HVGRC NEWS President s Letter A newsletter for members of the Hudson Valley Golden Retriever Club January March 2015 Another year is upon us and another holiday season is past. I sincerely hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and that the outlook for 2015 is bright with purpose and joy. As I write this, three of our invaluable and long-term members - and our friends - are coming thru the holiday season with serious health issues. Helen Sherman, Paula Strazza and Phyllis Ward have had a very difficult time but we hope the onslaught of flowers and get well cards have brightened their days and put them on the mend. We need you ladies happy and healthy! 2014 was a very successful year for our club. Our Super Specialty weekend was an unqualified success as were both Agility Trials. and the annual Health Clinic. The club did very well financially from these labor-intensive events and our membership is to be applauded for their hard work and dedication. We welcomed two new members into the club, Attila Mocsotar and Jan Anderson and look forward to more new faces in promises to be another good year. We are on track with our Health Clinic on January 25th and many thanks go out to Giselle Graham for taking on this responsibility and to Ann Marie Cioffi who is rounding up all the volunteers to make this crazy day a success. Our Super Specialty and Agility Trials are in the planning stages with more details to be announced. We brainstormed meeting ideas at our Holiday Party and hope to kick off the 2015 season with a Fun Field Day in either April or May. Our club is comprised of people and their dogs that are interested in so many different venues and we are striving to meet those needs. We are hoping to have an Agility for Beginners meeting as well as a History of HVGRC. History? Yes, this club does have an amazing history that goes back to some very famous humans and dogs and is fascinating. Other ideas include possible presentations from ICG and Canine Warriors. We are always open to meeting ideas - whether it be topics, speakers etc and look to you for the ideas you would like to [Date] see covered. Attendance at our meetings involves travel and time and we want that to be as informative and fun as possible. Have an idea? Let the Board know. Speaking of the Board, we have an opening for Treasurer due to Alyson Fuge s relocation. A job description has been posted on the HVGRC website if you are interested. Alyson has volunteered to coach the new Treasurer until he/she is up to speed. This position gives you a voice on the Board as well. If you have questions regarding the position, please feel free to contact myself or Alyson. Enjoy your dogs, the cold winter weather. I look forward to seeing you at our meeting this Spring. 3 !! Our Stars!! Our wonderful Goldens are nothing if not versatile! Read on Bruce and Audrey Coleman travelled to the GRCA National Specialty in Bristol, Tennessee and Ashville, North Carolina and sent this report: We traveled down on Thursday and Friday. Saturday and Sunday were the field events in Bristol. Fanny passed the Senior Hunter test, and then Fanny, Kate and Rocket (at 13 years of age) all passed the Working Certificate test. Monday was a travel and setup day for Obedience. Tuesday and Wednesday was the largest Obedience Trial in AKC history. There were 321 dogs entered in obedience with a total of 520 entries. There were 204 dogs entered in Rally with a total of 248 entries. It took two days to complete this one trial. Tuesday was primarily for the non-regular classes. Vinny qualified in Veteran s Novice Obedience and we fielded a team for the team competition. There were 11 teams entered, mostly dressed in matching clothing/costumes. A team consists of four people and their dogs. We were the Damn Yankees. All four of us, Bruce with Vinny, Audrey with Fanny, and Diane Blackman and Kathy Wager with their dogs gave a spirited performance. When the judge asked if we were ready we responded in unison Batter Up. This is the Praesent vitae nisl. YouTube film of our performance Wednesday was the obedience day for the regular obedience classes. Fanny qualified in Open. Thursday was Vinny s opportunity to compete in conformation. He won the *** (Qualified All Age) Field Trial Sweeps! Friday and Saturday we traveled home. Sunday (all day!) was laundry day. A bitch that Karen Fennikoh bred AND co-owns won the Bred-By- Exhibitor class at the National Specialty! Here is the gorgeous photo of Amberglo s Defying Gravity at Maplecroft, AKA Emily, owned by Karen and Bonnie Rubin, and handled by Karen. Their names will be on the GRCA s John Roger Magoffin perpetual trophy, which has been in existence in the GRCA since 1938!!! Talk about being a part of history! 4 !! Our Stars cont d!! After In earning hac Qualified habitasse All-Age status platea in August, Sue dictumst. Handelman s Heather earned 3 more Master qualifications in September, at Long Island RFTC, Maryland RC and the Labrador RC of Greater Boston. Also at the National, Chris Miele s Flirt took fourth place in 9-12 Puppy Bitches. By early November, Helen Sherman s Scoot earned her 5 th Senior Hunter leg. In Obedience she won a run-off to earn a third place in versatility, and went onto qualify in Open B. In Agility she qualified in Time 2 Beat, and ran really well in all her classes. The October issue of the Newsletter reported that Lisa Smith s young girl Secret, Goodtime s To Tell the Truth, earned two BOB s and a Group 3, all from the month class, owner-handled. At that time Lisa ed a photo of Secret. Unfortunately it never reached me, and is still floating around somewhere in cyber-space. I asked Lisa to re-send it for this issue, and here is Secret, looking beautiful as expected. Secret Goodtime s To Tell the Truth Kindle, who is officially known as Gaylans Hearts Afire, has some new agility titles: AX (Excellent Standard), AXJ (Excellent Jumpers with Weaves) and OF (Open Fast), reported by her owner-handler, Phoebe Teramoto. Kindle also earned a leg in Masters JWW. During the fall, she earned her WC title and a JH leg. After all their Agility placements, Kindle and Bette found time to visit Santa.

