MINNESOTA PUREBRED DOG BREEDERS ASSOCATION OCTOBER 2018 NEWSLETTER Next meeting October 18 th, Libby Center October 2018 greetings from your president. at the Fairgrounds The new Minnesota Purebred Junior support program was a great success on September 29th, Thank you to all who helped out to make it a valuable experience for everyone. Thank you also to Krista for the fine presentation and summation about the Fair at our last meeting. Through the Fair and the Junior seminar we provided a lot of great education and resources to the community. Now that they are in the past we can look to our annual meeting and the election of the Board and officers. See you on the 18th of October at the Libby Center. John Armour sundog4@popp.net
MPDBA AND THE FUTURE JUNIORS SEMINAR A HIT! By Wendy Olson, Chair of Showmanship Committee Saturday, September 29th was the first Junior Showmanship seminar put on by MPDBA and it was a smashing success! Twenty-two juniors arrived by 9 with their parents in tow to learn about showmanship and other activities that they can participate in with their dogs. We had many juniors that represented the 4H program within the state and juniors that have participated at AKC events---all received a t-shirt with the new MPDBA logo. Juniors spent the first two and one half hours with Tim Peterson (an AKC judge) and Tammy Lewis (4H showmanship instructor) honing their skills in the ring. Each junior was able to experience the similarities and differences in the 4H and AKC rings. It was very obvious both instructors did a wonderful job since the juniors in both rings were smiling. From there they moved on with their parents to a talk with Bobby Moore-Reibel----covering how to enter shows and pointing out the differences between the two venues.
Lunch was then provided and the juniors had time to eat and play with their dogs. After lunch the juniors received hand-outs on handling and proper dress for showing in showmanship or breed. When the questions were answered the juniors then got to hear about teaching their dog tricks and how that can be related to starting your dog out in agility from Karl Reimer. The juniors thoroughly enjoyed being able to work on tricks and use some of the agility equipment that Karl made available to them. Again---- we saw a lot of excitement and smiles on the faces of these juniors! When the seminar was over, each junior was given a swag bag with the MPDBA logo holding a dog toy, leash, coupons and food samples from Nutri-Source. All in all, I believe each junior had a positive day! Thank you also to Roxy and Lizzie for filling in with two juniors that could not use their own dog---- their solid temperaments make them a credit to their breed. Wayne Harmon was present under direction from AKC because AKC was made aware of this program and expressed some interest in this concept of combining 4H and AKC juniors. We are the first organization to ever do something like this----so AKC recognition is a good thing. Leona Hellesvig was there representing 4H and helped with some of the material regarding where this partnership will go!
MPDBA Minutes of Board Meeting September 20, 2018 Called to Order 7:00 pm by John Armour at Libby Center, Fairgrounds Attendance: Board members present: John Armour, Barb Bartholomew, Nona Dietrich, Judy Dove, Bobby Moore-Reibel, Wendy Olson, Carol Ouhl, Lois Walton, Cinda Waller Board Members Absent: Kris Hassig Members Present: Barb Armour, Rose Hallman, Adam, Alyssa, Daisy Morris, Krista Peterson Guests: Celia Vaerst Reports: President: John suggested we concentrate on State Fair in lieu of regular business order. He turned the meeting over to Krista Peterson. Krista: Overall the response to the new location was good. Traffic the first 2 days of the Fair was very heavy causing late arrival of some people benching. Same result occurred on the Sunday of the "Milk Run" 5k race. We had some things that had to be tweaked during the Fair. We knew that was going to be the case before the Fair started. Krista handed out a detailed chart of comments received from membership separated by sections for comments on Benching, Demo area, our Info Desk, Parking, Pavilion in general, and storage. That information with additional comments received at our meeting will be provided as a separate document to keep these minutes concise. Nona also sent a survey to membership a couple days before our board meeting. It appears she received 3 or 4 responses that were handed out at our meeting. We would like more responses from members. We will compile those and have them available at our next meeting to allow for receipt of survey from additional members. If you have any comments at all - positives and negatives, now is the time to provide them to the Board. The Board also discussed the dog bite that occurred this year from a dog that was not participating in MPDBA events. We briefly discussed the newspaper article incorrect reporting of it, the St. Paul Mayor cancelling police demos as a result, the well written from Mike Metz, President of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Mpls/St Paul. We discussed (a) additional parameters of only dogs involved in benching or doing a demo may be on premises (b) the possibility of MPDBA writing a letter to St. Paul's Mayor concerning the negative results of
