JUNE 2016 JUNE MEETING 4th Tues of each Month! Date: 6/28/2016 Location: TBD Board: 6:00pm Program: 7:00pm Watch the e-list for updates! Inside this issue: Ramblings from Prez 1 Who s Who 2 May Mtg Minutes 3 TC Updates 3 AKC ACT 4 CPE Send Off 4 Interclub 4 Volunteer Time! 4 Parade 5 Brags 6 Pet Disaster Trailer 8 Calendar 9 Reprinted with permission Ramblings from IDTC President Hello fellow dog trainers, Summer has finally arrived in Ithaca. What that means to me is more frequent walks with my dogs, picnics, training outside and trials of all kinds outside. Hopefully this summer, the weather will cooperate and we ll have many beautiful days and fewer not so nice days. To kick off Ithaca s summer, was the Ithaca Festival and the club was well represented at the Ithaca Festival Parade. I usually march in this, but had tickets to a wonderful performance of Oklahoma at the Merry Go Round Theatre in Auburn. It looks like fun was had by all. Our clubs CPE Agility trial is right around the corner (it might be over by the time you read this, in fact), and we have 2 picnics lined up at Meyers Park in Lansing during meeting nights in July and August. The Training Committee is once again looking for instructors, the beginner classes especially. If you didn t know, there is a protocol for applying to be an assistant and/or an instructor. If you are interested, please talk to a member of the Training Committee. You don t have to have any titles to be an assistant, but we do have some higher standards for instructors. Please let someone know if you are interested. In the same vein, instructors, if you notice someone in your advanced classes that you think would make a good instructor, mentor them. Please, please, please!!! Without instructors, we might as well not have a club as that is what the principle part of this clubs mission statement is about. With that said, the club is traversing some rough water at the moment and I hope it all comes out intact when this bridge has been crossed. Have a good summer and have fun with your dogs Respectfully Submitted DEADLINE FOR THE JULY NEWSLETTER IS 7/5/2016 Page 1

More importantly, they are what makes the Club work. When you join IDTC, you are considered an active member for the first year. After that, active membership is maintained by putting in a minimum of 10 hours per year doing things for the Club, such as assisting or instructing a class, helping out at events (e. g. being a steward at trials, providing refreshments for a graduation, making arrangements to bring in a seminar speaker, etc.), or serving on a committee such as the Training Committee. Active members are also expected to regularly attend the monthly Club meetings. Your active/inactive status for a year is determined by your participation during the previous year. Page 2

General Meeting Minutes IDTC General meeting Minutes May 24, 2016 Submitted by: Tammy Osmeloski, Secretary Meeting began at 7:20pm. 19 IDTC members present. The minutes, as published in the April/May newsletter were accepted. Secretary s Report: Tammy Osmeloski reported that IDTC members (except Mallorie Morse) who haven t paid their 2016 dues (by April 30) have been dropped from the clubs membership roster and removed from the Yahoo list. Treasurer Report: Lynne Anguish presented the treasurers report: checking $22,029.29, savings $ , CD#1 $10,333.60, CD#2 $6, There was a mysterious withdrawal from the PayPal account for $1.71. Marian Szebenyi said it was to pay the balance due on the website hosting. Training Committee report: Spring classes are finished and went well. The May & June classes have been canceled through the club, but are still being held privately. Fall classes are planned to start the end of August. IDTC Board of Directors report: Mallorie Morse, who is secretary for our upcoming CPE trial, is delinquent in her 2016 dues. She will be contacted about this matter. Ann Lynn has looked into our not-for-profit status and discovered we are already a 501(c)4 club. With 501(c)4 donations are not tax deductible (with 501(c)3 donation are tax deductible). It was decided that the club won t bother filing for 501(c)3 status as we don t receive any donations. Ann will also look into getting the IDTC a tax ID number so club purchases won t be taxed. The Board discussed making the club more accessible to junior members with reduced fees and activity requirements. Old Business: Jami Landry reported that the Animal Science Department is seriously considering changing the flooring in the Pavilion and the matter is now with the finance department. The constitution committee is doing the 5 yr. review of the IDTC constitution and by-laws. The appointed members are Lynne Anguish (chairperson), Deb Bain, Rue Chagoll, Marg Pough and Tammy Osmeloski. New Business: Lynne will look into organizing a Temperament Test (through the American Temperament Testing Society) for September at Treman State Park. Dogs must be at least 18 months old. The possibility of the IDTC doing something for Responsible Dog Ownership Day was discussed. The IDTC will partake in the Ithaca Parade June 3rd. We need people and dogs to participate. Kathy MacCheyne was voted in as a new member. Marian Szebenyi asked for comments regarding the website, the suggestions were as follows: Having the downloadable forms in PDF format that can be filled in on-line. Using PayPal to pay for classes. An on-line file for rabies and vaccination records. Change the classes to electronic registration, thus streamlining the process of signing up for classes. Chris O Brien offered to help facilitate a streamlining discussion regarding the class registration process. Marian offered to look into changing the forms that are currently on the website to a PDF format for easier access. The membership requested that this be brought up with the Board. There is an issue between some of the IDTC members and the current training director. It was asked that these differences not be discussed at this meeting. The Board has requested that members who have had problems with the current training director an unemotional statement detailing the problem to Lynne Anguish, (lynne.anguish@gmail.com). If they wish, the Board will then read these comments while they consider what action (if any) will be taken on this matter. The process the Board will take will be outlined on the Yahoo list by Lynne. If possible an outside facilitator will be present to oversee the Board meeting. Meeting adjourned at 8:15 IDTC Training Committee Updates No classes for the summer, looking for instructors and assistants for the fall classes to start in late August, if you are interested in teaching or instructing, please contact Rue Chagoll at rchagoll@capital.net Page 3

