More importantly, they are what makes the Club work. When you join IDTC, you are considered an active member for the first year. After that, active membership is maintained by putting in a minimum of 10 hours per year doing things for the Club, such as assisting or instructing a class, helping out at events (e. g. being a steward at trials, providing refreshments for a graduation, making arrangements to bring in a seminar speaker, etc.), or serving on a committee such as the Training Committee. Active members are also expected to regularly attend the monthly Club meetings. Your active/inactive status for a year is determined by your participation during the previous year. Page 2

4 Canine Social Workers: Ithaca Native Trains Therapy Dogs By Marjorie Olds; reprinted with permission from Ithaca Times as posted on Saturday, August 16, 2014 Native Ithacan Nancy Given was a stay-at-home-mom until her children were teenagers. Setting her sights on a college education she attended TC3 and then graduated from Cornell in Nancy described her first job after graduation, Project Coordinator for the Cornell Local Roads Program, as wonderful. But in the back of her mind Nancy had always dreamed of creating a boarding kennel, and for the next ten years she cared for hundreds of dogs and cats in her well-known and well-loved Pokohaven Kennel. When her animal guests were quiet Nancy pursued graduate work; and in 1993 she received a Master of Arts in Theology from St. Bernard s Theological Institute in Rochester. During her last year at St. Bernard s, the Schuyler County Council of Churches asked Nancy to work in their chaplaincy program at the Schuyler Hospital and Skilled Nursing facility. I found, she said, that if I brought along my adorable, well trained ShiTzu to my chaplaincy visits, folks were more than happy to start a conversation with me. The program grew into a regular gathering of groups of folks so more animals were added to enhance the group interactions. In 2009 Beverly King, a supervising social worker with New York State s Office of Children and Family Services, and Roseanne Moresco, a now retired Ithaca City School District physical education teacher proposed a canine training program for young men living within teen prisons. Nancy Given, the third partner, developed the curriculum and together with community volunteers brings untrained rescue puppies and dogs to facilities for training in preparation for adoption. We needed a good, reliable demonstration dog for the classes, Given said, and Tinsel, a rescued Great Pyrenees pup, was an obvious choice. From the day Tinsel arrived at my home at 12 weeks of age from a Kentucky shelter, she was targeted to be a therapy dog, and her training and socialization began immediately. Even before the OCFS program was underway, Tinsel logged many hours visiting area skilled nursing facilities and day treatment centers for developmentally challenged adults. A typical day for Tinsel when we are scheduled at a facility involves a long car ride from Mecklenburg, through Ithaca, and over the hills on country roads to an often remote location. We enter a number of secure areas each of which has a door that clangs shut behind us as a new door is buzzed open. The clanging and buzzing doesn t faze Tinsel anymore, although initially she would startle a bit with each loud noise. She quietly waits while all of the volunteers are scanned, and then she walks without hesitation through more locked doors on our way to the designated training area. We have held so many training sessions over the years that Tinsel knows the way and will turn and face each appropriate door as we travel the hallways. Teens who have been incarcerated face huge barriers when trying to find employment after release. Some occupations are closed to them; for many jobs they lack the requisite credentials. The Canine Companions Program provides the basic tools for work in an animal shelter, a pet store, or a veterinarian s office. The young men Tinsel greets each week learn basic methods of positive obedience training plus units on agility training, grooming, and first aid in their six-week course. It also provides a unique therapeutic setting for teens and pets. No matter the number of students, dogs, and community volunteers in Nancy s course each week, Tinsel is the lead dog. Tinsel does all of the demonstrations in each week s class. She is handed over to each student so he can practice a new exercise before trying to teach the exercise to an untrained dog. Tinsel is also perfect for teaching students how to trim nails and properly brush a long-haired dog. With her quiet demeanor and wonderful response to commands, she is perfect for the first aid practice. She lies quietly on her side while a general assessment of her condition following an injury takes place. She doesn t move while a muzzle is tied behind her ears; and she is totally relaxed while a splint is applied to her broken leg. Nancy, the stay-at-home mom, and Tinsel, the rescued puppy from Kentucky, have a traveled a long way since meeting. As we age, if we are fortunate, we become who we were meant to be. 5 Training Committee The training committee is starting to put together our winter session classes as follows: Wednesday Beg 1, Beg 2, Puppy Tuesday Novice, Open/Utility Clicker or Fun class Friday Agility League (Joe and Tammy Osmeloski Agility class 1 or 3 We are looking for instructors and assistants to volunteer and remember all the new "perks" for teaching or assisting: 1. You get active credit 2. You get a certificate (tranasferrable) for 1 free class 3. If you live a long distance away, you are entitled to mileage 4. We were invited to come in costume; nobody actually did, but we made up for it with the good variety of dogs we brought. Margie Peech with Neville the Cavalier was there almost the whole time (they were also at the Newfield Old Home Days parade in September - Neville is going to be the best socialized dog anywhere!). Joan Shaw also came out, and brought both