1 September/October 2010 Serving Chicago, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Eastern Iowa Website: Editor: Angela Mertens 4109 Springbrook Ct Pleasant Prairie, WI (262) President s Column Cissy Sullivan Happy Fall Season to you all. I personally would not have believed that this season was upon us when participating in our last NCNC event, the Draft test! The temps touched 80 degrees with sunny skies by the afternoon. I wondered where all that warm sunny weather was during our Water Test!! Both events were very successful regardless of the weather conditions. Even the best executed, organized plans by committees only have so much control over Mother Nature. We won t have to worry about that when looking forward to our Ed Day and General Membership meeting being held Sunday, November 22nd in Highland Park. The line up of speakers and displays shows great promise of being a wonderful opportunity for gaining new information in regards to medical issues and emergency situations with our dogs, as well as a SHOW and TELL shared about Newfoundland collectibles and memorabilia. Ted Meeker has been working to put all this together for all our benefits. I am hoping that all of you will be able to join Ted and us for a great day. More details and specifics are published within this newsletter. For our Someone You Should Know section of this newsletter, you all probably know part of the highlighted team but not all. I was contacted by with an inquiry about doing therapy visits. I carefully asked questions regarding limitations, and restrictions mostly concerned about the facility and their demands or concerns. I soon found out that this inquiry was for a visit to a private home with NO restrictions or limitations. I considered my two furkids who both have their CGC and TDI certifications. Rainbo, who has a wonderful sweet loving disposition would have been great, but is not confident with certain surfaces underfoot. Owen with his ortho limitations would not be a choice. I then thought of a team that could fill this request, a team that had worked and shown success in all areas necessary to earn a VN title, a team that have done some visitations but not on a formal basis. So I called on Macy. Macy owns Dona Baker and when asking if they would consider doing a home visit, Macy and Dona were pleased to help. Macy's easy, consistent and steady disposition makes for a great fit in being a GOOD WILL AMBASSADOR. I corresponded back and forth with Susan Angell who was setting this up for her 96 year old father, Charles. Mr. Angell has made it clear that the Newfoundland breed is his breed of choice and has always been throughout his life, having owned three Newfs. Susan stated that her father had not had the pleasure of being around a Newfoundland for some years now, and if this could take place what a treat it would be. Continued Page 9

Combine the molasses, honey, water, and oil in a medium bowl. In another large bowl mix the flour, the baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Combine well. Divide this dough in four sections and roll each piece into a ball, wrap each ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3 5 hours. After the dough is well-chilled Put dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll dough out into 1/4" thickness. Cut dough with a cookie cutter into gingerbread men or other fun shapes. We re considering hosting a CHIC DNA collection clinic and are looking for someone or a group of people who are willing to spearhead that portion. The DNA collected is for future research initiatives. Only 5-10 cc s of blood is needed from ALL NEWFS: show dogs, pet dogs, healthy dogs, and sick dogs; which will provide enough DNA for hundreds of health studies. This clinic will give a quick and easy opportunity for anyone in attendance to have their dogs DNA collected. If you re interested in helping with this or any part of Newfiepalooza, please contact Rhonda or Karen for more information. 7 Newf News November/December page 7 Dear members, Several months ago a club member, concerned over proposed federal legislation, asked the board if NCNC was a member of the Illinois Federation of Dog Clubs and Owners. We were not, but told the member we would look into it. Since our club territory encompasses IL, WI and IA, other federations were explored as well. Joining any of the federations as a club was pricey, but membership for individuals is very reasonable. Since pet legislation that will negatively impact your right to own and/or breed is being enacted all across the country, the board felt that even though we as a club could not join, we would like to present the information to the membership for those who may wish to become involved. Any opinion stated below is solely that of the author and does not necessarily reflect the views of the board, it s individual members or NCNC. Respectfully, Kathy Van Wie What are state dog federations? Dog federations are generally non profit organizations that promote responsible dog ownership, monitor legislation and inform it s members of pending legislation. They try to ensure that any legislation enacted will not negatively impact pet owners and responsible breeders in their respective states. The following is a mission statement from Illinois Dog Federation Clubs and Owners Mission Statement IFDCO's mission is to provide information and education to kennel clubs in Illinois and their members, dog owners, rescue community, and elected officials so that legislation and regulation will promote the health and well-being, appropriate care of all dogs, protect the rights and responsibilities of dog owners and breeders, and support responsible dog ownership. Below is a list of federations for the states within NCNC s territory as well as the surrounding states that some of our members reside within. Illinois Dog Federation Clubs and Owners: Membership: Individual A - Non Voting $25.00 Illinois Dog Clubs and Breeders Association: Membership: Individual - $45.00 Dog Federation of Wisconsin: Membership: Individual non-voting $15.00, Individual voting $25.00 Indiana Purebred Dog Alliance: Membership: Individual $25.00, Household $40.00 Michigan Association for Purebred Dogs:: Membership: Individual $15.00, Couple $25.00 Iowa Alliance For Responsible Dog Ownership: (cannot find a working link) Much of the pending and proposed legislation such as mandatory spay/neuter, breed bans, dog limit laws and unreasonable/expensive requirements and restrictions placed on *all* breeders, is a very real threat to your right to own a pet and a breeder s right to breed quality animals, which in turn greatly impacts your ability to purchase a quality pet. Much of the legislation will even impact rescue organizations. Here are just a few quotes from the Presidents of the two largest animal rights organizations. These organizations are very much behind and/or support most of the legislation being proposed. Wayne Pacelle, President of the Humane Society of the United States We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding...one

