HVGRC NEWS A newsletter for members of the Hudson Valley Golden Retriever Club President s Letter October December 2014 Fall is finally here and it promises to be an active one for our club. If you attended our September meeting at Giselle Graham s home, you were treated to a hands-on evaluation of a litter of seven, nine week old puppies. There was conversation, questions, and differing points of view which made for a very spirited meeting. Evaluating a litter for conformation isn t easy just ask any breeder! In October, we plan to repeat the hands-on evaluation experience at Karen Fennikoh s home. Karen has a litter of puppies that will be seven weeks old on our meeting date of October 15 th. If you were unable to attend the first litter evaluation, please try and make the trip to Karen s. If you were there in September, you know how informative and interesting the evaluation process can be and it is certainly different for every litter. On Saturday November 15 th, we have rebooked our September topic of making delicious and healthy treats for our dogs. The meeting will be held at Giselle s home. Details will follow. Our Holiday Party is shaping up to be a lot of fun. Once again we will meet at the Tolstoy Foundation in Valley Cottage NY for a fun afternoon of games for our dogs and good food for us. The party is scheduled for Saturday, December 13 th at 1 pm. Details will follow. Our All Breed Agility Trial is scheduled for November 7-9 at Victoria Farms in Middletown, NY. Trial Chair Chris Miele is doing a great job of pulling together this major event with the never-ending help of Mike Jones, Phoebe Teramoto, Helen Sherman and Alyson Fuge. But five people are not enough to make this show a success. We need your help (don t we always?!) The volunteer sign up on is up and ready. Please check our website for updates and consider spending a couple of hours watching these dogs and their handlers show off their countless hours of training. Looking forward to January and the expected miserable weather hopefully Sunday, January 25 th will be blessed with sunshine and dry roads to ensure another successful Health Clinic. Giselle Graham is our chair and Ann Marie Cioffi has volunteered to co-chair with Giselle. The flyer with the details and sign-up sheet are available on our website and included in this newsletter. Gayle Watkins attended the Pigmentary Uveitis Talk given by Wendy Townsend at the GRCC National Specialty. Gayle has graciously shared her notes about Wendy s study and should be read by all. You can find her synopsis at the close of the newsletter. Thank you, Gayle, for sharing your notes with us. cont d on pg. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS President s Letter...1,2 Our Stars...3,4 Summis: Calendar of Events...4 Directory Changes...4 In Memoriam...5 Golden Sunset...5 Directory Changes...5 Health Clinic Flyer...6,7 HVGRC Officers...8 Bits & Pieces...9 Special Section: PU Info

The Morris Animal Foundation Golden Retriever Lifetime Study has just enrolled their 2,000 th Golden Retriever! This is a major step in reaching the crucial goal of 3,000 dogs. If you are a breeder, there are puppy packets available to give your puppy buyers. They are terrific very informative and complete with a packet of information specifically for your vet. I distributed them with my most recent litter and the reception was excellent. Everybody wants to see an end to canine cancer. If you have a Golden under two years of age, please consider enrolling in this study. The results may not be known for years, but this could be the beginning of a brighter future for our breed. Details are on our website. On a personal note, many of you may remember the article I wrote for the GR News that was reprinted in our newsletter in July It dealt with the relatively unknown genetic disease Primary Ciliary Dyskenesia, a congenital disorder that doesn t allow the respiratory system to expel inhaled pathogens such as dust, dirt and microbes. These pathogens collect and are trapped in the airways leading to chronic respiratory infections like bronchitis and pneumonia. Life expectancy is days to a few months and possibly a few years. I had two puppies affected in one litter and one puppy in another. The brother and sister, Simon and Shelby, lived to 3! and 4! respectively. They both died from pneumonia they were no longer able to fight. Sadly, we lost Daisy this past July a few weeks after her 5 th birthday. We always thought Daisy would live a long life despite her round the clock pneumonia. We believed her non-stop obsession with retrieving any ball that was thrown would keep the congestion in her lungs moving. Her aerobic capacity was great. Unfortunately, after so many years of non-stop, daily meds her kidneys began to decline. We had to take her off the meds that fought the pneumonia in order to try and stabilize her kidneys. But, in doing so the pneumonia came back with a vengeance and we had to let her go. It was a Simon valiant fight for four, very long weeks. Daisy s death marked the end of six years of wondering every single day if the dogs were going to be healthy or start on another downward slide. It was also a six year effort to understand the disease and seek a cure. We worked with specialists at U Penn and participated in a major study looking for genetic markers. We tried experimental drugs and alternative therapies and worked with vets in several different states and universities. This is the hard part about making the decision to breed dogs and be responsible for what you do. I was told several times to put the dogs down because of the emotional and financial drain. That option was never an option. Simon, Shelby and Daisy may not have lived long lives, but they lived rich, wonderful lives. They traveled with us and especially loved the beach. We never kept them sheltered for fear of what virus they might contract. They were stoic about their thrice daily meds and didn t mind the oxygen tent, the never-ending blood draws or the sub-q fluids. I learned a lot from their bravery and more about what it means to commit yourself to this breed. I hope their lives, and all they endured, will help the vets find the reasons behind this genetic defect. That s what I tell myself when I see their pictures and realize how much I miss them. As always, if you have any ideas for meeting topics, speakers, events, please be in touch. Comments and criticism are welcome too! Bob Shelby 2 Daisy

