1 HVGRC NEWS A newsletter for members of the Hudson Valley Golden Retriever Club President s Letter July September 2018 I would like to sincerely thank the membership for their vote of confidence in my election to another two-year term as your President. I ve been a member of this club for many years and continue to enjoy our meetings, events and spending time with members. The biggest challenge to my role is encouraging membership participation in our various events and meetings. I joined HVGRC to learn more about this breed, the various venues open to me as an owner and to spend time with other Golden Retriever people. I have definitely learned a lot and continue to do so with each meeting and event we sponsor. Congratulations are in order for the re-election of Carol Russo for another two years as Recording Secretary and to Ann Marie Cioffi and Lynn Halpern for retaining their seats on the Board for another two year term. Our Board is a hard working group that enjoys getting together and to ensuring our club runs efficiently with benefits to all. Speaking of benefits, our second Health Clinic will be held on Sunday, October 21 at the Mt. Pleasant Hospital for Animals. We are lining up the doctors and will publish the details shortly. I believe two health clinics a year will not only benefit our members and their dogs, but will provide important income for the club. In what is becoming an annual event, our Dock Diving meeting is scheduled for July 28th in Millerton, NY. Meeting notices were ed in late June. We are hoping to hold a Trick Dog training seminar in September/October. This newest AKC title has become very popular with enthusiasts and several club members already have the Trick Dog Excellent title attached to their dog s names. I wonder what s next?! Although we aren t a large club by other club standards, we have a solid membership base that is widely dispersed over the enormous Hudson Valley. I know it is difficult for all of us to come together for meetings and events, but that doesn t have to stop us from getting to know one another. I ve asked a few members of the club to write a short bio about themselves and their dogs. I hope to make the Meet the Members segment of our newsletter a must-read! Don t be shy when I ask you to tell us all about yourself! Do you have an idea for a meeting? Is there something you would like to see addressed by the Board? Do you have some exciting news you would like to share? Please don t ever hesitate to reach out to the any member of the Board. It s your club and we re here for you. 2 HVGRC CALENDAR OF COMING EVENTS Saturday July 28 Thursday September 6 Sunday October 21 TBA September/October Dock Diving Millerton, NY CCA in conjunction with Garden State GRC at Eastern Regional All Breed Health Clinic Mount Pleasant Hospital for Animals in Newtown CT. Trick Dog Seminar!! Our Stars!! Karen Fennikoh is proud to announce her 49th home-bred champion (WOW!) Her Moose finished his championship on April 1st. His real name is Ch. Amberglo s Into The Wild. Carol Russo and Beckett (MBVIS CH Picabo's You Are My Sunshine CCA CGCA THDX BN TKI MBVISS) have had a very busy 2018 so far. Beckett has continued to shine in the breed ring with Diana Mason, garnering 3 more JAMs for a total of 7 from the Veteran class. Carol and Beckett jumped on the 2018 Specialty carousel and it definitely took them for a ride! In February, at the Long Island GRC Specialty, he was honored by venerable breeder judge, Barbara Pepper with his 5th JAM in a beautiful line up of specials. Carol took his lead in Sweeps and he was recognized by Megan Buel Strickland with a Best Veteran in Sweeps placement as well. Beckett's success continued at the two Chesapeake GRC Specialties, taking both BVIS awards (and some great embroidered towels!) from breeder judges Michael Faulkner and Patrice Loves. cont d p.3 2

3 Beckett cont d On they went to the Pine Barrens GRC Specialty where respected breeder judge Cindy Partridge gave him JAM #6 and BVIS. So exciting! Traveling, this time to New England and the Connecticut River Valley GRC Specialty, Beckett was again recognized by breeder judges: Best Veteran in Sweeps by Carol Manthorne and BVIS by Collette Jaynes. The Hudson Valley GRC Super Specialty was next and Beckett enjoyed seeing all of you. Peggy Beisel- McIlwaine selected him for BVIS honors in the AM show and it was truly wonderful to see his 7th JAM awarded in the PM show by Linda Hurlebaus. Lured by the bagpipes, Carol and Beckett trekked to the Yankee GRC Specialty the next weekend. We thought things couldn't get better until judge Linda C. More pulled Beckett out for Best of Opposite in Specialty. It was one of those unforgettable moments that dog shows sometimes provide. Carol took home one of Alison Desmarais' gorgeous stained glass prizes to remind her of that special day. Beckett's name will now appear on two Yankee GRC Specialty trophies. The carousel ride has finally slowed down to let the happy duo off for the summer. Carol reports that sharing time at the shows with Golden friends new and old has been a great experience. Beckett has amassed quite a fan club and brings a smile to judges and exhibitors alike. What a ride! From Joe Chvastek: Spryte (Sunfire's Spryte of the Highlands) is 2!!! (Looks like a very special hamburger birthday cake!) Joe C & The Sterling Forest Pack Sundance, Spryte, & Timber 3

