1 November/December 2008 Serving Chicago, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Eastern Iowa Website: Editor: Angela Mertens 4109 Springbrook Court Pleasant Prairie, WI (262) President s Column Cissy Sullivan Hi Newf Friends, When trying to decide on just one subject for this month s newsletter, I kept stumbling over the need to address several things. After reviewing them I realized that they all had a common thread or theme of IN APPRECIATION. So here goes. Most of the time people do not expect this, often they even state that it is not necessary, BUT, something that takes so little, means so much. One or possibly two words THANKS or THANK YOU are easy enough to say but many times passed by. For NCNC we seized the moment at the Water Test Banquet to publicly recognize and thank the members who have provided us water practice sites. Through their hard work and efforts we the NCNC members have been blessed with three unique areas. What a more fitting time to express our thanks to Mike Reese, Joan Gunn, Les and Jean Morris, and Kathy and Dr. Steve Van Wie. A Joan Gunn token of our appreciation was given to them on behalf of the club. There will never be enough THANK YOUs for their generosity. While looking over the enormous amount of photographs I have of NCNC events I continually came across a set of familiar faces. This couple is always on hand lending support, expertise and guidance to all. My next THANK YOU goes out to NCNC Founding members Bob and Jean Quandt. Your years of dedication, passion, and love for our club and breed are Les Morris next to none. Other clubs would be so lucky to have both of you. As one of our local news reporters says, They are SOMEONE you should know! My last thought of thanks is focused on our two most recent events and their chairs. Roger Danielsen and Linda Larsen chaired our water and draft tests for the 2008 year. Their hard work coupled with the hard work of their test secretaries, Tara Martin and Darlene Rattner kept things running smoothly and successfully. 4 page 4 Newf News November/December 2008 President s Column (continued) would not have been possible if not for the VOLUNTEERS who gave so generously of their time and of themselves. Reflecting on both events I realized the increased amount of members, family, friends and spectators we are now having come to our activities. Anyone who attended our water test with the wrath of IKE beating down on us was surely a die hard, dedicated Newfoundland lover! Our draft test had much better weather, but had its own problem... BEES and ASIAN BEETLES! Once again the turn out was fantastic. Both events were attended by a great mix of people. Looking around you could find long standing members, new members, prospective Jean & Bob Quandt owners/members, board members, family and friends. Each of the attendees brought great positive wishes and support to all. To the long standing members: Your continued passion, and dedication is so appreciated and admired. To the new members: You have come out so strong and willing to step up, you are a gift to our club, dedicated and engaged. With both of these types of members we can surely look forward to great things for our club. How very exciting to have this wonderful blend. I like to call it the COMBO PLATTER!! No matter how long you have been loving or attached to the Newfoundland Breed there is always a learning experience waiting to happen if you are open to interacting with such a diverse grouping. Thanks to all of you for bringing this unique blend together. FYI photo by Ted Meeker Roger Danielsen Switching gears I wanted to share some information given to me by member Tara Bertrand. Tara reports that McHenry County College offers a class in First Aid for Canines. This class spans the topics of CPR, bandaging in emergency situations and countless other subjects. I wonder if this concept might be of interest for a future seminar. We are always looking for new ideas/suggestions for workshops. Please feel free to list any of your ideas on your membership renewal form (We hope that you have already renewed!!) If that has already been completed do not hesitate to Linda Larsen me at blackpawsx12@dls.net with your thoughts in regards to this or any other suggestion. I will be happy to share your ideas with our board. Assessing the continued broadening needs of our club in regards to equipment, the board has put into motion the purchase of ring gates instead of renting them each time, along with a trailer to accommodate and store all the essentials needed for club events. Steve Van Wie Don t forget our next event EDUCATION DAY November 16th. Melissa Torres is chairing this and has details within this newsletter as well as on the website. Hope to see you there. DONATIONS NEEDED Hi Everyone, We have a VERY UNIQUE basket idea already in progress for our donation to the 2009 National Specialty. We are looking for donations that any NEWFOUNDLAND and their owner could use in a variety of ways. We would LOVE to carry forth this theme and fill our basket with items that are used in water work, draft, obedience, conformation, tracking, rally, lounging, best companion, and so on. I would like to suggest Newfie related stationary, BOOKS, stuffies, special treats, statues, T-shirts, knick knacks, collars, bibs, leashes, decorations, gift certificates to dog