1 LIVESTOCK SHOWSEXHIBITOR NEWSLETTER June NC State Fair Livestock Schedule of Events July 15 - Ownership/Care and possession deadline for Junior Beef Heifers August 1 Entries accepted by the NC State Fair August 11 Last day to tag-in Jr. Market Lambs, Jr. Market Goats, and Jr. Market Barrows September 15 Last day to enter livestock October 11 Jr. Market Lamb Check-In 8am 12pm October 11 Jr. Market Goat Check-In 8am 12pm October 11 Jr. Market Steer/Feeder Calf Check-In 10am 3pm October 11 Jr. Beef Heifer Check-In 1pm 5pm October 13 Jr. Livestock Sale of Champions Jr. Beef Heifer Show to add Percentage Simmental Show at 2018 NC State Fair The Jr. Beef Heifer Department will add a Jr. Percentage Sim- mental Show. Also, regarding the Jr. Beef Heifer Show, please remember an exhibitor is only allowed to show 2 heifers per breed show offered. The All Other Breeds Show is offered only for those registered heifers for which we don t offer a breed show. Entries Accepted Starting Aug 1st Through Sept 15 Starting August 1, exhibitors for the N.C. State Fair may fi ll out their en-tries online at Paper entry forms will also be accepted starting August 1. The last day to enter is September 15.

2 Attention: Dairy Goat Exhibitors Plan to arrive at Vet tent between 10 am- 4 pm, Friday, October 19. No animals will be allowed to enter barns until inspected and passed by health offi cials. You will need to present your veterinarian approval card to the show secretary along with registration papers at designated show check in area. If you want to show, animals must be checked in by show secretary no later than 6:00 pm, Friday, October 19. Please plan accordingly. All entries must comply with both ADGA and NC State Fair rules. It is your responsibility as an exhibitor to read and be familiar with all rules! No exceptions! A. Open Senior doe show and Senior doe division (youth show) i. ADGA Rule...Any doe that has ever freshened or is milked regularly shall compete in a Senior doe show or Senior Doe division (Youth show). This includes dry and precious milkers. ii. ADGA Rule- Any doe 24 months or older that has never freshened shall not be shown unless she is in milk. B. Open Senior doe show and Senior Doe Division (Youth show) i. NC State Fair rule- Any Senior Doe that is ADGA qualifi ed to show in a sanction show can show. ii. NC State Fair no milk, no money rule- Any doe that is not in milk in Open Senior Doe show or Senior Doe Division (Youth show) will not receive any premiums. However, in the Open Senior Doe Show you still must pay a non refundable entry fee. Whether premiums are given or not it is not an ADGA matter and does not affect the show sanction. NC State Fair Livestock Shows Webpage ncstatefair/index.htm Jr. market lamb and jr. market goat tag-in locations and dates will be released later. They occur in July and August. Premise ID Requirements All lambs and goats must have a Scrapies Tag in place for the tag-in. Premise ID codes are required by the NCDA Vet Division. Exhibitors will need to enter this number on their N.C. State Fair entries. The form to apply for a premise ID code is here:

3 Got to Be NC Livestock Tag Program Don t forget to visit the Got to Be NC Livestock Program Webpage for information on how to obtain your tags. nctags.htm Reminder!! The form to apply for a premise id code is here: www. ncagr.gov/ncfarmid/registrationform.htm Rule Change Regarding Veterinary Inspections of Sheep to go into effect at the 2018 NC State Fair: Sheep must have been recently shorn prior to arrival at the NC State Fair to accommodate veterinary inspections. Fleece length shall not exceed 1/4 inch at arrival (exemption provided for breeding sheep shown in fl eece or with fi t- ted fl eece). Animals which are not shorn will not be allowed to stall or enter the check-in line Jr. Market Goat and Jr. Market Lamb Tag-In Dates and Locations All Jr. market lambs and Jr. market goats must be tagged in by August 11th in order to be eligible to be shown at the state fair. Regardless of whether a market animal is tagged by the producer with a Got to Be NC tag or not, the animal must come to a tag-in location for verifi cation. 4 Online Nomination Those N.C. State Fair exhibitors planning on showing Jr. Market Barrows, Jr. Market Lambs and Jr. Market Goats will need to complete the new Online Nomination form by July 1. Please nominate the number of each Jr. Market Lambs/Goats that you anticipate validating/tagging in at a tag in location, or Jr. Market Barrows that will need to be tagged in. Having this informa tion will allow officials to line up visits for tagging and validating Market Barrows more efficiently and to have a better idea of the number of animals to expect at lamb/goat sites. Exhibitors tagging Jr. Market Lambs/Goats AS WELL AS Barrows will be validated at the same time onfarm. ALL JR. MAR KET BARROWS NEED TO BE VALIDATED AND TAGGED BY AUGUST 11. Exhib itors with only Jr. Market Lambs and/or Goats will need to attend one of the validation/tag in stations on or before Aug 11. Completing a nomination form does not enter your animal into the State Fair. Online entry begins August 1. Entries close September 15. 5 Why a Swine Project? - Livestock projects have been proven to teach youth leadership and life skills such as responsibility, discipline, goal-setting, decision making, and confi dence. -Livestock projects are truly a family affair. From selecting animals, feeding, training, grooming, and attending shows, it is a great family project. -The swine family, like every other species is a network of great folks dedicated to the livestock industry in NC. -All pigs offered in this sale are timed for the NC State Fair and will be tagged for the Got to Be NC program. -Pigs are an affordable livestock project. -Pigs take time to train and walk, like any livestock project and you will soon learn their own unique personalities. Learn more about your pig at our clinics before the sale! 11am 11:30am 12pm Before the Pigs Come Home -Facilities: Don t buy pigs until you have a good place to keep them! -Don t need fancy. Economical facilities can be dry lots or pastures. -A small building with a sloping roof will make a good shelter. Should have enclosed sides during fall, winter, and spring. -Air ventilation is important in confinement and shelters. -Pigs don t grow well when too hot or too cold. They like temps 55-70F. Pigs that huddle, pile up or sleep on their stomachs are cold. Pigs that breathe with their mouths open are hot. Provide shade -Prevent pigs from long periods in the sun during the summer, they can get sunburnt or have sunstroke. Pigs will wallow to stay cool and they may need to be sprayed off during hot months. -Have water supply ready to go and feed purchased. -Equipment needed to move and transport, possibly a ramp for trailer Win a Pig! 1st time Jr. State Fair Exhibitors can enter to win 2- $250 credits towards a pig at the sale!