!! Our Stars cont d!! Phyllis Ward s Campbell received an award of merit at the National Specialty. Also at the National, her Bubbles made the final cut in American Bred bitches. Then, just a few weeks after winning an Award of Merit at the GRCA National, Campbell completed his Novice JWW Agility Title at the Springfield shows, handled by Mary Elizabeth Simpson. He got all three legs with placements and earned two Novice Standard legs as well. Congratulations to Phyllis and this very talented boy who is nearly 10 years young! 6 Club Activities cont d Specialty Raffle Hi everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and it was everything you were wishing for. Now that they re over and we re into the winter doldrums, it s a good time to start thinking about the HVGRC 2015 Specialty Show in June. I m hoping to enlist the support of each member in making this year s raffle as successful as last year...maybe even better. We can do it!! A small contribution from every member will make it happen. I want to thank Chris Miele and Giselle Graham for already giving me some great items at the November meeting a beautiful signed golden retriever ornament, a gorgeous basket, leashes & collars, canine coasters, a canvas golden retriever tote bag, toys, clickers for training, food bowls and treat bags. Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!! Joe and I recently attended two fund raisers given by friends one for a pre-school and one for a cancer support group. Some of the raffle items were simply amazing. I asked my friends where they got the donations and they both said, friends asking friends. There are so many willing people who would donate to our raffle all you have to do is ask! Perhaps you got a gift over the holidays that you re not wild about and you are planning to return it. Consider our raffle there s probably someone who d love that gift you hate. And remember, the items don t have to be dog related. Big hits last year were the Keurig, the Seiko watches and the photo shoot. After the holidays retail sales are phenomenal. Be on the lookout for marked-down items that could be raffled separately or grouped together in a basket. Baskets based on a theme are a big draw - people love them. I have the baskets all you have to do is give me the items to fill them. Pick a theme, ask a few friends to supply an item each and we ve got a basket! Last year Joe and I thought of the theme Fun in the Sun. We got a straw basket and filled it with flip flops, sunglasses, a beach towel, a chair umbrella, a couple of summer books, a straw hat, and a water bottle. It was all about $30 from a discount store and it sold lots of raffle tickets!!!! More examples are sports related items, gifts for kids, jewelry, chain store gift cards, lessons of any kind (horseback riding, golf, dancing, etc.), books, wine, chocolate & cookies, candles, picture frames, household items and of course, any pet products. The possibilities are endless. Use your imagination. Think of all the people you know, groups you belong to, and places you frequent. Many of them will be happy to contribute something if you just ask!! Be sure to tell people that we are a non-profit organization who makes monetary contributions towards rescue, research and education. Much of the research has helped canines of all breeds and even humans as well. Thank you for reading. Wishing all of you a very Happy & Healthy New Year 2015!! 11 The Genetics of Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS) in Golden Retrievers Presented by Dr Josh Stern, DVM, PhD, ACVIM, UC Davis at the 2014 Golden Retriever National Specialty Personal notes taken by Dr Gayle Watkins Table of Contents What is of Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS)?... 1 How is SAS Diagnosed?... 2 What Are the Flow Rate Cut Off Values for GRs?... 2 Are There Treatments For SAS?... 3 SAS Research in Goldens... 3 Genetics of Golden Retriever SAS... 4 Age for Reliable Screening... 5 Where Are We On a GR DNATest?... 5 If You Have A Dog with SAS... 5 When the DNA Test Becomes Available... 6 Update since this talk was given at the National by Gayle Watkins... 6 More Info on Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis... 7 What is of Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS)? SAS is the 2 nd most common cardiac disease in dogs. It is characterized by aortic subvalvular blood flow restriction Mild SAS does not affect lifespan or activity Severe SAS lifespan averages 19 months SAS disease characteristics Left ventricular concentric hypertrophy Subvalvular lesion can look subtle but causes heart to overwork, causing ischemic infarction and arrhythmia Page 1 Copyright 2014 Gayle L Watkins 11