8 page 8 Newf News November/December 2010 generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective Animal People News, May 1993 We are going to use the ballot box and the democratic process to stop all hunting in the United States... We will take it species by species until all hunting is stopped in California. Then we will take it state by state. Full Cry magazine, Oct 1990 While Wayne s second quote relates to hunting, this same approach is being used by HSUS to promote anti-breeding legislation across the country. Ingrid Newkirk, President of People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals The bottom line is that people don't have the right to manipulate or to breed dogs and cats... If people want toys, they should buy inanimate objects. If they want companionship, they should seek it with their own kind. Animals, May 1993 In the end, I think it would be lovely if we stopped this whole notion of pets altogether. Newsday, Feb 1988 There is no hidden agenda. If anybody wonders about -- what s this with all these reforms -- you can hear us clearly. Our goal is total animal liberation. [emphasis added] Animal Rights 2002 convention, Jun 2002 I don t use the word 'pet.' I think it s speciesist language. I prefer 'companion animal.' For one thing, we would no longer allow breeding. community could not create different breeds. There would be no pet shops. If people had companion animals in their homes, those animals would have to be refugees from the animal shelters and the streets. You would have a protective relationship with them just as you would with an orphaned child. But as the surplus of cats and dogs (artificially engineered by centuries of forced breeding) declined, eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship enjoyment at a distance. The Harper's Forum Book, Jack Hitt, ed., 1989, p.223 How can you protect your right to own animals? Know the difference between animal welfare and animal rights groups. Animal welfare groups are working to see that all animals are treated humanely with proper housing, nutrition, health care, exercise and humane euthanasia as necessary. Terminology generally used by these groups is owner and pet. Animal rights groups seek to abolish the use of animals for food, clothing, hunting, breeding, medical research, entertainment, guide dogs, assistance dogs and to see that all ownership of animals comes to an end. Common terminology used is guardian vs. owner and companion animal vs. pet. Become aware of proposed and pending legislation that seeks to impact pet ownership at both the federal and local levels. AKC legislative alerts: Become involved. Use the links above to monitor pending national and local legislation in your home state. Write to your federal/state legislators and oppose legislation that would infringe upon your right to own a pet. Each of the state links above provide easy access to their various legislators, some even offer a sample letter to streamline the process. If so inclined, join your state s federation. Individual memberships are very reasonable. Membership information is available on the websites. The subject of pet legislation is huge and volumes could be written. Kathy & Steve Van Wie Bearscamp s Kentucky Ruffian Brando June 11, 2001 October 19, 2010 To my sweet boy - you were the best friend a person could ask for and I miss you more than words can express... You are forever in my heart Karen Clancy New Member Application Todd & Amy Nathan 2155 Scotch Pine Lane, Northbrook, IL Associate member Sponsors: Linda Larson and Karen Clancy Mr. Angell is a retired Lt. Col. and business owner. He came to own his President s Column (continued) first Newf while still in the service. Ranger entered the Angell's life quite by accident. Ranger was roaming loose in Colorado while the family was passing through and when the Angell's went to return him to the owner they asked to adopt him and that s when the LOVE AFFAIR with Newfoundland s began. After that the Angell's would have two more Newfoundlands, Joe and Rufus coming from a kennel here in Illinois. Our visit was a great one, filled with wonderful conversation and reminiscing. I brought lots of enlarged photos to share. Mr. Angell was interested in seeing a Landseer (he said he had only seen one before) and did not know that Brown and Gray were also acceptable colors within the Newfoundland standard. Mr. Angell had a treasured newspaper article that sits on a table next to his chair. He wished to share it with us. It was an article from 2004 with a picture of a Newfoundland dog sitting on the back of a boat with its owner rowing. The article does NOT get put away and is looked at everyday. It was Bruce Karger from PA. Mr. Angell was delighted that we knew Bruce and said what a small world this is. Macy was the epitome of a Gentle Giant. She was very cautious of Mr. Angell s feet and would go just close enough to touch them but not stand or sit on them. There was lots of petting and even a visit from Susan s small dog as well. The hour visit in Glencoe was a HAPPY one, and seemed to fly past. Before we left, Mr. Angell made sure we had exchanged names and numbers and that a return visit might be set up. Our return visit is being planned and we will be bringing a container of past Newf Tides to give to Mr. Angell courtesy of Mary L. Price. Thank you Macy, Dona, Mr. Angell, Susan and Gina (House and Caretaker) for allowing this to happen, and for the opportunity to show another WONDERFUL facet of our beloved breed. These are all the SOMEONES you should know. Newfoundly, Cissy Sullivan
