More importantly, they are what makes the Club work. When you join IDTC, you are considered an active member for the first year. After that, active membership is maintained by putting in a minimum of 10 hours per year doing things for the Club, such as assisting or instructing a class, helping out at events (e. g. being a steward at trials, providing refreshments for a graduation, making arrangements to bring in a seminar speaker, etc.), or serving on a committee such as the Training Committee. Active members are also expected to regularly attend the monthly Club meetings. Your active/inactive status for a year is determined by your participation during the previous year. Page 2

3 General Meeting Minutes IDTC General meeting Minutes April 21, 2015 Submitted by: Hannah Robinson, Secretary The meeting began at 7:07 in the kitchen at Baker Lab, due to the small number of attendees. Secretary s Report: the minutes from the March meeting were approved as read. Please note the members in new positions, inexcusably missed by the Secretary last month Donna Hopple is the new Training Committee member, with Joe Osmeloski serving another year, and Marian Szebenyi another two years. Jami Landry is the new Board Member. Congratulations to all! (and my apologies ) Treasurer s Report: Total of all accounts including Checking, Savings and C.D.s is $51, as of today s date. Funds IN were $3,569, (mostly Beginner Obedience Class registrations), and funds OUT were $ , mostly the pavilion rent for the first quarter of Training Committee: Tammy Snyder reported that the present session is well underway. She thanked all the volunteers who have stepped up this semester to teach or assist. There will be no summer classes, and fall classes are up in the air, since Cornell is planning to replace the roof of the pavilion sometime in the next year. They have offered us an alternative site (yet to be named), but the problem of moving equipment around might make any alternative site impractical. Barn Hunt Class: After putting out an to the membership to test for interest, Tammy got twelve responses from dog owners with no previous experience for a class in Barn Hunt Instinct. Dr. Nancy Almann has offered to teach the class, in two separate sessions of three classes to give more people an opportunity to try the new dog sport. It will be taught at Nancy s house on Agard Road, a mile above the Cayuga Nature Center (NYS Rt. 89). She has the barn hunt set up including hay bales and rats saving the Club the cost of obtaining bales and renting the pavilion. The class would be $30 per working team, (only six teams per class) and those with two dogs would have to be wait listed until all single dog team spots were filled. Dates for the first session would be May 27th, and June 6th and 10th, for the second session, June 17th and 24th, and July 2nd all on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm. The sign up period will be only two weeks (probably May 1-15th). Potential participants are REQUIRED to read the Barn Hunt rules BEFORE signing up, to make sure they can abide by the organization s rules. ( If there is sufficient interest, another three class session may be added. Although Nancy would not encourage spectators as she will be too busy to answer questions during the classes, there are various Barn Hunt tests in the area, especially in Central Square NY, (North of Syracuse on I-81) for those who want to get a first-hand look at the sport. Barn Hunt titles are recognized by both AKC and UKC. Unfinished Business: The revised membership forms and application have gone to board members for final review. CPE Trial Committee: Kathy Hildreth offered to speak for Mallorie, who is still at the Poodle Specialty competing. The premium is now on the web there are 5 classes per day, with discounts for those entering all classes each day, a weekend discount, and a discount for handlers competing with multiple dogs. The judge will be Mike Willis from Missouri. Entries open May 1st and entry closing date is June 2nd. Kathy also spoke about the broken weave bases that must be repaired or replaced before the Trial. The Board has discussed the problem, and a decision will be made within the week so that the equipment will be available for the June trial. Numerous brags were announced in several venues - details can be found elsewhere in the Newsletter. The meeting adjourned at 7:32 pm. Page 3

6 Talk on Acupuncture Tracey Stevens, DVM, CVA Ithaca Dog Training Club Meeting 3/25/15 Acupuncture has been used in eastern countries for 8000 years, though veterinarians began using it about 2000 years ago. Interest in this alternative medical practice grew in the U.S. largely after Nixon s visit to China in Tracey compared the practices of Eastern and Western medicine by saying that Western medicine is a linear, direct approach which very often works more quickly (but with side effects), while Eastern medicine is circular, and seeks balance of the five elements, wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Acupuncture promotes healing by restoring the free flow of energy along the meridians. These meridians or lines where needles are used follow a pattern over the outside of the body, but can effect internal organs. The results are usually slower with acupuncture, showing only after five or six treatments, but rarely show side effects often seen in the pharmaceuticals used in Western medicine. Unlike Western practices, the acupuncture need not be done on a strict schedule or frequency, often being spread out with weeks between treatments. Some of the conditions in dogs which respond well to acupuncture include joint problems, IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), arthritis, wobbler s and muscle pain and weakness. Tracey spoke of a Rottweiler she treated who had become immobile. After days of acupuncture he willingly got up and brought his owner toys. His diagnosis according to Eastern medicine was kidney/spleen pattern. Seizures treated with acupuncture and Chinese herbs as well as Western medicines can be helpful especially in reducing the amount of damaging anti-convulsive medications used in the West. Kidney failure and liver disease can be helped with both acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Gastro-intestinal issues like unexplained anorexia, weight loss, vomiting, and diarrhea often can be lessened, and the animal (cats and dogs in Tracey s experience) showed gradual improvement when treated weekly. Other maladies that showed improvement with acupuncture included respiratory problems, wound healing, food allergies and asthma, using food therapy and Chinese herbs. Acupuncture provided support for animals going through cancer/chemo treatments and immune problems. Acupuncture did not appear to help in endocrine based disease, including Cushings, diabetes or hypo-thyroid cases. Contra-indications (when NOT to use acupuncture) include the patient having a pacemaker, tumors or open wounds, being pregnant, or in a very weakened state. The risks include ingesting a needle, infection at the needle site, and too much acupuncture treatment, which can result in increased debility and/or death. In conclusion, Tracey recommended the use of acupuncture usually in conjunction with western medicine, particularly in cases of lost mobility and arthritis, where western medicines are not helping enough, and in cases, like seizure disorders, where lower doses of pharmaceuticals would result in fewer side effects. Tracey Steven s practice is Integrated Veterinary Services located at the Animal Performance and Therapy Center in Genoa, New York, (315) She welcomes inquiries about acupuncture treatments. Page 6

