1 BARKS APRIL 2009 Monthly Newsletter of the Glenbard All-Breed Obedience Club Linda Lentini BRAGS On Friday February 13th 2009, at the Indy Winter Classic Obedience trials in Indianapolis Indiana, Ruger broke all superstitions and earned this 3rd leg for his CD scoring rd place. This exiting event would not have happened without the incredible help from Ruger's favorite aunt, Aunt Cheri ( Cheri Nicholas)! Cheri made the trip to Indianapolis with Ruger and I. She was an awesome help and kept Ruger and I encouraged, calm and focused. Special thanks to Denita Jackman and Dave Parison for the training and pushing me to go for Ruger's CD title. Thanks so such! and Flip, Shadrack's Rock'n the Boat CD, earned their CDX on Feb. 15, 2009 at the Lakewood show in Madison, Wi. All legs were placements: (2 firsts and a third.) 3 Dog Training Big and Small I have been obedience training dogs for about 12 years. Wondering what to write for BARKS I thought of the most common question I get at shows and matches- "How do you go from training the such little dogs to such big ones? Before I got Flip (my Newfy) a year and a half ago, I put a UD on my 5 year old Yorkie, Dani. Before that, I showed Bea, my Maltese until she earned 19 UDX legs. I quit at 19 legs, just short of the UDX 2 because Bea was starting to stutter-step more Dog Talk With Judy and more before making the jumps. At her last show, she went to jump the bar, stuttered, jumped and hit the bar with her chest, flipped over it, and the bar fell on her. It was one of the heavy, wood bars and she weighs just 3 1/2 lbs so I decided that it was her last show. When I got Flip a year and a half ago, I began our working relationship with him, hoping to get a UDX eventually. It had been a while since I worked with a big dog and after Bea and Dani it was very nice to not to have to bend over all the time. I find that there are really not that many differences between training the big and small dogs. Each of my dogs was easy in that they all were food motivated. That doesn't mean the training went smooth though, the little dogs seemed to have more of their "own ideas" on how things should be done and with some exercises I had to spend more time in the teaching phase. Also, the praise/reward routine was different with them all. Bea, loved food and fetching a ball. Dani, wanted food and more food. Flip loves food of course, and also loves the play. The Maltese and Yorkie are every bit as much of dogs as any big dog; they don't know that they're small. Even though they're retired from obedience training, Dani and Bea want to be a part of everything I do. In my opinion the key to training them all was figuring out what motivated each dog to want to work, regardless of their size. Flip got his CDX on Feb. 15th and I plan on showing him in Utility this spring, eventually hoping to get our UDX. At this stage of my life, I must say I do prefer working the Newfy over the little dogs because they're much easier on my back. And, I was a little nervous leaving Bea and Dani in Open sits and downs because of how small they are. Luckily, I never had a problem with that. 3 THANK YOU Thank You from the Hopewalkers 2 and the Sit, Stay, Walk to Find a Cure teams regarding our obedience fun match that took place on March 14th to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. Please share this Thank you with your respective dog training clubs, instructors, students, friends, family and everyone that you told about our event. It is because of your generosity of spirit that our event was a huge success! Erin & Tom Rezmer (Hopewalkers 2 team) Cheri Nicolas and Sonja Sporleder (Sit, Stay, Walk to Find a Cure team)

4 50 th Anniversary/Awards Banquet Wow, what a great turn out we had for our 50 th Anniversary & Awards Banquet held on March 7 th! We were 2 people short of 50 members and guests attending for a fun filled night with lots of reminiscing. Thanks to the large number of members we had, we were lucky to have the whole room to ourselves. We were privileged to have long time member Joan Klem in attendance and also our newest members, David Crawford and Bette McMillan. We had a great dinner, had fun playing games and winning prizes (I won t mention the poor sports in the club!) and just had a nice evening socializing. Many people got up to speak to everyone and recall some of their favorite club memories or give thanks to the club and its members for training help. We had one new inductee into the Glenbard Hall of Fame for 2008 and that was Tracy McMahon and her Rottweiler Reno. Also an inductee from 2007, which I stupidly forgot to add to the hall of Fame book for the evening, Congrats to Joan Mazat & Bonnie (sorry again Joan). The Highest scoring members for our 2008 trial were Tracy McMahon & Reno for obedience on Saturday, Betty Smith & Mattie for obedience on Sunday, Linda Brannon & Fairoaks Natchez Trace for Rally on Saturday and Diane Oskerka & Arnstadt s Waveland Wagger for Rally on Sunday. Candy Ellis & Sunny earned our Highest scoring member in Novice A award in obedience for both days. Below is a list of all our hard working members who earned an award for 2008 