There will be a pledge walk starting a 9 a.m., a vaccination and microchip clinic from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., and contests from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. There will also be vendors, food, rescue groups, the critter cruiser and a silent auction. ****** The Rescue Masks are here and bags to hold them have been ordered. These are being donated to fire departments in Pueblo County and in the Arkansas Valley in the memory of Christie Reimer.

PuebloAnimalServices(PAS)startedcontractingwiththeCityandCountyinSeptember2002.The amendedresolutionforpetlicensinginthecountywouldmirrorthelicensingprograminpueblo. WhyshouldPuebloCountyrequirepetlicensing?EventhoughPASwasnotinvolvedin introducingtheoriginalcitylicensingprogram,wearesupportiveofpetlicensingprograms.pet licensingdoesseveralthingsforacommunity: 1. Petlicensinginmanycommunitieshasbeenaroundfor50years.Traditionally,fundsfrom licensinghelpedsupportanimalcontrolprograms.theinternationalcommissionon City/CountyAssociation(ICMA)states Licensingisbasictoanyanimalcontrolprogram. Licensingprogramsareamethodofcollectinginformationonhowmanypetsareina community,whichisimportantforprogramandbudgetplanning;andlicensinggenerates somefundstosupportananimalcontrolprogram. 2. FundingisnotthemajorreasonPASsupportslicensingprograms.Wedon t carewhetherourcontractmoneycomesfromthegeneralfundoraportionfromlicensing. Eitherway,thepublicispayingforananimalcontrolprogram.Licensingplaysanimportant roleinacommunityforseveralotherreasons: A. Licensingsaysyoumustberesponsibleforyourpet.Itisawayof sayingownersmusttakeresponsibilityfortheirindividualpets.thenumberof animalshandledyearly(10,711)andthenumberofcallsforservice(25,166)is tremendousforapopulationof157,000people.itsaysthereisapet overpopulationproblemandpeopleareactingirresponsibly. B. Licensingpromotesrabiesvaccinationsbecauseyoumusthaveproof ofavaccinationtoobtainalicense. C. 9 AKC NEWS AKC voted at the April board meeting to allow mix breeds to compete in stand alone obedience, rally and agility trials. They would not be able to compete in the companion events at an all-breed show or at a specialty. They would compete in classes separate from the purebreds. You can read the complete rules on the AKC website. JUNIOR NEWS Juniors can go to www. bestjunior.com to check out their national rankings for junior showmanship. Obedience, rally, agility and performance event rankings are also included. There is a lot of information on this site. Junior profile: Marian Haddan is 17 years old. She has three dogs; Bruno, Ginger and an elderly Dalmatian named Fancy. Marian is involved in 4-H in both the dog program and the horse program. She had the Grand Champion Novice dog at the State Fair last year. She will be competing in the Open obedience class this year and hopes to be ready to compete in Utility next year. The last time there was a 4-Her competing at the Utility level at the State Fair was 18 years ago. Marian shows Bruno in the obedience and rally classes and Ginger in showmanship. She competes in the western events with her horse and in the future would like to do barrel racing and maybe show jumping. She is planning on entering her first agility trial with Bruno in May. She has done volunteer work at the library and at the animal shelter and likes to ice skate. Marian would like to make a career of dog and horse training. ****** AKC Obedience and Rally Seminar Pat Hill, Flo Andrews and Pat Lester attended the AKC obedience and rally seminar in Colorado Springs in March. It was a power point presentation given by an AKC rep. It was very informative. Some of the things covered were judging, information helpful to trial chairpersons, the new obedience classes, exhibitors with disabilities and handler errors. These are just a small sample of the topics. The AKC companion event reps are challenging judges to bring in 1 new potential judge every two years and 1 new exhibitor each year. They are challenging exhibitors to bring in 1 new Novice A person each year.
