9 ANIMAL POPULATIONS The relevance of the finding on zoonoe and zoonotic agent ha to be related to the ize and nature of the animal population in the country. Population.. Information on uceptible animal population Source of information SANITEL and BELTRACE databae of the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain. Date the figure relate to and the content of the figure Number of animal = number of animal at a certain time point of the year. Number of laughtered animal = total number of laughtered animal during the year. Definition ued for different type of animal, herd, flock and holding a well a the type covered by the information Holding: any etablihment, contruction or, in the cae of an open-air farm, any place in which animal are held, kept or handled. The location of the holding i baed on the addre and the coordinate of the geographical entity. A geographical entity i a unit of one building or a complex of building included ground and territorie where an animal pecie i or could be hold. Herd: an animal or group of animal kept on a holding a an epidemiological unit; if more than one herd i kept on a holding, each of thee herd hall form a ditinct unit and hall have the ame health tatu. National evaluation of the number of uceptible population and trend in thee figure Over the lat year, there' a continuou decreae in total number of holding of animal pecie. The total number of bovine animal remain unchanged what mean that the mean total number of animal per holding i increaing. The total number of holding and animal of wine, are decreaing over the lat year. Geographical ditribution and ize ditribution of the herd, flock and holding Belgium can be geographically divided into two region: the Flemih region ituated in the north and the Walloon region ituated in the outh of the country. There' a very dene animal population of bovine, wine and poultry in the Flemih region. The Walloon region i important for hi cattle breeding holding of the Belgian Blue White race. The number of porcine and poultry holding in the Walloon region i rather limited. Belgium - 6 3

10 DISEASE STATUS. TUBERCULOSIS, MYCOBACTERIAL DISEASES.. General evaluation of the national ituation... Mycobacterium - general evaluation Hitory of the dieae and/or infection in the country Zoonotic tuberculoi (Mycobacterium bovi). Bovine tuberculoi in human caued by M. bovi i clinically inditinguihable from human tuberculoi caued by M. tuberculoi. In the pat, the mot important way of tranmiion of M. bovi to human wa the conumption of raw milk or raw milk product from infected cattle. Indutrial heating during production method or pateurization of raw milk did top thi way of tranmiion to human. Nowaday tuberculoi in human caued by M. bovi i rare. In region were M. bovi infection in cattle are largely eliminated, only few reidual cae occur among elderly peron a a reult of the reactivation of dormant M. bovi within old leion. Alo among migrant from high-prevalence countrie or region, infection with M. bovi are diagnoed. Agricultural worker may acquire infection by M. bovi by inhaling cough aerool from infected cattle and may ubequently develop typical pulmonary or genito-urinary tuberculoi. Cervical lymphadenopathy, intetinal leion, chronic kin tuberculoi (lupu vulgari) and other non-pulmonary form are alo particularly common a clinical ymptom. Recent action taken to control the zoonoe The urveillance program of tuberculoi i baed on Directive 6/3/EEC, which i implemented and adapted in National legilation ince 963 and lat modified by the Royal Decree of 7 October. The control implie kin teting of animal at the occaion of trade and intenive teting of infected and contact farm in conequence of a confirmation of a bovine TB upiciou cae (tracing-on and tracing-back of all contact animal and contact herd). Sytematic ante- and pot-mortem examination are performed at all laughterhoue. The Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food chain i informed about any doubtful or poitive reult of the kin tet of bovine and may decide to re-examine (additional tet e.g. comparative tuberculin tet, interferon-gamma tet) the animal or to kill them for additional analyi (tet and laughter trategy). In cae a "TB upiciou" leion i detected, a tiue ample i ent to the National Reference Laboratory for analyi. Conequently, if Mycobacterium bovi upicion i confirmed by a poitive culture or PCR, all animal in the herd of origin are kin teted and an epidemiological invetigation i realized. The total herd i conidered a the 'epidemiological unit'. Iolation of M. bovi and biochemical teting i excluively performed in the National Reference Laboratory where alo IFN-gamma, PCR and molecular typing by mean of RFLP, poligotyping or more recently MIRU-VNTR are done to upport the epidemiological invetigation and to eventually prove the link between different cae. Suggetion to the European Union for the action to be taken In cae a holding i infected and if by epidemiological invetigation and tracing-back, animal were found to have been exported to another country, the Chief Veterinary Officer of the country of detination ha to be informed about the outbreak in the country of origin. Thi alert can help to rapidly detect an infection in the concerned holding of detination abroad. Monitoring of the type of train circulating in each country could contribute to the undertanding of the temporal-patial pread of ome pecific train between different countrie and could poibly bear ome epidemiological link between different outbreak. More attention hould be given to intracommunity trade in animal enitive to bovine tuberculoi (e.g. camelid), epecially if thoe animal have tayed for a time in an endemic region of tuberculoi.
