagan, Minnesota. The Business Journals reports that the retailer had actually been in the process of selling itself to its employees, a process not due to finish until 2020 at the earliest. It's not clear how the sale to IPP will affect this.
