It s been a really good year for the ADSA. We had our first national specialty show (Thanks to Carole!!!), our club membership numbers and more importantly the number of dogs has been steadily increasing thanks to a number of American born litters and imports. One of the important things about this club is, of course, supporting the breed first and foremost, but also supporting club members. As a breeder I know how hard it can be to find quality homes for puppies. I was very fortunate to find good homes for my last litter before they were born, and unfortunately, I had to turn a couple of individuals down as it was a small litter. In order to continue to increase the number of dogs whelped in the USA, we as members of the ADSA, need to support the few breeders who are out there by educating perspective owners about the breed and providing breeders with information on interested owners. In the future I will provide space on my webpage to announce litters to help other club breeders. I ask that breeders please send me the information you would like published once the breeding has taken place. Looking forward to this year s national specialty which will be held in Raleigh on September 5 th. This is over Labor Day weekend, so I hope we can get as good or better representation of dogs and coat type compared to this past year. One final note, Carole does a great job getting the newsletter together for the club, I know this is not an easy job as I am responsible for a newsletter for a different club. So I would encourage members to send Carole pictures of your dogs, DS stories, snippets and dog articles to help her out, and it s an easy way to get more involved in the activities of the club. Go to the link to see if one is in your area. FSS breeds can enter in 4-6 month puppy shows. But no points will be earned. Note: FSS breeds must be allowed at puppy matches. She is interested in a long hair, and currently has two Tervurens. She also does rally, herding, tracking and obedience. She is a member of the ABTC, and wrote a column for their newsletter for four years. She has already volunteered to help with our next national specialty. 5 REGISTRATION OF DUTCH BREEDS GUARANTEED ABROAD! Nellie Nugteren, Rotterdam At the Raad van Beheer s Annual General Meeting, December 6, 2014, one of the proposals was to Register all Dutch Breeds born in Great Britain and the United States in the Dutch Studbook. The proposal was accepted by more than 85%. As of this date, it is indeed possible for Dutch breeds to be registered by the Raad van Beheer if the litter is born in a country that does not recognize the breed. Protocol Now that the proposal has been accepted, we have to look into a jointly drawn up protocol, which steps to take. Obviously, stud, dam and offspring have to meet all the Raad van Beheer's requirements, including DNA profiles. This protocol is currently being drafted by a delegation of the Association of Dutch Breeds. When finished it will be submitted to the Raad van Beheer. Once they have accepted the proposal, the registration of our Dutch breeds abroad is guaranteed over the world! 5

6 ABOUT THE AMERICAN DUTCH SHEPHERD ASSOCIATION The ADSA was formed in January of 2010 as a group of seven people with imported FCI registered Dutch Shepherds from Europe when they saw that there was no organization to represent the breed in the USA. In the beginning, the name of the club was Dutch Shepherd Club of North America. The name was changed January 2013 to comply with AKC rules for breed clubs. Several of our members have decades of experience with the breed. One member was instrumental in helping the Long-Hair Dutch Shepherd gain recognition in Ireland, and owns the first Irish registered Dutch Shepherd. In addition, many of our members are also members of the Nederlandse Herdershonden Club, the founding Dutch breed club, to stay abreast of current issues, events, and changes to policy. Our members are the breeders of all but two of the combined long-hair and rough-hair litters born in the United States. Our goals are public education and free exchange of bloodlines between the United States and Europe through AKC recognition. Since it's inception, the ADSA has grown in numbers as more people with purebred Dutch Shepherds found us. And others have joined us after becoming interested in this versatile and beautiful breed. The mission of the ADSA is to protect the original herding temperament and working abilities of the Dutch Shepherd dog, and to promote the awareness and knowledge of the breed as one breed with three distinct varieties: long hair, short hair and rough hair. We acknowledge both the regulations of the Nederlandse Herdershonden Club, and the AKC and it's mission to promote purebred dogs. Additionally, the ADSA is the only breed club in America to adopt the official international FCI breed standard as our standard, as we work towards AKC recognition of the Dutch Shepherd in the United States of America, to maintain a single worldwide breed-type. The ADSA currently has 44 members (37 households), who own 52 AKC FSS registered Dutch Shepherds. 6

7 OUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS A BREED CLUB WHILE IN FSS AND BEYOND This is a reminder of what is required of the club, and how the Dutch Shepherd breed will move to the next level Miscellaneous Class. The list may look daunting, but the club is currently up to date in supplying the AKC with timely information about the club and it s members. There is only one thing the board asks, and that is to go out and promote the breed. If every Dutch Shepherd owner/member went out and participated in one activity per year, that would go a long way towards meeting our requirements. And your dog will enjoy the attention and mental stimulation that is so satisfying for an intelligent herding breed. While in FSS Annually provide the AKC with: List of current officers and board of directors Club membership list with full contact information preferably with a nationwide distribution Encourage competition in Companion Events (Obedience, Rally, Agility, Tracking) and Performance Events (Herding, Coursing Ability Tests). Hold regular club meetings in accordance with club constitution and by-laws and Robert s Rules of Order. Submit minutes. Not via message boards. Provide the AKC with copies of the newsletters and other public columns. Provide the AKC with documentation of club events and report of participants including: Shows, Matches, Judge Education, Seminars, Meet the Breeds, Responsible Dog Ownership Events. Register dogs and litters. Encourage members to join AKC All-Breed Clubs. Keep in Contact with the AKC. How to move to Miscellaneous The breed must be fully recognized by the FCI. Have a minimum of 150 dogs registered in the AKC FSS program. Submit a letter on club letterhead requesting Miscellaneous status. Submit a breed standard that meets AKC requirements that has been voted on and approved by the Club membership. (Send the AKC copies of the ballots.) Continue to compete in Companion Events and Performance Events. Continue to enroll dogs, and litters from those dogs. NEW FACEBOOK PAGE! Molly McGreevy has created a new Facebook page where people can come to learn about the purebred Dutch Shepherd without getting hassled and misinformation from the owners of the mixed breeds. On other Facebook groups we have had comments such as All Dutch Shepherds are mixes., and Rough hairs aren t even Dutch Shepherds, they are terriers. and the not so kind comment, Long hairs are freaks.. This is not an official ADSA Facebook page. Molly and three ADSA members are administrators of the group and we welcome photos of your dogs and littler announcements. So please join in! 7