The Genetics of SAS in Golden Retrievers, 2014 Golden Retriever National Specialty Health Seminar Post stenotic dilation Aortic insufficiency How is SAS Diagnosed? Gold standard diagnosis (dx) post mortem necropsy of subvalvular aorta Ante mortem (before death) o old way was angiogram, now echocardiograms are used o But dog must be calm during echo o Extreme duress will not result in a valid echo. It can change a normal to an equivocal. o If your dog has an equivocal rating at a clinic, go to a cardiologist to confirm the dx. Auscultation alone isn t good enough to dx SAS o Almost all breeding age golden retrievers (GRs) will develop soft murmur with excitement o Doppler echo is the only way to determine if a dog is truly abnormal You cannot overestimate aortic velocity since higher numbers are more accurate than lower o An abnormal result in a calm dog should be taken seriously o Clear by auscultation ( alone doesn t mean much to Dr Stern. (Note from Gayle: But then Dr Stern went on to say that we do not need to echo all breeding stock. How they do we clear them?) o For more info on echocardiograms in dogs, see What Are the Flow Rate Cut Off Values for GRs? Flow rates or velocities are measured during a Doppler echo in meters per second or m/sec. The categorization of these rates has changed over the past few years. There is still not consensus among cardiologists. The rates in the right hand column are what Dr Stern thinks are appropriate. Page 2 Copyright 2014 Gayle L Watkins 12

The Genetics of SAS in Golden Retrievers, 2014 Golden Retriever National Specialty Health Seminar ARCH Past Today Normal 1.9 m/sec 2.0 m/sec Abnormal 2.4 m/sec 2.4 m/sec Equivocal 2.0 to 2.4 m/sec 2.1 to 2.4 m/sec Are There Treatments For SAS? With treatments, severely affected dogs can live to 4.5 years But no interventional therapy changes clinical outcome Medical management may delay onset of severe disease Clinical outcomes o Syncope (transient loss of consciousness) o Sudden death o Congestive heart failure SAS Research in Goldens In 1976, research determined Newfoundlands SAS was autosomal dominant with incomplete penetrance. It is also familial in GRs and Rottweilers, thus affected dogs produce more affected dogs than unaffected dogs do. SAS is found in low frequencies in breeds other than Newfs, GRs and Rotties. SAS is rare in people so we can t use human research Stern Study (see abstract at end of notes) 73 GRs with 3 generation pedigrees o All had full ACVIM Doppler o Affected 2.50 m/sec o Normal 1.8 m/sec o Equivocal between those values Page 3 Copyright 2014 Gayle L Watkins 13

The Genetics of SAS in Golden Retrievers, 2014 Golden Retriever National Specialty Health Seminar Of the 32 Affected GRs (10 M, 22 F) o 37.5% had left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH; thickened ventricle) o 67% subvalvular ridge o 67% leaking aortic valve For every 1 m/sec above 2.5 m/sec o 2.95 x more likely to have subvalvular ridge o 4.65 x more likely to have LVH o 2.54x more likely to have leaking aortic valve So if you have a dog with an equivocal, look for these other issues (ridge, LVH, leaking valve) to try to determine if the dog is actually normal or affected Genetics of Golden Retriever SAS In goldens, the inheritance pattern is not simple. It is most likely: Polygenic Autosomal dominant with incomplete penetrance When we eventually get a genetic test if it supports an autosomal dominant with incomplete penetrance mode of inheritance, do NOT test and remove animals from gene pool!!! If the gene is rampant in the breed, breeders must strategically: remove dogs breed Do NOT breed SAS affected dogs But do not throw out the dogs with the gene that do not express the disease! For them, use outcrossed breedings. He is not optimistic that Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) will be useful because we will need velocities for all dogs in the pedigree Page 4 Copyright 2014 Gayle L Watkins 14

