1 May/June 2006 Newf News Serving Chicago, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Eastern Iowa Website: Editor: Angela Mertens 4109 Springbrook Ct Pleasant Prairie, WI (262) President s Column Rick Hartke Congratulations to all North Central Newfoundland Club members who made the trek to the National as a participant or a spectator. Many of our club members did well. Just making the cut at the National is a heady experience and there are those that won their classes and even won High in Trial for Obedience two consecutive days. (Read who they are in the Show & Tell section.) If this was your first national, I hope you enjoyed it! If you handled your own dog, congratulations no matter the placements. It takes a lot of intestinal fortitude for an owner-handler to perform in this venue. That is why so many of us decide that while we may train our dogs in conformation, at the big shows a professional handler can be an excellent choice as well. Two events are planned for June. The water workshop June 10th and 11th in Harvard and the Annual Picnic which is June 25th. The water workshop is great way for first timers to learn the basics and grasp an understanding of what is involved to have your best friend become a Water Dog, Water Rescue Dog, or a Water Dog Rescue Excellent. Experienced water workers should be able to pick up some training tips also. Hopefully it will show you the natural instincts of your Newf and give you further motivation to get into the water and begin working your Newf. You don't have to wait until the workshop though. Start reading the regulations on do a search on Google for "water rescue + Newfoundland" and you'll be amazed how many stories are out there. Most of the exercises involve taking a rope/bumper or retrieving an article, so start with simple "take, hold, give" commands of any object. A game of fetch with the commands "find it" and "bring it" to you will get you started on the basics on land without needing water! The picnic will be held at Chain O' Lakes State Park in Spring Grove, IL. Last year, the picnic was held in Wisconsin. We plan to alternate picnic sites between Illinois and Wisconsin. If you can, please volunteer to help Maggie. There are always lots of tasks for a successful event and helping hands are always appreciated. This is a fun event for all club members as we get to bring our Newfs, chat with friends, enjoy some fun activities and celebrate accomplishments from last year. Directions to the picnic site as well as awards information can be found in this newsletter. There will also be a general membership meeting and annual election of board members and officers. If you have any agenda items for the membership meeting you would like to discuss, please let me or another board member know. Cindy Dasbach, Erin Schanen and Jill Verhunce will be the co-chairpersons for Education Day on December 3rd. Thank you for volunteering! It is wonderful to have fresh talent working on activities in the club. Events for the day are still being finalized although the current site being looked at is north of Milwaukee, WI. Please mark this future event on your calendar and support these club members who have volunteered. One other suggested event is a New Members only day. Since we have such a broad range of knowledge in our membership, new members may feel shy in asking questions or coming to events they may not know enough about. This would be an opportunity for first time Newf owners and new members to understand what our beautiful dogs can do. So newcomers, their dogs and a handful of experienced club members Continued on page 5

5 Newf News May/June 2006 page 5 Water, Water, Water It's spring and time to think about getting out your water work equipment and getting in the water again. Water training will begin the first week in June. We will be training on Monday mornings beginning at 9:30 am and on Wednesdays at 3:00 pm at the Gunn/Reese pond in Harvard, Illinois. Please call to check times and dates for times at Les Morris in Antioch, Illinois. Sunday, June 4 we will swim in the morning and clean the pond in preparation for the water seminar the following weekend. Helpers with and without rakes are welcome. There is still time to enroll in the Water Seminar with Roger and Barbara Frey scheduled for June in Harvard, Illinois. Information on the event is included in this newsletter. Don't delay, send you form in today. Places to work in the water are hard to find in the Midwest. If members are aware of water sites available to dogs and handlers please let us know. In the meantime, see you on the beach! Water Test The Working Dog Committee has just approved our 2006 Water Test. This years test will again be at Prairie Springs Park, Lake Andrea, Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. Judges this year are Sue Marino and Sam Butler. This year's test committee is Joan Gunn, Chair; Mary Trauernicht, Secretary and Roger Danielsen, Chief Steward. Many thanks to Linda Larsen our outgoing water test secretary who has taken on additional responsibility with the Board of Directors. Water tests are a lot of fun and all are welcome to attend and cheer on their friends. President s Column (con t) would get together and cover the basics of grooming, obedience, drafting, water work, showing your dog in conformation and lots of Q and A. Hopefully this would encourage everyone to attend more club events and feel comfortable no matter the subject at hand. If you are a new member, we would like to hear if this is something you would be interested in so let your board members or me know what you think of this idea, please. Spring is a beautiful time to start an exercise program with your Newf, if you haven't already. Early morning or late evening is good time to walk your boy or girl or your pack. If you and your Newfie aren't into shape, start with a short walk and gradually go farther. Build up their stamina as well as yours. An adult Newfoundland should be able to walk a mile to two miles or more daily fairly easily. At least a mile in the morning and at night. While most of our Newfs would prefer to sleep eight hours or more a day, they do need exercise and stimulation. Newfoundlands are Working Dogs and they excel at it. Giving them a chore and keeping them exercised will reap their own rewards in a more contented and calm dog. They do need to perform work for us, even if that's found in the companionship of a walk together. There are a couple of reminders, too. This is the last call for anyone wishing to be involved in the updating of the Bylaws. If you are interested please contact me by May 31st. (If you've already stated your interest to me, I have your name.) Also, the deadline for membership renewal was March 15th. If you have a question about your membership, please contact Mary Trauernicht. As always volunteers and suggestions are welcome. Please feel free to contact any board member. It takes many people to host some of our events. Those club members who volunteer their time work hard to have an enjoyable event. Their efforts are appreciated. Enjoy the spring and summer and hope to see you at our activities in June. Enjoy quality time spent with your best friend. Until next time, Rick