I i I!! Our Stars!! Bruce and Audrey Coleman continue their success in obedience trials and hunt tests. On Saturday, September 6 th, Fanny completed her UDX title at the Western Lakes Dog Training Club obedience trials. Fanny placed in both Open B and Utility B. The next week she earned a bumper leg at the Patroon Dog Training Club at Poestenkill, NY. She again placed in both classes. On Sunday, September 7 th, Pete (right) earned his Senior Hunter title at the Finger Lakes Retriever Club hunt test in Baldwinsville, NY. Pete completed his title in five straight hunt tests. Pete was just 19 months old at the time. He is now Skylight s Repeat Offender SH. He is a son of the Coleman s Ditto, Trifecta s Repeat Performance, whose many titles would fill a couple of lines. I''' t ti ti I \\/ l r..,.$ \ttr tx ui ".\-;.\\t 'l\' \ ' \\' r\ t'\ if t\, Ir Kathy Eddy trained and handled Can CH Comstock s Gift of the Magi (left) to her TD title at the Syracuse Obedience Training Club test on September 7 th. Here she is with her rosette and a toy, looking very pleased with herself, as she should be. Sue Handelman s Heather (right) became Qualified All-Age by earning 2 nd place in the Qualifying Stake at the Westchester Retriever Club all-breed Field Trial on August 17 th. She ran a beautiful trial, and was one of only 4 dogs to finish out of 22 starters. No JAMS were given. She was also the only Golden to finish. This was especially gratifying because her training has been almost entirely for hunt tests, and she earned her placement with minimal field trial experience. Because Sue is unable to travel South for winter field training, Heather spends her winters preparing for the obedience ring where she earned each of her titles with placements in 3 straight trials. Heather is completely amateur-owner trained and handled, which is becoming a rarity even in hunt tests. The three stars after her name indicate her QAA status: My Stardust Melody CDX RN MH WCX *** 3

