5 Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course that has been designed by the judge. The only order from the judge will be Forward. The handler and dog proceed through the course at their own pace. The handler is guided through the course by numbered signs, which tell the handler what exercise is to be performed. For Rally Novice there will be 10 to 15 signs or stations as well as a Start and a Finish sign. Before judging begins, the judge explains the course to the handlers, gives them a copy of the course, and allows them minutes to walk the course without the dog. Unlimited communication from the handler to the dog is to be encouraged and not penalized. Handlers are permitted to talk, praise, encourage, clap their hands, pat their legs, or use any verbal means of encouragement. Multiple commands and/or signals using one or both arms and hands are allowed; the handler s arms need not be maintained in any particular position at any time. The handler may not touch the dog or make physical corrections. The dog is not required to be in perfect heel position. Rally Novice is performed on leash and deductions will be made for a tight leash or leash corrections. The long sits and downs have been eliminated. A handler may be required to halt, have their dog sit, down the dog and then move on to the next sign. The judge does not touch the dog at any time during the exercises, so instead of a stand for exam exercise (for example) the handler would only stand the dog and then move on to the next sign. A perfect score in Rally is 100 points and at least 70 points are required for a qualifying score. Rally is also a timed event with time starting when the judge gives the order Forward and stops when the dog and handler cross the finish line. The time is only used in the event of a tie or ties.