7 IDTC BRAGS Anne Williams Terv Falcon was the APDA Dog of the Year. The award was presented at the Invitational Pull in April. Susan Morse Mal Holly, at the Herding Group Association in NJ, went Select for 1 point. The next day at the New Brunswick KC Inc. she went Select for 2 points. On the Saturday show under Linda Robey also sponsored by the New Brunswick KC Inc., she went best of opposite with a win over a special for 3 point major. This brings her up to 17 points, 2 majors, more than 4 judges and beating specials more than 4 times towards her Grand Championship. She was handled by her breeder Carol Sheilds. Mal Cane participated in the First Invitational APDA weight pull. He didn t get quite to needed weight for his title but did well pulling 17x his body weight. Susan and Cane received the Most improved dog and handler team for 2014 of the Inaugural Season. The next day Cane participated in the Rally ASCA trail in Binghamton and received four 2nd placements. These were from Masters and Excellent level. Cane is the pup that is the oldest so needs to work on finishing up titles. There were four ASCA shows in Syracuse NY. Cane completed his RMEX which is Rally Master Excellent title with an X which means five double queues (Master/Excellent) with scores of 195 or greater at the same trial. He also added 22 points in Masters and 27 points in Excellent towards his Rally Championship (points are added with scores of 191 or better, meaning this score would get 1 point). All 8 scores ranged from 193 to 199 and he received two High Combine special awards. He now has 55 points in Masters and 77 in Excellent. To get this championship 100 points is needed in each plus the five double queues over 195 each. At 10 ½ and limited showing we are going for it when we can. Chris O Brien Aussie Fleck had a perfect weekend at the PEN-NY ASC trials in Endicott. She entered her very first Obedience trial and earned two Beginner Novice legs under our very own Judge Lisa Mitchell. And she had her debut off-lead in Rally Advanced again, earning two legs. All four legs were 1st places! Blue looks good on Fleck! Aussie Jazz got 2nd in Wildcard Open. Fleck also had a great agility weekend with PEN-NY ASC at Max 200. She earned her first ASCA Agility title Jumpers Novice with a 1st place and a 2nd place bumper leg. And she earned 2nd place in Gamblers Novice. Jazz earned a 2nd in Elite Jumpers. Diane Krause A quick explanation: To earn a AKC Pointing Breed Senior Hunter Title you must earn 4 legs and to earn a Master Hunter Title you must earn 5 legs. In the pointing breeds you run/hunt with a brace mate at every level. This brace mate is chosen by a random draw and could be any pointing breed that has entered. You performance depends on how well your brace mate is trained & their performance also depends on how well your dog preforms. They are running together for a minimum of 30 minutes. Every time one dog goes on point the other dog has to honor or back the point. That means they come to a stop & at the senior level the dogs collar can be held while the bird is flushed for the pointing dog, shot & retrieved to hand without the person making any forward motion. In masters the dog must stop & stand on its own through the entire sequence without being held. Senior dogs can move on the shot - master dogs can not move until the bird hits the ground and the owner releases them. This has to be done during the entire trial every time a bird is encountered. With that being said - Kendyl Krause earned her first Master Leg this weekend (handled by myself), brother Sonny earned his second Senior Leg (handled by myself) & brother Cruise earned his third Master Leg (he is owned & trained by Odette Fetzner - I bred him so I added him in!) 8 Canine Flu Update Deb Eldredge Utica Pet Health Examiner, April 13, 2015 Reprinted with permission On April 12, Cornell University issued an update on the canine flu outbreak in the Chicago area and other areas of the Midwest. The virus involved was originally thought to be the H3N8 virus. Testing at Cornell University and the University of Wisconsin have now identified the virus as H3N2. Both young and adult dogs are vulnerable to the new influenza virus This newly identified virus is very close to the influenza strain seen in southern China and South Korea in dog populations since It does not appear to be transmissible to humans but a form of this virus has caused respiratory illness in cats. Routine serology (blood work) will not detect this virus as it is different from the H3N8 form. Work is currently underway to develop serology tests. There is currently no sign of an influenza outbreak among cats. At this time, it is not known if the current canine influenza vaccine that is available will provide any cross protection for this new form of canine flu. As with the H3N8 version, some dogs may become very ill and even die from infection. Other dogs may have a mild illness or not show any signs of illness. Even the dogs who do not show any illness but have been exposed may shed and spread the virus. The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) has provided an excellent guide for dog owners. It is important to realize that dogs will be shedding and spreading the virus for two to five days before they show any signs of illness. Obviously once a dog shows any signs of coughing, nasal discharge or fever it should be isolated. The virus should not be able to survive in the environment for more than 48 hours and should be killed by common disinfectants. As a concerned dog owner, you need to make decisions about taking your dog to public places where many dogs can interact. It will be virtually impossible to disinfect a dog parks. Kennel owners and facilities that offer grooming and doggie daycare will be taking extra precautions to disinfect thoroughly. You may choose to hold off on those services during the time of any outbreaks. If your own dog shows any sign of illness, keep him home. Most of the care for dogs with influenza is supportive - making sure your dog rests, eats and has plenty to drink. Most dogs will fully recover in two to three weeks. Page 8
