2 2 Rodsden s Breezy of Windya CDX, RE, CGC earned her first three RAE Legs! First leg at the Racine Kennel Club on March 27 th and the second on April 3 rd at the Clinton Iowa Kennel Club with a First Place in Rally Excellent B and a Fourth Place in Rally Advanced B, and her third leg April 4 th at the Clinton Iowa Kennel Club with a Second Place in Rally Excellent B and third Place in Rally Advanced B! Go Breezy Go! Bonnie Bell UD, RE earned her Seventh UDX Leg also at the Racine Kennel Club on March 27 th with very good scores for a Senior Canine Citizen and took Fourth Place in Utility B on April 3 rd at the Clinton Iowa Kennel Club. She continues to give her all every time! JOAN MAZAT Jacalyn Joan Klem, 10 years old at the show, Junior Showmanship, she got a Blue Ribbon. Her Grand Championship in Obedience and Reserve GCh. In Dog Care and Grooming and Blue Ribbon in Junior Showmanship gave her the points to win Versatility Grand Champion which is highest combined points in all three in her age group, 8 to13. This makes her eligible for State. Joan Klem THANKS to Candy Heideman for letting me have the pleasure of running agility with Shimmer. We began our show career recently in UKC and in 3 shows we earned 3 clean runs with two 1st placements and one 2nd place. She is such a sweet dog and she looked so beautiful just flowing through the course. When we got done with our runs people applauded how good she was - but I don't take credit for that. She's Candy's dog and she couldn't be anything but wonderful!!! So Thanks to Candy and Thanks to Shimmer for allowing me to do one of the things I really love! And more agility is in our future too - CPE? AKC? NADAC? ASCA? - stay tuned! Julie Dorsey-Oskerka

3 3 Kamba and Lynn Weis went to the Interlocking Shetland Sheepdog Club Specialty April 9TH and 10TH. On Friday he got his first UDX leg. Kamba got a second place in Utility. He got first place in Open with a 198, and that was High in Trial. Saturday he got a second place in Utility. Sunday he went to the Yorkville Kennel Club show in DeKalb. He won Highest Scoring Shetland Sheepdog. Sunday, April 25TH Lynn Weis attended the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at Brookfield Zoo. She won the TWIGA And MORE BRAGS Lyn Whiston with Zoey, graduating from the beginner class. Candy Heideman and Gina Post instructors. Zoey was terrified when she came, would not even walk in the ring. CONGRATULATIONS TO LYN for working through it!! Practice Gratitude. 6 6 health watch COCOA MULCH This product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it." *Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells li ke chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine. Handling Household Toxins "Chocolates, onions, raisins, grapes, various plants, as well as household chemicals are commonly ingested by animals, or people give their pets over the counter medications, such as Tylenol or Advil or Aleve, and all of these can be very, very toxic or fatal to pets," says Dr. Mazzaferro. If you suspect your pet may have ingested something toxic, the best thing to do is to call the ASPCA National Poison Control Center, a 24-hour hotline at (888) and take your pet immediately to a veterinary hospital. (FYI, a $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card for the ASPCA Poison Control service.) Don't try to induce vomiting without professional advice, it can be dangerous.

7 7 tip submitted by Joan Ragan Thunderstorm season is upon us. Is your dog afraid of storms? Does he or she shake uncontrollably or hide under the bed? You might want to try this suggestion mentioned on a television program about just this subject. For several Airedale owners, it seemed too simple. But after several tests, they found it to work very nicely. Here is what Joan had to say: W hen the dogs start to stress from a coming storm, take a clothes dryer sheet - any kind - it does not matter. Do not wet it, just take a sheet and wipe the dog gently all over, head to toe, chest, feet, all of him. Within 10 minutes your dog will relax and stop the nonsense of a storm. Breezie took a nap. Cindi Mysyk s Willie slept through a storm. It lasts about 4 hours. If it is still storming, use another dryer sheet and they will relax again. Supposedly just before a storm, the barometer rises, dogs sense the static in the air and they start becoming stressed. The dryer sheet breaks the static, they no longer feel it and will act like nothing is going on. The static in the air is why so many of them exhibit signs of stress. Joan has found that using the dryer sheet works best if you use it at the first signs of stress. This could be up to several hours before the storm actually arrives. Dealing With Heatstroke Heatstroke is especially a risk during summer months. Signs include panting, increased respiratory sounds, collapse, seizure, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. "Get the animal away from the heat immediately," says Dr. Mazzaferro. "Soak towels in room temperature or tepid water -- not cold water or ice and place the wet towels over the dog and put a fan in the room to allow ambient cooling." Put the towels over the dog's torso, over their back, chest and abdomen. "The mistake people make is dousing the animal in ice-cold water, and that can actually cause the blood vessels in the skin to constrict and it could cause the animal's core temperature to rise and make the temperature worse," says Dr. Mazzaferro. "The most important thing is to get the animal to the vet. They may need intravenous fluids if they're severely dehydrated."
