Serving Chicago, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Eastern Iowa Website: July August 2013 Editor: Angela Mertens, 4109 Springbrook Ct, Pleasant Prairie, WI (262) President s Column Cathy Hartke And a happy summer to you! Some days it feels like August and others it feels like April. Welcome to the Midwest, right? However, those hot days make great opportunities for What s Inside President s Column 1 Show & Tell 2 Senior Birthdays 3 Lotta Love Bakery 3 Splash & Play Day 4 Water Practice Sites 6 Water Test 7 Newf Finder 8 Annual Picnic 9 Newfiepalooza 10 Draft Test 10 Memorial 11 New Member Applications 11 Calendar 12 dogs and humans alike to play in the water. Tara Bertrand and I got a chance to do just that with about 10 club members on the 29th at the inaugural Splash & Play Day at the Pleasant Prairie site. We had mostly puppies from five months to a year that had never been in the water to swim - to wade maybe - but swimming was a new experience. It was so much fun to see the pups as they started swimming farther and farther. Of course a little inducement (hot dogs) and lots of goo-goo talk (what we call silly baby talk in our house) helped them feel comfortable and willing to try. We put life vests or skier belly bands on all of them. I think this is a great way to get a dog of any age into the water and avoid the panicked feeling when their legs stop touching the bottom. We ve all seen dogs flounder and slap at the water with their front paws. Starting with a flotation device keeps them level while facilitating use of all four legs to propel themselves in the water. It also gives them confidence right off the bat! Water work should be fun for humans and Newfs alike so we didn t try any fancy stuff just had fun and introduced several new members and their babies to having a good time in the water. The temp had dropped to around 70 degrees after a sunshine-filled hot week, of course. However the rain held off and the dogs didn t mind the temperature at all. In fact most of them wanted to come back in after being out for a rest. As I mentioned at the picnic, we can swim at Lake Andrea during their regular summer hours as long as the lake is not closed for a private event. The lake was quite muddy where we swam we had two people lose a shoe to the muck! Hint: invest in shoes that will stay on your feet with ties or buckles with- Continued on Page 5

Newf News July/August 2013 page 5 President s Column (continued) out pulling off. The dog swimming area is past the ball fields and next to the boat launch on the far northeast corner. Our insurance covers club members as long as you have the proper equipment (life vests and water shoes for people are mandatory). We also must be responsible owners and pick up after our dogs and ourselves be sure to carry poop bags with you and dispose of properly (there are recycling containers and regular garbage bins within a few feet of the water). Let s not lose this rare privilege of an open swimming spot for the club. The general consensus was that everyone wanted to do this again. Pencil in July 21st for our next play date. Remember young or old - owners and Newfs of all ages - are welcome as well as experienced water wizard members as knowledgeable helpers. All you need is a desire to have fun in the sun and water! Speaking of the picnic, we had a beautiful location again this year with lots of shelter and room. Each year John Mertens finds these delightful sites for us and we appreciate all the hard work he and Angela put forth to make our day so special. While it started off raining, eventually the sun came out and some Newf puppies even played in the mud puddles. The turnout was strong and we held our annual election welcoming Amy Corvillion to the board while thanking Woody for his help over the past two years. In addition, the board received Barbara Hearn s resignation effective June 30 because of her relocation. Barbara has been an active member of NCNC for many years and we will miss her contributions and knowledge. Barbara s unfilled term on the board runs for another year and the board will appoint a director to serve out the balance of the term at our next board meeting. Please let me (or anyone else on the board) know if you are interested in this position. The summer months are hectic so other than the picnic and water practice (and play), we try not to have any scheduled events. As a reminder, the NCNC two-day water test is coming up in September and Chief Steward Cissy Sullivan needs volunteers to help steward both days. Many stewarding jobs are simple taking the leash, handing it back, handing the next piece of equipment to the entrant, pushing the boat away from shore, etc. Stewarding doesn t take any special knowledge so if you want to learn more about our events and meet more of your fellow club members, volunteering is a great way to get a birds-eye view. We will also hold a short membership meeting at the Saturday night pizza party after day one of the water test. Please plan on coming and letting the committee know if you can be there and help. Enjoy the summer, keep your Newfs cool and have a great time! Newfoundly, Cathy