5 Specialty Report: Raffle From our Raffle Queen Lorraine Cusimano Bob summed up our Specialty Show quite nicely. It was a fun day for all and congratulations for all those who went home with trophies, ribbons and prizes. It s always great fun to watch these wonderful dogs go through their paces. As Bob mentioned, our 2018 raffle was quite a success. Last year our receipts totaled $1600 and I am very happy to say that this year we reached a total of $2645. The success of the raffle and the congratulations go to all the generous contributors who made it happen. There is no raffle without all the goodies that go into the baskets, displays and prizes. Once again, I am very grateful and appreciative and I can t say thank you enough. Also, as you know, it takes a great deal of work to pull off a raffle of this size and I want to thank the many helpers I was blessed to have, starting with Wednesday night. My husband Joe, Bob Swanson and I drove our three SUV s to the Grange on Wednesday night to set up the tables and bring as many of the baskets as we could fit in the cars. The rest were brought to the site on Thursday morning. Thank you Bob for helping with the setup. Needless to say, Joe is involved with many aspects of the raffle throughout the year but he is there during the Specialty for whatever is needed and need him we do. He builds stands to hold up baskets and displays, secures things that blow over, puts up and takes down the HVGRC banner, takes care of the generator (and our two dogs), and is basically our handyman. Thanks Joe! I always had help from so many caring members at some point during the two days Bob Swanson, Chad Carr, Karen Frustaci, Patty McCoy-Coleman, Giselle Graham, Lynn Paraskeva, Lynn Halpern, Laurie Cafaro, and Mike Jones. They were all amazingly generous in their offers to help in any way they were needed. Thank you so much!! Of course when the Specialty is over everyone is tired and wants to go home but Bob Swanson, Chad Carr and Karen Frustaci stayed and helped me and Joe clean up the tent and load the supplies into the cars. It made the work easier and the time go by faster. Thanks so much guys! Just a reminder that I collect for the raffle all year long. It s never too early or too late to make a donation. The sooner I have the goodies the easier it is for me to do the work. 12 Meet the Members! Kathryn Eddy VMD My first golden was Copper Kettle s Shasta Swish UD and he was acquired in 1974 before I went to veterinary school. I was working for a veterinarian on Long Island where my family lived and where I was taking some classes at SUNY Stony Brook. My parents moved to Colebrook, Connecticut around that time. On the way to Torrington I would go by a small pet store in someone s garage and stopped in. Guess who lived there?...lloyd Case of Celloyd golden retrievers, one of the very early golden breeders and exhibitors. He helped me find an obedience class to bring Shasta for lessons. Unfortunately Shasta had juvenile cataracts so I bought Gandalf s Comstock Euphoria CDX, WCX (a Dual CH Quar daughter) in 1977 and bred her to Bainin of Caernac to produce Can CH Comstock s Caramel Nut UDTX, SH, WCX, VCX; Can UD, WCX. He had Am points including a Group win from the classes handled by me. You will never see someone more surprised than when that judge pointed at me for the win! I graduated from veterinary school in 1979, the same year Jazz was born. I spent my first year out of vet school working at an internship in New Haven. My mother whelped my first litter of 12 without any experience with pups. She did have 6 kids and had some courses in nursing so that counts, right? It all went well luckily. Jazz was bred to Sunfire s Breila of Bristol CD JH WCX ** and I co owned the pick bitch with Barb and Mike of Sunfire. She became AmCan CH Comstock Sunfire O Hillcrest UDT, MH, WCX;Can. CDX, WC, Ritz. I had more time and energy back then I guess. (editor s note: Ritz is the first photo, on the page opposite the title page, in the1996 edition of The New Golden Retriever by Marcia Schlehr.) From Ritz came the dogs I have now. I haven t bred that many litters but have always tried to breed good-looking Goldens with a good work ethic. I m especially proud of WCC Sandy and WCC Jessi who are part of the Warrior Canine Connection program. I recently lost Darwin (AmCan CH Comstock Intelligent Design TD, WC, VC OS) to a lung tumor but he sired a litter of 11 for ICAD (Indiana Canine Assistant Network) that is now about 10 weeks old. I m glad that he lives on in his kids. 12

13 Patricia McCoy Colemen Feels like only yesterday my Dad, Bill McCoy, got us started in Golden Retrievers. Our first Golden was Rusty, Summers Golden Dream, Am.Can. CD, Am. CDX who we bred by our own, Laurie Cafaro in Then came our Hobby, my Dad, my sister, Laura McCoy, and I traveled showing dogs. Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio on a weekend were not unusual. Laura competed in Juniors, and I competed in breed (Dad helping when needed). First Big Win was with John & Lynn Lounsbury's (2 of HVGC's founding members) Ch. Sir Duncan of Woodbury. WD at GRCA National in California Best in Show 5/2/1982 (with WD from National) In 1990, married the Greatest Man on Earth, Jack Coleman. Still showing, not as much. Grooming your Golden Video by Delaware Valley Golden Rescue was an opportunity to remember, Ch. McCoy's Heaven Can Wait Enjoyed winning Top 20, with my Am. Can. Ch. Stoneleath Royal Commander, Theo. Theo was a GRCA Hall of Fame Member. His greatest accomplishment was with the elementary school children that he was able to teach not to be afraid of dogs and how to be responsible dog owners. Theo opened the door for Chandler and then Raymond to go into the BOCES School - now teaching older children how important Laws regarding dogs need to be fair...and how many directions Laws for dogs can take the students. Now after all these years and fond memories, I am back in the Obedience Ring with Tangleloft McCoy's Star Witness, BN. So many new classes to have fun in. Working towards CD, hoping to have Ted E. Bear's CGC and Trick Title by the end of the year. Any members who don't know me yet, please come and introduce yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions. Note: My day job is an Animal Control Officer that has benefited because of the Education shared among Golden Retrievers Enthusiasts TANGLELOFT MCCOY'S STAR WITNESS got 3rd place at both the am and pm Taconic Hills Kennel Club Show, June 8th, completed BN Title on June 10th, Taconic Hills Kennel Club am show with a 1st place 13
