2 Dog Talk With Judy With spring arriving, I thought I'd share some tips that I've learned from the grooming shop where I work. We see many dogs that are coming in for the first time since fall. Many people don't think to wash their dog as much or have them groomed as often in the winter time. Some people say that washing a dog too often can cause a dry coat, a thin coat or dry skin. If a good shampoo is used and it's rinsed completely out of the dogs coat, there s no reason not to wash your dog as often as you'd like. I wash my 2 toy dogs every week and my 8 month old Newf puppy almost that often. A professional Newf groomer once told me that "clean hair grows new hair" and I can see that in my puppy's coat. It's plenty thick and shiny and he has healthy, non-dry skin. A good, strong blow dryer used on the dog before washing, will loosen up the dead, clumping hair before washing and it will make the bath and comb out afterward much easier. This works well on dogs that have a double coat with a lot of undercoat. Some dogs that haven't been bathed in a while, can get a greasy-like feel to them; diluted dish soap ( I use Dawn) helps to remove that film from their coats. That works well if the hair around an ear is oily from ear infection medicine too. I try and clip my dogs toenails every week or 2 to keep them from getting too long and it keeps the blood vein inside the nail from getting too far down the nail also. As far as teeth brushing, the Newfs are so easy. They have big mouths and it's very easy to get in there with a toothbrush to clean their teeth. My little dogs are another story. My vet told me that toy dogs generally get more plaque and decay on their teeth than large dogs do. He said sometimes, it can be genetic. My Maltese is especially bad and even though at 9 years old, I've had her teeth cleaned by the vet several times, she's lost many of the front ones from the gums receding. I try and be more diligent about brushing the toy dogs teeth for that reason. But the brushing doesn't remove plaque; once the plaque starts to build up, a dental pick or scraper helps to clean the gum line of this. It's very hard for me to do this on the small dogs. With such tiny mouths and my eyesight not being what it used to be, It's a real challenge. One big plus to having a freshly bathed and groomed dog is that other people want to pet your dogs too! Judy Heinz 2 President Gerry Heinz Vice President Donna Darland Chairman Julie Sjullie 10 Secretary Fran Zelazny Treasurer Bill Bateman Paul Perkins 10 MORE BRAGS Julie Simmons 08 John Jackman 09 Dawn Parison 09 Saturn has been ranked for the year 2007 for Australian Shepherds Nationally, #2 in Open, #3 in Utility, and #2 in Blue and Gold (Open and Utility combined scores)!!!!