Praesent vitae nisl.!! Our Stars cont d!! Helen Sherman is very proud of Scoot, who earned her Senior Hunter title at the Yankee GRC test at West Thompson Dam, Ct. This is Helen s first Senior Hunter titled dog, and Scoot accomplished this in 4 straight tests! She is now Gaylan s Silver Springs Ducks Gotta Fly CDX AX MXJ MXF SH WCX CCA VC. Lisa Smith has two conformation wins to report: Secret, Goodtime s To Tell the Truth, earned two BOB s and a Group 3, all from the month class, ownerhandled of course. Ruby is now Ch. Goodtime s Perfect Ten. She finished quickly from the puppy and month classes. Phyllis Ward is thrilled with Campbell, who won his GCH title on August 20 th. Campbell is nearly ten, and attained this title in limited showing with only one judge overlooking him. On August 23 rd, at the Newtown KC, Campbell went BOB and made the cut in Group. As Phyllis says, age is just a number, and Campbell is making his mother very happy. He is now GCH Awards Follow Your Bliss CGC. 5 In Memoriam David Wohlbach Long-time HVGRC member Dave Wohlbach passed away on August 10, 2014 with family, friends, and his dog at his side. He worked for 34 years as a landscape architect and environmental manager for the NYS DOT. Dave was an avid hunter, conservationist and a volunteer Master Hunter Safety Instructor for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Dave judged many field events, including hunt tests and WC/WCX events put on by HVGRC and Garden State GRC. Active also in the Westchester Retriever Club, he served as President until his final illness. Always friendly and willing to help, he shared his knowledge with many fledgling dog trainers. He was remembered at a peaceful Memorial Service on August 19, on a beautiful summer day, with a view of a lake, amid family and friends. He will be greatly missed. Golden Sunsets Sympathy to Lynn and Jonathan Halpern, who lost Dickens quite suddenly to lymphoma at age 8. He was active in Rally and Obedience until just two weeks before his passing. Bob Swanson s Daisy passed away in July at age 5. Note his tribute to her and to his two other affected puppies in his President s Message. 11 Notes from Pigmentary Uveitis Talk Given by Dr. Wendy Townsend (8/2/14)!! Pigmentary uveitis (PU) is a very special type of uveitis found only in goldens and a few golden crosses!! Just because your golden has uveitis, doesn't mean it is PU. Check for systemic disease, too.! Pigmentary Uveitis!! Found in goldens and golden x lab.!! Has been seen in a goldendoodle!! Only found in North American goldens, not European dogs! Why has PU only been seen recently?!! It has been seen for decades, knowledge just wasn't widely known!! First article published in the Golden Retriever News in 1983!! First listed in the CERF Genetics list first noticed. Before that some ACVOs were drawing pictures of the pigment on the forms. The second copy, the research copy, went to ACVO genetics committee so can be checked but did not go in the database!! Dr. John Sapienza published his article in 2000!! The CERF form didn t have a place for PU until 2001 so there was nowhere to record it previously.!! Since 2001, it started to get recorded so now broader data collection!! Although PU does not pass OFA today, prior to 2001 it was not even recordable so we have little history on the disease. Dogs with PU back then received CERF numbers.! PU diagnosis!! There are no retinal detachments with PU!! Usually only small amounts of pigment on the lens!! The diagnostic criterion is a radial pattern of pigment on the lens!! Can a GP vet diagnose PU? Depends on amount of pigment and skill of GP.!! Best done with a slit lamp which has 10x magnification. Without a slit lamp, it is hard to diagnose.!!"#$!%!! &'()*+#,-!%./0!1")2$!34!5"-6+78!! 11

Notes from Pigmentary Uveitis Talk Given by Dr. Wendy Townsend (8/2/14)! Range of PU diagnoses!! Ranges from mild to severe!! Severe PU can cause blindness and loss of eye(s)!! Cataracts in 30-40% of severe cases!! Glaucoma--used to be 50% but now it is less because we are diagnosing dogs earlier! Signs of PU?!! Early in the disease there are very few, if any, signs!! This is the reason to screen early!! If the dog presents with clinical signs, there is likely damage to the eye and the dog will be more likely to have long-term problems!! Average age when the disease is diagnosable is 8-9 years!! The range of ages when PU was first diagnose is from 1.5 to 15 years!! Therefore, there is NO age at which you can say a dog is not going to get PU!! There is no safe age!!! Most early cases were caught on screening. Later ones caught due to symptoms.! Can I prevent PU in my golden?!! No proven method of prevention!! No proven "best" treatment once it is diagnosed!! Present treatments include:! o Anti-inflammatory meds! o Prednisone! o Dexamethasone! o Flurbiprofen. Seems to be helpful to treat low-grade infections! o Glaucoma medications added as needed! o Dogs with PU are not usually candidates for cataract surgery!! Ocu-Glo --a vision supplement that may have reversed one dog's PU! o New study at Purdue to assess Ocuglo 's efficacy started earlier this year (2014)! o There is low risk to using it! o Includes:!!"#$!%!! &'()*+#,-!./01!2")3$!45!6"-7+89!! 12

Notes from Pigmentary Uveitis Talk Given by Dr. Wendy Townsend (8/2/14)!! Fatty acids have been shown to be helpful!! Antioxidants that can act as anti-inflammatories!! Lutein and Xanthine, which have been shown to help with macular degeneration! o Goldens needed for the study. Will include taking photos of eyes and blood samples. Contact Dr Townsend for more info (see resources at end).! How much PU is out there?! CERF showed 1.5% of goldens had PU in 2012!! But CERF data are limited since most owners do not do exams after 8 years!! Dr. Townsend has found about 5% overall and in dogs 8 and older, the number is 10%!! She has not seen any regional variation so she thinks perceived variations are likely due to vets, breeders, owners awareness!! If you think there is no PU in your area, Dr. Townsend would love to come examine dogs! Iris cysts (ICs) and PU! More ICs in goldens than other breeds!! Boston terriers and Great Danes have a lot but ICs are still seen in only only 1% of them!! While 7% Goldens have ICs!! There does not appear to be any difference between pigmented and clear ICs and progression to PU!! Are there different types of iris cysts?! o Free floating! o Those that hide behind iris!! What has Dr. Townsend seen in terms of ICs?! o 1/3 of goldens she has examined have ICs. Of them:!! 50% have one cyst!! 40% have multiple cysts, most behind are behind iris!! 10% are free floating!! Do ICs mean the dog has an increased risk for PU?!!"#$!%!! &'()*+#,-!./0%!1")2$!34!5"-6+78!! 13