and were honored at the banquet. Be sure to congratulate everyone next time you see them! Thank you to EVERYONE who attended and made the work of organizing it SO worth it! 5 2009 GABOC Agility Trial May 30 and 31 at Players Indoor Sports in Naperville Many have volunteered to help Thank-you! We still need more people. It does not have to be all day, people are needed morning and afternoon. Please come and spend a few hours or a whole day whatever you can do will be very helpful. In the March issue of BARKS we described the following jobs: Ribbons, Leash Runner, Bar Setter, Chute, Scribe Sheet Runner, Gate Steward, and Assistant Gate Steward. Descriptions of the remaining jobs follow. Donna Trial committee members are: Julie Sjulie, Julie Simmons, Dawn & Dave Parison, Barbara Palm, Tracy McMahon, Paul & Donna Darland and Trial Secretary: Beth Elliott. The premium is posted on Beth Elliott s website. Job Description: Scribe Responsibility: Write down the Judge s calls on the scribe sheet Items Needed: Clipboard Pen, Before Each Run: Sit next to the Transcriber and near the Timer at a location specified by the Judge Take the clipboard from the Transcriber that holds the sheet for the next dog before each run. (Note: If an Assistant Gate Steward is used, they may be the one to give you the sheet for the next dog). When the Gate Steward or the dog s handler calls out the dog s number or name, verify that you have the correct scribe sheet. If you do not have the right sheet, let the Timer know immediately so he/she can tell the handler not to start yet. The Transcriber and Assistant Gate Steward will also be checking before the sheet gets to you, but it s always good to double check. During Each Run: Keep your eyes on the Judge AT ALL TIMES while a dog is running. Whenever the Judge makes a signal to indicate a fault during the run, write down the letter for the appropriate fault on the scribe sheet. (There is a handout for hand signals and their corresponding letters). DO NOT watch the dog or write down any fault that the Judge does not call, even if you think you see an obvious fault. Marking Signals: If possible, use your finger to mark your spot on the sheet so you can write without looking down at the sheet. However, most Judges will hold their signal for a few seconds, so if needed, you should have time to quickly glance at the sheet before writing. All signals can be written on the bottom area of the scribe sheet; you do not need to indicate on which obstacle a fault occurred. After Each Run: Hand the clipboard and scribe sheet to the Transcriber (do NOT write down the time). The Transcriber (or Assistant Gate Steward) will hand you a new clipboard with the sheet for the next dog, or will have the clipboard ready on a chair or table for you to pick up. The Transcriber will write the time on the sheet while you start scribing for the next dog. Record Class Start & End Times: Before the class starts and when the class ends, write down the start and end times. A blank form should be included in the stack of scribe sheets to remind you to record this information. Hand signals & letters (also see picture sheet) R Refusal/Run out Closed fist W Wrong Course One open hand F Failure to Perform Two raised open hands ( touchdown ) T Table fault V sign with two fingers, or two hands in a T E Excused Whistle 5

6 6 Job Description: Timer Responsibilities: Verify that the Judge and Scribe are ready and tell the handler when it s OK to start. Time the dog s run NOTE: The same person must time the entire class. A class is defined as a particular level and jump height combination (for instance, Exc A Preferred 20 is one class, Exc A Preferred 16 is another, and Exc B 20 is another). A person may not time for a class in which they are competing. Items Needed: Stopwatch (additional to the one the Transcriber has) and a whistle Tasks: Before the Class Starts: Ensure that (1) you have a whistle, (2) there are two working stop watches available (one for you, one for the Transcriber to hold) and (3) that you are familiar with how to use them. From the Judge, get (1) the maximum course time for the class and (2) the obstacle after which the finish line is live (typically the second to last obstacle). Check with the Judge on where he/she would like the Timer to be located and verify that you know where the start and finish line markers are. Sit in a location where you can see down both start markers and both finish markers so that you get an accurate time (do not sit offset to the start or finish line). Because you have to work closely with the Scribe and Transcriber, Judges will typically design the course and start/finish locations so that you can see down both lines without having to leave your chair. Before Each Run: Quickly check the course to make sure things are ready for the next dog. Things to check: bars down, Bar/ Chute setters still on the course, previous dog under control. Look to the Judge and make sure s/he is ready to start. Tell the handler s/he may start. Typical start phrases are Go when Ready, Ready, Start now. Don t wait for the handler to indicate readiness; if they re still fussing with the