specific catalogs, grooming supplies etc. This basket will surely be something that every NCNC member will be proud to say, That s from my club. I already have two members; Dona Baker who has generously offered some water equipment, and Tara Bertrand who also has generously offered breed specific books. Please consider helping us out. I thank you in advance. If there is anything specific that you could donate, please me at: blackpawsx12@dls.net with your item. I will keep a list of what has been offered and update on our website. Donations will be accepted anytime between now and our deadline February 27th and 28th during our Regional Specialty. I will take a photo of our CONTAINER/BASKET and post it in our next newsletter for anyone who will not be able to make the Michigan National Specialty to see our final product. Your help is greatly appreciated, Cissy

6 page 6 Newf News November/December Regional Specialty February 27th & 28th, 2009 Our next back-to-back Regional Specialty is taking place on Friday, February 27 and Saturday, February 28. This year we are moving to the Washington County Fair Park in West Bend, Wisconsin. It's located just off the Interstate about 15 minutes north of downtown Milwaukee. Rooms for NCNC members have been set aside at the Holiday Inn Express in Germantown, Wisconsin. There are several other dog friendly hotels in the area. A banquet is planned for Friday evening at the Riverside Brewery in West Bend. This banquet is a great opportunity to catch up with friends, celebrate the day and bid on great Newfy items. Committee members are working hard to make sure this is another memorable event. Linda Larsen, our trophy chair, has mailed out a request for trophy donations. Members have been so generous in the past, that all our trophies have been covered. Please help us out again. Drop her a line or give her a call and let her know you are willing to donate a trophy again this year. It is a great way to help support this event. Volunteers are still needed. Most jobs require little or no previous experience. Our obedience and rally chair is Melissa Torres who is also looking for volunteers to act as stewards. Please contact her if you can help. On Friday our Breed judge is George Heitzman, Obedience and Rally, Fred Buroff and Sweeps judge Sharon C. Smith. Saturday s Breed judge is Jens Utke Ramsing of Denmark, Obedience and Rally, Lynn Tamms and Sweepstakes judge Eleanor Jackson. Our Show Secretary, Mark Milligan, will be putting the premium together in early December. He will be ing premiums to everyone. We are working on a system to make sure that s get through to members and to send through the mail premiums to members who wish to receive it this way. Information on the show and the premium, when it is available, will be on our website at Please be sure to mark your calendars for this great event. It is Newfy heaven! Joan Gunn, Show Chair A general membership meeting will be held in conjunction with EDUCATION DAY Sunday November 16th at the Western Waukesha County Dog Training Facility, Ixonia WI. During this meeting (if a quorum is achieved) there will be discussion and possible vote on the new BY-LAW recommendations. A flyer was sent out with the by-law information to all members in September. These items are very important to EVERYONE in our club. Please consider attending Ed Day to partake in the great information presented by Melissa Torres in regards to Draft work, then join in the pot luck lunch and meeting. Hope to see you there. 8 page 8 Newf News November/December 2008 Report of the Water Test Chairperson North Central Newfoundland Club Water Test September 13 and 14, 2008 NCNC s Water Test Party Time 2008 The NCNC Water Test was scheduled to start with basic obedience on the afternoon of September 13, Unfortunately Hurricane Ike had other ideas. At first it seemed possible that one of our judges might not be able to fly in at all, but the weather cooperated enough to get both of them into O Hare Airport in Chicago. Getting them out of the airport was another matter. The roads surrounding the airport were closed because of flooding, as was the subway. Eventually, the flooding subsided, allowing us to pick up our judges and transport them to the test site. However, since their arrival was in doubt, entrants had left, and we were unable to hold basic control that day. The judges made the final call, that with the few entrants left, basic control would be held the following morning. Sunday morning arrived with continuing torrential rain courtesy of Hurricane Ike, thus replicating realistic water rescue conditions. However, the test began on time with Basic Control and proceeded from there. Both the junior exercises and the senior exercises were completed by the early afternoon. Despite the rain, wind and cold, many participants and observers remained on to cheer on others. The stewards, entrants and other volunteers all performed admirably, especially given the weather conditions. The Newfs, on the other hand, didn t give the weather a second thought. Of 14 entrants who tested (11 junior, 3 senior), there were 3 junior qualifiers and 1 senior qualifier. A huge thank you to the judges, Ron Horn and Matt Cobban, all the stewards and volunteers, as well as the entrants and observers who all braved the storm to carry out a successful water test.