The Genetics of SAS in Golden Retrievers, 2014 Golden Retriever National Specialty Health Seminar Age for Reliable Screening Can screen with echo in young dogs Puppy murmurs should be gone by 4 months If there is a loud murmur after 4 month rabies shot, consider SAS New echo test uses different calculations (see values above) The exercise test for GRs is USELESS Where Are We On a GR DNATest? There is NO DNA test appropriate for golden retrievers though researchers are working on one. They have identified the gene mutation in Newfies and are manipulating the gene ( BUT DO NOT USE THE NEWFIE TEST FOR GRs!!! The Newfoundland gene is NOT associated with SAS in GRs. In goldens, they are looking at Chromosome 21. If You Have A Dog with SAS You can help by submitting a blood sample: Whole blood in purple topped tube 3 generation pedigree Report from a cardiologist s echo examination If severely affected, consider a necropsy donation to research Veterinary Genetics Lab, NC State s Veterinary Health Complex ( research/) or UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Lab ( Page 5 Copyright 2014 Gayle L Watkins 15

The Genetics of SAS in Golden Retrievers, 2014 Golden Retriever National Specialty Health Seminar When the DNA Test Becomes Available Consider using the researchers lab for testing so: The researched can gain access to samples Many university labs donate back to lab Commercial labs do not share samples so there is no research benefit Update since this talk was given at the National by Gayle Watkins Since Dr Stern s talk at the 2014 Golden Retriever National Specialty, at least one DNA testing lab, Paw Print Genetics has discontinued offering the PICALM test. This decision was based on new findings from Michaela Drogemuller which dispute the results of Dr Stern s research. Dr Stern is aware and supportive of this decision, based on his comments on Facebook. The PICALM gene is not suspected to be the cause of golden retriever SAS so this new evidence does not affect golden retriever breeders and owners. However, the debate between these two teams is a good reminder to us to scrutinize DNA tests and the research they are based on before they are used widely to remove dogs from the gene pool. Drögemüller M, Jagannathan V et al A single codon insertion in the PICALM gene is not associated with subvalvular aortic stenosis in Newfoundland dogs. Human Genetics. Nov 13. Journal of Small Animal Practice. Apr 53(4): Dr Josh Stern jstern@ucdavis.edu Abstract OBJECTIVES: To describe the echocardiographic findings and pedigree analysis of golden retrievers with subvalvular aortic stenosis. METHODS: Seventy three golden retrievers were evaluated by auscultation and echocardiography. A subcostal continuous wave Doppler aortic velocity >2.5 m/s and presence of a left basilar systolic ejection murmur were required for diagnosis of subvalvular aortic stenosis. Three echocardiographic characteristics were recorded: evidence of aortic insufficiency, subvalvular ridge or left ventricular hypertrophy. A disease status score was calculated by totalling the number of echocardiographic characteristics per subject. RESULTS: Thirty two of 73 dogs were affected and their aortic velocities were as follows: range 2.5 to 6.8 m/s, median 3.4 m/s and standard deviation 1.2 m/s. Echocardiographic characteristics of 32 affected dogs were distributed Page 7 Copyright 2014 Gayle L Watkins 17

The Genetics of SAS in Golden Retrievers, 2014 Golden Retriever National Specialty Health Seminar as follows: left ventricular hypertrophy 12 of 32, aortic insufficiency 20 of 32 and subvalvular ridge 20 of 32. Disease status score ranged from 0 to 3 with a median of 2. There was a statistically significant correlation between aortic velocity and disease status score (r=0.644, P<0.0001). Subvalvular aortic stenosis was observed in multiple generations of several families and appears familial. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Subvalvular aortic stenosis in the golden retriever is familial. Severity of stenosis correlates well with cumulative presence of echocardiographic characteristics (left ventricular hypertrophy, subvalvular ridge and aortic insufficiency).
