1 A Yorkshire family business for Yorkshire farmers! "January fill the ditch; snow or rain we don't care which. February fill the dyke; be it black or be it white." A good old saying (black referring to rain and white to snow) which is quite relevant so far in 2014! Hopefully the spring will be a little warmer than last year, but for those of you lambing, don t be caught out with twin lamb problems. Use our top selling product Sheep Natural Energy buckets, full of energy, minerals and natural vitamin E. On offer this month buy 10 and get 1 free! GREEN S CLASSIFIED Our classified paper is a great way to advertise products and services directly to local farmers & smallholders. We have several thousand customer details on our system and each month we send out the Newsletter and Classified paper to over 700 of these. Adverts are also published on our Website, Facebook and Twitter pages. You can advertise in our classified for as little as 10 a month, plus we offer a discount on 3 monthly adverts. So if you re looking for a relief milker or lambing assistant or if you have hay and straw for sale why not try advertising it with us. For more information call Anna on or anna@greensfarmsupplies.co.uk THE FARMER SUE TICKLE COLUMN (Please note- If you find the cardboard cut-out of Sue in this newsletter, bring her in to us and claim your 50 voucher!) Well done to Paul Proudley who found Sue in his last month s newsletter. 50 to Paul! Question: When should I treat my ewes with Heptavac P+ and what does it cover? Answer: Heptavac-P plus is used for the active immunisation of sheep as an aid in the control of lamb dysentery, pulpy kidney, tetanus, braxy, blackleg, black disease, clostridial metritis and pasteurella. Ewes should be vaccinated against these clostridial and pasteurella infections not only to protect her, but more importantly, the lamb(s) as they receive natural passive immunity from the ewe s colostrum. Without this vaccination lambs are left exposed to these infections and with no active immunity against them, they can become ill and die. If ewes are in the Heptavac system they will only require 1 booster injection, so if you lamb in April you need to be giving your booster mid-february. If ewes have never been vaccinated previously they must receive 2 injections, 4-6 weeks apart and 4-6 weeks before lambing. Please ask a member of Green s staff for our best advice. (Please note Giving 4ml Heptavac P+ in one dose instead of 2ml twice is a complete waste of time and money! More importantly it will not offer long term protection to either ewe or lamb)
2 \ COCCIDIOSIS It is best to prevent against coccidiosis rather than just treat animals that show signs of the disease. Even if you spot the signs of coccidiosis early, usually the damage is already done and once the disease is on your farm you will always have an issue. The damage the disease causes to the gut lining limits nutrient intake and lamb and calves that have suffered with the disease will never do as well as unaffected animals. If you have a history of coccidiosis on your farm we would recommend you use Vecoxan. Vecoxan is for the treatment and prevention of coccidial infections in lambs and to aid in the control of coccidiosis in calves. Remember to treat all animals in the same group. Available NOW in 5lt, 2.5lt & 1lt packs! COSY CALF JACKETS With the use of calf jackets you can make significant savings on feed, medication and bedding costs, by better conversion of energy to growth rather than warmth and reduce the risk of pneumonia and scours from chills and draughts. Optimum protection at low temperatures. Breathable and water repellent High quality for long life Easy to use Machine washable at 30 degrees C Available in two sizes One chest closer, two adjustable leg straps LAMB ADOPTERS & HEADSTOCKS 4 ewe wooden lamb adopter- Constructed from top quality hardwood exterior plywood All fittings are made from galvanised steel Strong and sturdy design with all round access Easy to assemble All parts fit inside the centre box for ease of storage Easy inspection of multiple ewes and lambs FARMCAM Interference free camera system for your farm Safe and efficient farm management! 2 ewe adopters and headstocks are also available to order! RATS AND BAITING Rats and mice seek warm dry conditions when the weather deteriorates outside. Lambing sheds and cattle pens provide the ideal conditions with the added bonus of an easy meal. Now most of your livestock are housed you may notice more pest activity within your sheds. To keep on top of the rat and mouse population on your farm you need to start baiting now. Remember to keep bait topped up and not to move baiting stations too often- rats are very clever animals and will be wary of new objects. It might take a while for rats to start taking bait, especially if there is a lot of animal feed around, but remember just because you re not seeing dead rats laid about doesn t mean your bait is not working. Rats will need to feed over a few days to get sufficient levels of poison in their system to kill them, usually they will feel ill and go to their nest and die. Stronger poisons are available for indoor use only but this must be used with extreme care as it can easily kill your dog or cat even if they eat the host animal. We have a full range of poisons available including whole wheat, wax blocks and pasta bait. Plus baiting stations and traps! Remember we can also supply Aluminium Phosphideplease ask for more details. Please note all credit card payments are now subject to a 2% charge so why not PAY BY BACS! Sort Code & Account no

A valentine gift... A young man wanted to purchase a gift for his girlfriend for Valentine's Day. After careful consideration he decided a good gift would be a pair of gloves. Accompanied by his sister, he went to the store and bought the gloves. His sister purchased a pair of knickers at the same time. The clerk carefully wrapped both items but in the process got them mixed up. The sister was handed the gloves and the young man got the knickers! The young man mailed his Valentine's Day gift with the following note: "Hi darling. I chose this special gift because I noticed you are in the habit of not wearing any when we go out in the evenings. If it had not been for my sister, I would have chosen the ones with buttons, but she prefers short ones that are much easier to remove. "These are a lovely shade, the lady I bought them from showed me the pair she had been wearing for the past three weeks. I had her try yours on for me and they looked quite lovely. I wish I was there to put them on you for the first time; no doubt, other hands will come into contact with them before I have a chance to see you again. I hope you'll wear them Friday night for me. Love, Cuddle Bear! P.s. The sales lady says the latest style is to wear them folded down with just a little fur showing.
