Registered stud breeders are expected to put main emphasis on fundamental structural soundness and good genetics that are relative to succesful commercial lamb production. The following factors, not necessarily listed in order of importance, should be part of the selection criteria:- * Recording system based on both pedigree and performance with emphasis on weight gain, muscling, yield and reasonable leanness. * Fertility with ewes not rearing at least one lamb a year to be culled except in exceptional weather conditions. * Good size and muscling, but of a mature size which provides the most efficient conversion of feed. * An alert but reasonable temperament. * Ease of lambing. * Ability to tolerate or resist internal parasites. * Wedge shape with fine shoulders but overall length. * Ability to breed as hoggets. 206

3 * A good down type fleece free of britch and black spots. Exports - All individual Suffolk sheep, donors of semen and embryos for export are required to be tested clear for the spider gene. Rams offered for Transfer - all rams to be transferred to another stud must be DNA tested clear of the spider gene. TN (Tested Normal) - Denotes a DNA tested clear sheep for the Spider Gene FTN (Flock Tested Normal) - Denotes an entire flock which has been DNA tested for the Spider Gene and all the sheep tested normal TP (Tested Pedigree) - Denotes those sheep bred from DNA Tested Clear parents from a 'Clear Stud'. Inspections : The compulsory inspection of Suffolk ewes before sale is abolished but the buyer or seller has the option of requesting an inspection before sale. Category 1 SUFFOLK APPENDIX SECTION For Suffolk Ewes that registration has not been kept up, but history shows they are from registered stock. Breeders be allowed to bring into their purebred registered flocks purebred unregistered Suffolk rams and ewes with 4 generations of pedigrees and that 2 inspectors be appointed by the Suffolk NZ Breed Committee. Category 2 When ewes or rams of another breed are mated to a Registered Suffolk, those female progeny are recorded as usual, but with a letter C on eartag after individual number. When these C tag ewes are mated to a Registered Suffolk Ram their female progeny tag has the letter B after individual number. The next female generation, when mated to a Registered Suffolk Ram, those female progeny then have the letter A after number. The next female generation when mated to a Registered Suffolk Ram be eligible for full registration in the Flock Book - Rams from this generation will be eligible for Registration. The usual NZSBA rules will apply for all Appendix animals and the recording of those in the Members Flock. The usual fees will also apply as for NZSBA. All Appendix Ewes to be recorded on NZSBA Annual Return. 207