cancelling the police demos (c) possibly forwarding Mike Metz's to our general membership. We discussed the injury to one of the dogs benching when it jumped up on bench before gate was still partially closed due to public surrounding the area. We also discussed protocol for non-mpdba members being in the demo area and tents. For the last couple of years we have discussed remodeling the benches to allow for entry/exit of the booths without having to maneuver thru the crowd. We tabled that discussion until we saw how our new venue worked. We will be discussing that again this year now that we have a better idea of logistics. We had a short discussion on where all our handouts for the public are stored. We have many in a file cabinet in our rented storage unit. We think that members have a lot of handouts at their home as well. We will check into consolidating those. We also discussed how we could make sure that the contract signed with the State Fair each year carries the current president's name and signature. Secretary: We dispensed with a report. However, Carol was notified of a couple errors to August minutes. One was caused by a section head not in bold font that caused a line of info to be dropped when transferring to the newsletter. There were also 2 people missed who attended the August BBQ. The original minutes have been corrected. Treasurer: Lois provided the report via prior to the meeting for our review. She also noted that she had heard we received a check from State Fair but has not seen proof of that. August beginning balance was $23,524.95; ending balance $21, Majority of the expenses were related to the Fair supplies, license, insurance and tickets. Committees: Membership: Barb A Member Applicants - Shawna & Michael Matheson, Maple Grove (Boston Terrier). Joint membership approval is on hold until Michael is able to attend a meeting so we can meet him. All other requirements are completed. Since Michael has not been able to attend our last 3 meetings resulting in them not being able to bench this year, the Board asked Barb A to ask them if they'd like to change their application to single membership that will allow their approval to proceed. Junior Handler Program: Wendy provided more detail on the September 29 seminar. They are planning for 50 but really don't know how many will attend. Wendy, Barb B, John & Barb A spoke to the 4H during their State competition. We will provide swag bags and t-shirts. Building rental fee is still outstanding. Bobby moved; Carol 2nd that a proposed budget for this event be
capped at $ Bobby really expects the cost will come in closer to $1000 but wants to be able to proceed without waiting for another vote from Board. Motion carried unanimously. Annual Meeting: Date is confirmed - Feb 10 at Helping Paws in Hopkins. Dr Margaret Duxbury, DVM, DACVB will speak on Animal Behavior Issues. Sunshine Committee - no report Unfinished Business: Tabled New Business: Tabled Adjourned at 9:10 pm. The Workin Dogs are playing the October Fest Sunday Oct. 21st from 2 till 6 at the Wildlife Science Center. We re actually doing some polkas! I ll also be representing Minnesota Purebred in some of my announcements between songs John Armour
Member profile Denise Nord, newsletter co editor I grew up with a variety of dogs and bought my first Beagle in Chelsea took me on a great journey and got me permanently hooked into dog sports. Over the years, my Beagles have earned titles in conformation, obedience, tracking, agility, lure coursing and rally. We ve had some nice wins in all areas. I have finished 6 AKC Champions and 1 AKC Grand Champion, earning group placements and specialty AOMs along the way. My current pack of 3 includes 13 year old Botti, the world s happiest dog; his 10 year old sister, Rainey, who is blind & is excelling in the sport of nose work (our next title challenge!) and 6 year old Frankie, my current superstar. Frankie is working on her MACH (Master Agility Championship) and her CDX (Companion Dog Excellent) titles. Recently, she qualified for the 2019 AKC Agility AND Rally Nationals in Tulsa, as well as the CPE (Canine Performance Events) Agility Nationals to be held in the Twin Cities area next June. All of my dogs have done photo shoot & advertising work. Here is Frankie as she currently appears at a national retail chain: When I m not doing dog stuff, I work for an electrical wholesaler as a project manager for commercial lighting installations. I also teach puppy kindergarten and competitive obedience and do behavior consults with humans and their dogs.