AKC ACT Event Susan Morse Anne Williams and I attend the first ACT event in NY this past weekend at DOTCORNY. It is something we really should consider putting on for people that want to get started in agility or have a baby dog the want to start in a show setting. It was very well run and more like a match so not as much pressure as a big event. Not as expensive, course are short and fun, can be put on by a non AKC club, AKC suggest it could be used like a graduation and if done correctly could be a small money maker. For more detail and rules you can look on the AKC web site. The judge doesn t have to be an AKC judge but AKC does require the judge to have excellent titles, take an open book test with AKC, register with them and have courses reviewed or from the AKC library. We were fortunate to have Dee Crawford, an AKC agility judge, to judge for this event. She was a good person to introduce the sport to many beginners that attended. I would be glad to answer questions as well. INTERCLUB Sue Yanoff MVDTC will host the Interclub match on October 9, 2016 at the SOTC building. The judge will be Dino Gadaleta. Judging will begin at 10:00 starting with Utility, followed by Open and ending with Novice. Team order will be MVDTC, IDTC, SNKC, SOTC. We need 3 dogs for each class (2 participants and an alternate). Let me know if you are interested in representing IDTC. Best of luck to Debbie Keith (Team Kip) and Tammy Roberson (Team Levi) at the CPE Nationals in June!! Have a ball! Bark for Life May 28, 2016 Marian Szebenyi Marian and Tom Szebenyi attended the Chemung County Bark for Life on May 28 as representatives of IDTC and ran a CGC test. We had 6 people enter, of which 1 passed; the dogs were sweet and generally well-behaved, but mostly not quite prepared for the "stay" and/or "come" tests. The event was a fund-raiser for cancer research, and I think it succeeded well in attracting donations as well as providing many (mostly) young people a chance to get out with their dogs. Besides walking for donations and the CGC, there were fun contests such as bobbing for hot dogs and a costume competition. It was very hot, but there was a cooling pool for the dogs and plenty of shade. Newfield Old Home Days July 30, 2016 Newfield Old Home Days has invited us to march in their parade, Saturday, July 30. We have done this several times in the past, although not every year. It's a good chance to get out and work your dog in public. If you are interested, please let Marian Szebenyi know. If there is enough interest, she will sign up IDTC for a spot in the parade. Page 4

IDTC had a small but mighty presence at the 2016 Ithaca Festival parade. Weather was perfect! We had several new parade members and a wide variety of dogs march this year. My thanks to: Marian & Tom Szebenyi (cart pullers and creative sign makers), Pat Welch, Peggy Anderson, Jamie Landry, Kyra Marsigliano, and Holly & Jamie Kalousdian. 6 IDTC BRAGS Diane Krause Sonny & Kendyl Krause earned their 2nd Excellent Fast SOTC on 5/7/16 Emma earned CDX legs #1 and #2 at the SOTC trials this past weekend in Open A. Thanks to all that have been so supportive through our obedience ventures! Susan Morse The Morse gang traveled down to Berryville VA for the AMBC National Lure coursing ability test. Holly received two legs in the Vet division and Jam received two legs in the regular division. The following weekend Jam went to the first DOTCORNY ACT agility trial (first one in NY) and qualified at one of the two test. This is a new title one can get for Agility and is considered the introduction to agility. Cane had a busy weekend first attending the PENNYASC rally two shows in one day trial where he received two seconds, two first and a high combine. This also increased his points for his rally CH. This is the first time Cane and Susan showed outside in rally so not too bad. The next day he ran in three classes and queued in three classes at the CPE trail. Holly also went to CPE trial and ran and queued in four out of four classes. A nice surprised arrived in the mail from American Belgian Malinois Club (ABMC) Parent Malinois club for AKC, of a trivet award for Kiss (now 14 years 3 plus months and still running around) for being in the Agility Hall of Fame for AMBC. The following day, I received a 25 year membership pin from ABMC. Wow that long with Malinois! 47 Trivet award. 58 Cane s weekend ribbons Bruce & Audrey Coleman Over the May 15-16th weekend, the Coleman team won three classes, a High In Trial and a High Combined. We showed at the German Shepherd Specialties in Seneca Falls, New York. The weather Saturday was threatening and on Sunday it was cold and extremely windy. This made scent discrimination challenging. On Saturday Fanny earned another leg towards her UDX3 with a score of She won the Utility B class and earned 10 OTCH points. Vinny won the Open B class with a 196.5, earned 2 OTCH points and went High in Trial. On Sunday, Vinny won the Utility B class with a and earned 6 OTCH points. Mira s finished titles: Agility: 4/16 Susquenango OAP, 5/16 Afghan Hound OJP, 5/16 DOTCORNY NFP. Obedience: AKC 5/16 German Shepherd Specialty, Seneca Falls, BN (all scores in the mid-190 s) Katelyn Davis Golden Retriever, Trig, competed in his 1st ever CPE agility trial in May. The weekend goal was to not get kicked out of the ring and make it through the entire course. He surpassed the goal and earned 6 Qs! Nancy Almann In the last couple of months, Kiyo & Toka have been earning legs towards nose work titles through Performance Scent Dog. Toka passed his Birch Target Odor Test and earned legs in exteriors, interiors and speed with placements. Kiyo completed legs in distance, exteriors & buildings and earned her novice exterior title, all with placements. Kiyo 'first placed' her way to her first agility title, earning a CPE Standard title at trials held at Paws for Thought May 21 & 22. Page 6