page 6 Newf News July/August 2013 Calling All Water Rescue Training Enthusiasts! The YMCA Camp Shioc pond is open for water rescue practice! We are training on the weekends from 10 am -?? and weekday evenings after 3:30 pm. Because the YMCA occasionally has extracurricular events planned, please call or us at least a few days in advance of the day(s) you'd like to train to make sure the pond is available for training on those dates. Kathy & Steve Van Wie or moonsailnewf@new.rr.com Looking forward to a great training season and a lot of new titles! Training on Channel Lake The training site is at the home of Les and Jean Morris, W Spring Grove Rd., Antioch. IL (Cell phone ) We are located a block off IL route 173 about 2 miles west of Antioch. The cross street is Maple and goes through the Antioch Moose Club parking lot. At Spring Grove Rd, turn left and then park on grass, nosing into the fence. Please don't park in front of the large gate or the 2 car garage for safety reasons. The beach is "terrible" because it is a rip rap stone seawall with steps into the lake, so please step carefully. Channel Lake is a public lake with numerous distractions to help condition your dog to learn to ignore such as: rocks, birds, fish, power boats, fishing boats, water skiers and jet skiers. The training area is 100 feet wide and the bottom slopes out gently with a sandy bottom out about 30 feet and then "muck" and weeds. There is a pier and small boat lift which divides the area into 2 parts so several training exercises can be done at the same time. The row boat used for some of the exercises is 14 feet long with a large carpeted platform on the stern for the dogs and handlers. There are several dog tie out rings in a retaining wall so you can help others in their efforts. Six foot cables are available rather than trying to thread your own leads through the retaining rings. We do allow some equipment storage in the boathouse for those who train regularly. Just as the rules state, water shoes and life jackets are required, as well as the rest of the equipment needed. Training usually starts with the WD exercises, then WRD and WRDX. The order of the exercises is determined by those practicing. Everyone acts as stewards (victims) for each other. Over time, we have found out that you can rework and do an exercise about 3 times before the dog loses interest. And if the dog knows the exercise, we do it only once to prevent boredom. Training time lasts as long as needed to allow everyone time to do what they need to do. (Or the light fails.) After training is over, some wash their dogs. A dog wash tub with cold water and dryer are available on a first come, first washed basis. Handlers will have to supply their own shampoo, ear rinse and towels. Training times for 2013, as established by consensus, are Sunday mornings starting around 9 am and Friday evenings starting about 6 pm. Only thunderstorm activity will curtail practices. Too hot or cold or flooding conditions do not prevent practices.

page 8 Newf News July/August 2013 Newf Finder A neighbor became concerned about Midget, a senior Newf, when there seemed to be no activity at the house near Racine, WI. The neighbor contacted the owner who returned daily to care for her. The owner was willing to surrender Midget to NCNC Rescue and the neighbor intervened. Arrangements were made to transfer Midget to NCNC Rescue. Cissy Sullivan volunteered to expedite the transfer by transporting Midget to her new home with Donna Stahelin. Newf Finder 1 NCNC Rescue as of June 13, 2013 Currently, Clark is 20 month old, a neutered male, near Kankakee. His owners are consulting the breeder for possible return. Bear and Ben are 6 and 7 years old and might need new homes soon due to their owners illnesses. They are currently in Downers Grove. During the past year, twenty-nine Newfoundlands were assisted by NCNC Rescue. Nine Newfs were surrendered to NCNC Rescue with foster care, transport and other assistance provided by Ellen Joyce, Gerlanda van de Maat, Karen Britton, Cissy Sullivan and Mary L. Price. Donations from many NCNC members and the Animal Hospital of Woodstock, and a grant from NCA Rescue supported veterinary care for these Newfs. Sixteen Newfoundlands were placed directly into new homes referred from NCNC Rescue s waiting list. Unfortunately four Newfoundland owners were advised to euthanize due to biting. Descriptions of the circumstances concerning each Newfoundland assisted by NCNC Rescue were published in Newf News and quarterly reports were presented to the NCNC Board of Directors. Karen Clancy posted information about available Newfs on NCNC s website. Copies of the NCNC Rescue Fund bank statements are sent to the president and treasurer monthly. Appropriate foster care is very limited but always needed. Please send your referrals to me for more information about NCNC Rescue. Potential adopters are always needed. Foster care is also needed. Please contact me if you can help Newfoundlands in our region. Mary L. Price, , mlprice@mhtc.net
Newf News July/August 2013 page 9 Picnic Time 2013 Annual Picnic General Membership Meeting, Awards & Election of Officers June 15th, 2013 The day started out cool and raining, but quickly cleared up so we had a beautiful day for a picnic. The large shelter kept us dry until the rain stopped and everyone enjoyed great conversation under the roof (and with a big pot of coffee). We easily meet the quorum and had many prospective members join us for the day. Russ did an excellent job cooking the chicken breasts and hamburgers, even after being hampered by me forgetting to start the coals on time. We had one of the best selections of side dishes ever and no one should have been hungry at the end of the day. We made a quick shift on some of the games so everyone would stay dry and avoid slipping (or getting shoved by a Newf) on the wet grass. Maredith Reggie was a great judge and brought laughter to the event. Thank you to everyone who brought items for the brown bag raffle. Everyone was sure to find items that they had to try to win for their home. Finally, thank you to everyone who attended and a special thank you to everyone who stayed and helped clean up at the end. John Mertens