Notes from Pigmentary Uveitis Talk Given by Dr. Wendy Townsend (8/2/14)! o single = 1 cyst in an eye. Dog with 1 cyst in each eye still is a single.! o multiple = more than 1 cyst in an eye.! o All dogs w PU have ICs but not every dog with ICs gets PU! o Single cyst did not increase the risk of PU! o Multiple cysts = yes, appears to be an increased risk for PU!! 58% of the dogs she saw that had multiple cysts developed PU over the next 2-3 years. Her recommendation if your dog has multiple cysts is to have them screened by an ACVO every 6 months!! If your dog has multiple cysts AND has a relative with PU, hold off on breeding that dog but do not start treatment!! Deflating cysts is not good!! Multiple cysts diagnosed first in a 8-10 year old results in a lower risk of developing PU than multiple cysts diagnosed in a younger dog! o Dog with a single cyst is no more likely to develop problems than a dog with no cysts! What is Ultrasound Biomicopsy (UBM) showing?! Uses a special UBM probe that few ACVOs have!! Out of 66 dogs examined at last year's GRCA National, 21% had PU (but 10% were known to have PU so the increase was 11%). Much higher numbers than previously seen.!! U/S found 70% had ICs, far more than the 7% number!! Even with UBM, it is difficult to count number of cysts. Larger cysts are even more difficult! What do Dr. Townsend s eye ultrasounds show that a CERF/OFA exam doesn't?! Ciliary body is not visible on exam, only on u/s so the u/s can provide more info about ICs behind the iris!! UBM ultrasound vs radiologist u/s--can the latter do the same thing?! o No the radiologists u/s can t see the smaller cysts! Things we don't know! Are ICs part of the PU spectrum or are they just coincidental?!!"#$!%!! &'()*+#,-!./01!2")3$!45!6"-7+89!! 14

Notes from Pigmentary Uveitis Talk Given by Dr. Wendy Townsend (8/2/14)! o Genetic pedigrees of PU dogs show PU, multiple ICs, single ICs in the pedigree but that isn't conclusive! o All breeds and mixes dogs 8 years or older tend to have cysts so small cysts may be an aging problems not disease! Where do we stand on the DNA test for PU?!! Dr. Townsend now has 31 control dogs (25 good ones), enough for the DNA test.!! The DNA genome-wide assay study (GWAS) will likely be run by end of this month (Aug).! o GWAS will reduce the DNA searched from 2.5 billion base pairs to 5k base pairs! o That will focus their search area! What is the mode of inheritance, Recessive or dominant?!! Now believe it is dominant w incomplete penetrance! o with Recessive traits--usually lose a function, a protein doesn't get made! o with Dominant traits--extra functions, extra copies of gene! o So, confirming the mode of inheritance with the DNA test may enable us to understand the function of the disease better! Histopathology! It is very helpful for Dr. Townsend to get eyes from deceased dogs over 12 with clear eyes on OFA exam (no ICs, etc.)! o send globes to Dr. Townsend with blood sample to her or CHIC (see resources at end)!! there is no charge and you will get notified of results!! Print out eye donation forms and put them in your dog's file at your vet's!! Discuss this with your vet ahead of time!! Tell your vet to collect eyes like pathology in formalin.!! If your vet charges or shipping, Dr. Townsend has donations to help reimburse you.! What else can you do?! Get your golden's eyes examined by an ACVO every year for its entire life!!"#$!%!! &'()*+#,-!./01!2")3$!45!6"-7+89!! 15

Notes from Pigmentary Uveitis Talk Given by Dr. Wendy Townsend (8/2/14)!! If your dog has ICs, ask your ophthalmologist to draw picture of where the cysts are on the OFA form so your dog s next exam will be more conclusive! Donate your dog's blood to CHIC! Donate your dog's eyes! Host Dr. Townsend to your area for seminar and exams Resources!