the biggest and the smallest dogs: Rottweiler King (short for King Kong, very appropriate given his size) and a Min Pin whose name I didn't get. Marg Pough did double duty for IDTC and FLKC, with one of her Border Terriers. Deb Bain, a loyal Expo attendee, arrived in the afternoon & stayed to help pack up all the materials. Pat Welch was there too, showing the public her Irish Water Spaniel, a breed you don't see every day. I started the day with one Siberian husky, took a lunch break, & returned with a different Sibe. Many thanks to all of you for showing a good face of IDTC to the world, and sorry if I missed anyone. We had a table with brochures, and our club refrigerator magnets, and gave out information to quite a few people, although of course most of the visitors just wanted to pet the dogs. Ithaca has an educated public - most of them, even the children, asked if it was OK before going up to the dogs. If you have a dog who likes kids, the Pet Expo is the place to go! Volunteers Needed Holiday Party! Contact Joe Osmeloski to help! ttia607@gmail.com MAKE as many great gifts as you can to be auctioned off Bring a gift in the $10 dollar range for the "steal a gift" gift exchange game, and remember, it can be ANYTHING, dog related, people related, crazy, funny etc. The more that participate, the more fun the game is. VOLUNTEERS, to help setup, collect money and run auctions etc. Terri Clingerman Seminar Contact Bruce Coleman to help! brucecoleman@frontiernet.net Opening the building by 8:00am and closing the building at the end of the day (4:30-5:00pm) Setting up breakfast (mainly coffee) and going out for lunch Page 5

6 2014 IDTC Interclub The Ithaca Dog Training Club participated in another fun and exciting Interclub Match on Sunday, Oct 5. IDTC came in 3rd out of the four clubs competing. All the teams showed well, with occasional oops moments. The team consisted of: Utility: Deb Bain and Springer, Tryx & Joan Myer and Min Pin, Victor Open: Chris O Brien and Aussie, Jazz & Tammy Snyder and Rottie, Flint Novice: Sue Yanoff and Beagle, Ivy & Kerry Boisvert and Border terrier, Lark The judge commented on how nice it was to see so many different breeds competing. IDTC certainly had a nice variety. Honorable mention goes to Jan Estes, who was there as the Open alternate. Although she did not get to show, she photographed, videoed, and cheered the team on. Anne Williams and Nancy Almann were also there supporting the team. After the competition, we all enjoyed Dinosaur BBQ, and all the great side dishes and desserts the participants made. 11 CANY County Youth Pheasant Hunt By Diane Krause I have the privilege to be a repeat volunteer dog handler at the Broome County Youth Pheasant Hunt through the Conservation Alliance of New York (CANY). This year my husband also joined me at the event and handled Jack (who is 10 ½ yrs old), one of our four German Shorthaired Pointers, for the kids. The hunt is hosted by the Molyneaux Family. I have great admiration for this family for giving so much by letting the kids use their property to learn about wing-shooting. Paul, Bill and Larry are three wonderful volunteers that every year pick up the birds from the DEC, give personal instruction on shooting with the kids and all the other behind the scene functions. The event is top notch! Each child receives individual instruction and actual shooting of clay targets before the hunt, they are questioned about guns and gun safety, supplied with all the ammo for the bird hunt, given an orange hat from the organization and if they come without a gun they can also have one of those supplied. Each year I have met wonderful kids and parents. The CANY Group offers morning and afternoon hunts Saturday and Sunday. I see the bird hunting interest rising in females and I think the girls like to have a female dog handler too. The organization supplies a cookout for lunch, salads, drinks etc. for everyone who attends. This group works very hard at trying to introduce young people to the world of wing-shooting by being SAFE FIRST. My first job out in the field is safety but after that I try to explain to the kids the world of the pointing dog. I handled my Emma (who is 8 ½ yrs old) this year and showed the kids how she uses her nose to work the wind to find birds. I explain to them how GSPs hunt by quartering the field. I show them when she is getting birdie and she will be going on point once she is in the scent cone. As the day goes on I can hear the kids say to each other better get ready Emma is getting birdie. It makes me smile because I know they have been listening to me. Each kid has the opportunity to harvest two birds. I have made sure that each in my group goes home with at least one. I can not explain to you in words the pride in these kids faces when I place the pheasant in their back pouch after my dog has retrieved their shot bird. At the end of day all who have harvested a pheasant that day has their name placed in a hat and one name is drawn for a free pheasant mount donated by a local taxidermist. Every kid I have guided has given my dog a hug, a pet on the head or both and said Thank You to them at the end of the day! What more could you ask for! I am proud that my dogs become ambassadors of the breed to people who have no idea what a GSP is all about! My message to all is pick something that you love to do or you are proud of and shares it with someone! You will always find the time to do that J CANY mission statement is to secure hunting, fishing, trapping and other sub stainable activities which use New York s renewable natural resources, and to collaborate with others who share our vision. 