3 DEFECTS: The above description of a Poll Dorset sheep portrays the ideal for which every breeder should aim. However, in the breeding of Poll Dorsets or any other animal for that matter, certain faults will inevitably appear. To assist members in the breeding of the ideal Poll Dorset and in the elimination of defective qualities, the following are considered defects of major importance. (a) Pigmentation of skin, wool or hooves. (b) Pigmentation of both eyelids. (c) Bareness of eyelids and facial skin. (d) Paper-thin ears. (e) Woolly face. (f) Straight hocks or any physical weakness. (g) Excessive fat on carcase. (h) The intrusion of kemp. (i) Excessive horn growth. Pigmentation of the nostrils, eyelids, skin, wool or hooves is regarded as seriously defective. Black pigmentation of the eyelids is acceptable only when occurring to the extent of the equivalent of one eyelid. If pigmentation occurs to any great extent, the sheep should be rejected. TRANSFER OF EWES: Polled ewes may not be transferred into a Horned flock nor horned ewes into a Polled flock. Category 1: APPENDIX FLOCKS i. Objective: To allow for the inclusion of unregistered Purebred Poll Dorset ewes in the Flock Book. ii Rules: For Poll Dorset ewes where registration has not been maintained but perusal of records shows that registered rams have been used over Purebred ewes. The progeny from these ewes will be eligible for inclusion in the Flock Book. Subject to inspection. Category 2: i. Objective: To allow for the inclusion of desirable characteristics from other breeds into the Poll Dorset breed. 289

4 ii. Rules: Sheep to be considered eligible for registration must have a recorded history of three generations and have a pedigree which comprises greater than 87.5% registered Poll Dorset blood. Sheep phenotype must conform to the Poll Dorset breed description as outlined in the latest Flock Book. Sheep to be registered must be inspected. Pedigrees from all sheep must be made available if requested. All requests for registration must be made in writing and the Breed Committee retains the right to veto any application. Until these sheep reach full Purebred and registered status they are to be recorded in an appendix flock under the owner s registered flock number. Appendix flocks are subject to the same rules and regulations as registered flocks but do not attract an additional vote if the member already has a registered flock. Only white faced, white woolled breeds are permissible and to be from registered flock. If Texels are used, the original sheep must be DNA test clear of Microphthalmia. The usual fees will also apply as for NZSBA. All Appendix Ewes to be recorded on NZSBA Annual Return.