dog and you tell them they can start, that may encourage the handler to finish their pre-run ritual and get started more quickly. Be nice, but keep things moving. Timing the Run: Make an obvious motion with your hand when you start and stop the stopwatch as a visual indication to the judge she/he needs to know when to begin and end judging and it may not be obvious from the judge s vantage point when the dog has crossed the line Start the stop watch as soon as any part of the dog crosses the start line, even if the handler has not indicated s/he is ready. Check the stopwatch immediately after you start it to ensure that it s working. Check the stopwatch periodically during the run to make sure it s still working. Stop the stop watch when any part of the dog crosses the finish line after it has become live. If maximum course time is exceeded and the team is not close to finishing, blow the whistle to alert the Judge that time has been exceeded and the team may be excused. Time will be marked as NT (no time) since the course was not completed. Watch Malfunctions: If the watch malfunctions within the first 3 obstacles, blow your whistle so the handler knows to stop. If more than three obstacles have been completed, wait until the run is finished and tell the Judge about the problem immediately. The Judge may have the dog rerun for time. Verify how the Judge wants to handle it, so the Scribe and Transcriber know how to mark the sheet. After Each Run: Give the stop watch with the time to the Transcriber (do NOT clear it first). Get a new cleared stop watch from the Transcriber to prepare for the next run. We need your brags, articles, and pictures. Send them to: gabocbarks@yahoo.com The deadline for the May 2009 BARKS is Tuesday May 10 Visit our website at

7 Job Description: Transcriber: Responsibilities: Write down the time for each dog on the scribe sheet Give the Timer a cleared stop watch and the Scribe a new sheet before each run Help to verify that the correct dog is being scored Hold the marked sheets until the Scribe Sheet Runner can take them Items Needed: Scribe Sheets, Several blank Scribe Sheets, Pens, Clipboard, 2 Extra Clipboards or Binder Clips, 1 Stopwatch (additional to the one the Timer has) Radio (if not near the Gate Steward) Tasks: Before the Class Starts: Check sheets against the check-in board and reorganize to account for dogs who are absent or who have been moved in the running order. If the dog is not checked in, turn the sheet sideways to remind yourself that the dog may not be there. This will ensure the least amount of interruptions during judging due to not having the correct sheet. Have extra blank scribe sheets, extra pens, spare stopwatch in case of unforeseen problems. Before & During Each Run: You will sit between the Timer and Scribe, in a location specified by the Judge. As the first dog is running, make sure you have ready a cleared stop watch and a clipboard holding the sheet for the second dog. These may be kept on a table or an extra chair within easy reach of you and the Timer. You will also have the scribe sheets for the rest of the class (a third clipboard or binder clip is good for these so they don t blow away). Immediately After Each Run: Take the stopwatch with the dog s time from the Timer. Take the marked scribe sheet from the Scribe. Give the Timer a new cleared stopwatch. Give the clipboard with the sheet for the next dog to the Scribe. Or. if the new stop watch and sheet are on a table, the Timer and Scribe may pick these up themselves. Record the Time: Write the time on the scribe sheet, writing the time exactly as it appears on the stop watch, to the nearest1/100th of a second. (For example: 1:03:34). Do not try to convert the time to seconds or add up faults the score table will do that. If time is under 1 minute, the first line for the time may be left blank (example: :45:05). If a dog was whistled off and has no time, write NT where the time would go. Clear the stop watch and put it where the Timer can easily reach it, or hold onto it until the next dog has finished running. Prepare for Next Run: Remove the marked sheet from the clipboard and give it to the sheet runner, if available, or hold onto it until the sheet runner returns. A fourth clipboard or a binder clip may be helpful for this so you can put it down without it blowing away. The Gate Steward will tell you who is due on the line next. Place the sheet for the next dog on the empty clipboard and put it where the Scribe can easily reach it, or hold onto it until the next dog finishes running Changes in Running Order: The Gate Steward may communicate changes in running order to you during the class. If so, reorganize the remaining sheets as needed to keep them in order and avoid delays. Alternatively, if an Assistant Gate Steward is used, they may arrange sheets for you, hold upcoming sheets, and communicate with the Gate Steward about changes in running order so all you need to do is write the time and clear the stop watch BEGINNER CLASSES Class No. Time Dates :30 p.m. April 6, June 15, :00 p.m. April 13, June 22, :45 p.m. April 20, June 29, PUPPY CLASSES :30 p.m. April 27, June 22,