12 Tracking Seminar at Lenape Tracking Club Tammy Snyder General Meeting October 28, 2014 The meeting began with a talk by Tammy Snyder about her trip to Plainfield, New Jersey for a two day tracking seminar with the Lenape Tracking Club. The Club has been active in putting on tracking events, and certifications since 1975, and does the Tracking Experience Day each spring in April or May. The Club has three members with a Championship Tracking title which includes titles in all three AKC levels, the TD (tracking dog), TDX (tracking dog excellent) and VST (variable surface tracking) which includes everything from asphalt parking lots to fields. Tammy was impressed with the first morning s Power Point presentation and handouts that made it very easy to follow the seminar and to teach her own class this fall. More than half the dogs and handlers in the class had no previous experience in tracking, yet did surprisingly well in the field the second day with the detailed information provided during the first day. By setting up stations for Map Making, Line Handling, Measured Distance Calculation and several others, handlers received training without their dogs before going into the field to practice tracking the second day. In a four week session this Fall Tammy taught IDTC s first Tracking Class with the information she had gained from the Tracking Seminar in New Jersey. Modelled after the Tracking Experience Day in New Jersey but spread over four class days instead of two. The class began the first session indoors at Baker Lab and later out at the fields on Game Farm Road without the dogs. The next three sessions were held in Candor at fields on Hannah Robinson s property. For the second session, a friend of Tammy s and member of the Lenape Club came to help Tammy coach with her Rottweiler (TD, TDX). She was impressed with both the newbies abilities and the fact that Tammy had gotten the class organized. Dogs and handlers made their own tracks across the field, which they had learned in the first day s session using food along the track at regular intervals for the first few times. It quickly became obvious that the dogs knew the game and did not need as much or in some cases any luring to follow the scent of the handler s steps to reach the final article, (a leather glove), usually laced with some special treat for training. Though dogs started on a regular six foot lead and a harness, most dogs had graduated to the longer required 40 tracking line by the fourth session, allowing the handler to stay at least 20 back from the working dog. Speaking as a participant in the class it was fascinating to see how differently dogs work at tracking. There were five breeds or mixes of dogs represented in the class and each had their own style. The sport is suitable for all ages of dogs from 3 or 4 months on up to the older dog, who may not need the physical stress of agility, dock diving or other very active dog sports. We all had fun learned a great deal about our dogs, and, despite all of the rainy days I would recommend this class to anyone wanting to try a new activity with their dog. Hannah Robinson, Secretary Lucille Straub, IDTC historian has asked anyone with hard copy photos and news of any event at IDTC to submit them to her for inclusion in albums or posters for display at public and club events. There is very little in the last ten years that isn t digital and Lucille doesn t do digital! Please contact her with your hard copy items either by phoning: (message machine) or at 82 Sperry Lane, Lansing NY Page 12

13 2014 IDTC Tracking Class By Tammy Snyder Well the first ever IDTC tracking class is now over. We had 7 participants who are now well on their way to successful tracking with their dogs. We had all different breeds, American Water Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Mixed breed, German Shepherd, Border Collie, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, and a Malinois. All the dogs seemed to be pretty natural trackers. Handlers started their tracks with food on the track, and many of the dogs were ignoring the food after a short time. After 4 weeks of class (1 of which was a marathon session on theory and scent), all the dogs are working on the tracks, and today did about 200 yards of straight line tracking with parts of the track being aged close to 20 minutes for some. Everyone is working on turns, and will be able to add length and age to their tracks as they progress forward. I have to say, of all the classes I have taught with IDTC this was the most dedicated bunch I have seen in a long time. Every session we had on the field included some rain. Tempered with hot beverages, breakfast and some light hearted conversation, we had a great class. I want to thank Hannah for the use of her beautiful piece of property on the mountain. It really was a trackers dream. I also want to thank Lynne Anguish, Lynne Wilks, Hannah Robinson, Janet Hansen, Phil Ragusa, Shirley Kielmann, and Tammy Roberson for sticking it out in the rain to learn the art of tracking. I truly enjoyed watching all of you and your dogs figure out what you wanted. Watching you learn to trust the dog on the end of the leash was wonderful. You all built some great teamwork out there where the dog gets to lead the way. The focus of this class was beginning tracking concepts, how to get started, starting to age, adding length, and starting to work on turns. We got way further than I imagined, working with a group of mostly complete novices with regard to tracking. It s due to their hard work, that we got further than I dreamed. I did some demos with my own dogs, and we debriefed each week to see where folks thought they needed some help. Today, our last day on the field, we also introduced the concept of entering the woods (a TDX component), that most if not all the dogs in the class will be ready to try very shortly. We spoke a lot about theory and how terrain and wind affect the track and that theory translated well into the real life situations we laid out. As the sun sets I am smiling and thankful for working with a club that embraces training beyond the AKC ring. We have such a diverse group that has much to offer to the club at large. Thanks to all for the work you put in every year to keep this club going! Happy Tracking! Lynne & Ruby Hannah & Belle Phil & Shelly Lynne & Nica Janet & Rondo Page 13