IDTC BRAGS Jackie Gumtow Phoebe completed her Rally Novice title on Friday May 13th at the Iroquois GSD Club show in Seneca Falls with a 1st place. A very windy day as you can see by the picture. Anne Williams On 5/1 at the APDA Invitational, Falcon, Belgian Tervuren, won the 61 to 75 pound class and A Tatu, Belgian Malinois was second in the 31 to 45 pound class. On May 14th, Reve, Belgian Tervuren, had two awesome Barn Hunt runs and finished his Open Title with a 1st and 4th place. Kathy Hildreth Both my boys, Magic, and Wizard were entered in the Pawsitively Awesome CPE trial at Paws for Thought Farm on 5/ Magic had a Perfect weekend. He Q'd in all 8 runs 1st in 7, and 2nd in 1. He was one of 4 dogs total in the 45C group to be successful on a very difficult Jackpot course. He completed his 54th Snooker Q, his 30th for his ExSn title. Wizard Q'd in 5 of 6 runs, all 1sts, but most were not pretty. With just one more Level 2 standard Q he will be eligible to move up to Level 3 in all classes. Kerry Boisvert Tux finished his Novice Fast title at Jones Road. Katie Barnaby Mabel finished her UD at the SOTC obedience shows in June. She is such a good girl! Marg Pough At the SOTC obedience trials, Devlin got RAE legs #4 and #5. Ann Lynn With limited training, Tammy Snyder earned an AKC Open Agility Preferred with my Golden, Worf Top Flight's Cayuga Klingon MH NJP OAP WCX. We started in Goldens in Houston (where Bretagne is from) and got our first dogs from Mercedes Hitchock's Belvedere lines. Bretagne's dad was one of Mercedes' dogs, he is behind two of my dogs and the full sib of one of Bruce Coleman's dogs. Margie Peech Cavalier Neville earned his Open Barn Hunt title (RATO) at the Central Bark barn hunt trial on 5/15. Chris O Brien Over the Memorial Day weekend, my husband Paul and I competed in the NYS Muzzleloading Association s Spring Shoot in Oxford, NY. Paul placed 1st in both the Mountain Man Knife & Tomahawk throwing competitions, and 3rd in the 25 yard off-hand Bottle Target shoot. I placed 2nd in the Lady s 25 yard off-hand target and 1st in the Lady s 25 yard off-hand Bottle target shoot. At the June SOTC Obedience trials, Fleck went 4 for 4 earning her first two legs in both Beginner s Novice and Rally Advanced. Deb Bain At the Iroquois GSD Club, my younger English Springer Spaniel, Dealer, earned his first CDX leg. It was his first show in Open, first outdoor show, the weather was HORRIBLE! He got first place! Dealer also earned his second CDX leg at SOTC s shows this weekend. He got 2nd place out of a class of 20. Holly Kalousdian Another first for Holly. She has never been in the newspaper before and because of her involvement and enjoyment with IDTC she can t say that anymore. :-) She was captured at the Ithaca Festival jumping Carson. He was such a trooper. He must have jumped 30 or 40 times but the crowd loved it and hopefully he did too. Although he did want to lay for quite awhile after the parade. It didn t take him long to get up and join the crowd - something else that makes him happy people that he can say hi to. Shirley Kielmann Blue earned two legs towards his jumpers novice title in April at the PawsSusque-Nango trials. Sat 96 points and Sun 100 points. Only their second time at an agility trial. On 6/2 at the Olean KC, Winners Dog 3 point major and his Champion title. On 6/3, Select Dog in Group. This is the first dog that Shirley has ever done any of this with. It s been a journey for both of them. Shirley reports: I don t think I could have done this without the support of all my friends in the Ithaca Dog Training Club and my family. Page 7
