January/February 2012 Serving Chicago, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Eastern Iowa Website: Editor: Angela Mertens 4109 Springbrook Ct Pleasant Prairie, WI (262) President s Column Cathy Hartke Greetings and happy 2012! With the wind chill finally around zero as I write this, it s starting to feel like winter at last. Up until now, it s felt more like spring especially with all the mud our Newfs have been bringing in. I m not asking for a tough winter but it sure would be nice if the ground would finally freeze and stay that way for a while. I hope your holidays in November and December were happy, healthy and restful as we start off a new year packed with fun occasions scheduled for NCNC members. The board met in early December to firm up our calendar of events for the new year. With the exception of a few openings, we put committee chairs in place, along with dates and locations (listed below). The major events of the year include the water test, draft test, regional specialty, education day, annual picnic, nominating committee, rescue, and Newfiepalooza. We have secured sites for most of these. If you are interested on serving on any of the committees, please contact the chair. If you are interested in chairing an event that is open, please let me know. Don t be shy about volunteering; there are plenty of skilled and unskilled jobs to go around so no worries about lack of experience. Besides, the only way we get experience is to offer to help out and learn more! We really would like to see additional involvement from new and existing club members not just the ones who tirelessly give of their time and energy every year. We were all newbies once and found friendship, common interests, and good times while learning more about our beloved breed. Continued on Page 11 We also set dates for four board meetings this year on January 12, April 12, July 10 and photos by Cissy Sullivan

page 4 Newf News January/February 2012 On Sunday November 13, 2011 NCNC S Ed Day event was held at Happy Tails Ranch 4319 Roberts Education Day Rd. Island Lake, Illinois. Our day began at 9:00 a.m. with an Obedience Seminar presented by Dawn Parison. Dawn along with Dave and Zap (demo dog extraordinaire) instructed our seven participants with lots of positive reinforcement, wonderful tips and advice. Sonia Klein was the winner of the special door prize for the participants of this seminar. Her new ring bag was filled with training treats, two training books, a bait pouch, leash and a collar. Each participant was given a great resource packet compliments of Dawn and Dave. Our deepest appreciation to Dawn and Dave for their time and extra efforts in providing a seminar that many will benefit from in the future. Lunch and the General membership meeting followed at 11:50 a.m. The second half of our day began at 12:20 p.m. with Basic Grooming Techniques offered by Dona Baker. Each participant had a 1/1 spotter who helped each owner follow through the techniques Dona was teaching. Spectators were welcome to get up close and personal to watch as well. Dona kindly created a packet filled with resources for supplies, equipment, tips and illustrations. Also within the packet was a great comb compliments of Dona. Winner of the grooming door prize was Mary Burke. This door prize consisted of a tackle box with a clipper, attachments and other grooming tools. Our deepest appreciation to Dona for making this a huge success. Both seminars had wonderful attendance with rave reviews and many compliments. On behalf of the club both presenters were given $25 Visa cards and a box of Newfoundland greeting cards. I would like to acknowledge the following people who were key in accomplishing this positive event day. Tara Bertrand hospitality and co-chair, Amy Corvillion ticket sales, Denita Jackman ticket sales, David Kledzik Jack of all trades, the spotters: Kathy Van Wie, John Jackman, Linda Larsen, Christine Brigham, and Rick Hartke. Thanks to all who brought an item for the brown bag, and to Linda L, Tara B, David K, and anyone who I might have missed for bringing a dessert. Our budget was set for $400. We only spent a bit over $350 for everything and came away will a small amount ahead! Great job was done by all. Respectfully submitted, Cissy Sullivan Chair

Newf News January/February 2012 page 5 DID SOMEBODY SAY PARADE! as told by Groovy Nicholas Look, I am a busy guy but I would never pass up on an opportunity to participate in a parade. My friend, Lori (she has Labradors, they re ok-cousins ya know) knows I am a great Draft Dog and asked me to walk in the Wheaton Dickens of a Christmas lighted parade. It sounded like great fun so I asked all my friends. Turns out I have a lot of friends. I started spreading the word via P-mail (I mean ) with the help of our computer friends and before I knew it, about 40 dogs were going to bring their people to walk in this parade. I really prefer the PR stuff so I talked my little brother into pulling the cart and I worked the crowd. My folks put lights, bells and a Merry Christmas sign on it and it looked great. There were a bunch of decorated carts pulled by my friends-they looked AWESOME! Some of my other friends were wearing costumes, special Christmas collars and clothes. Thanks so much to all our friends, near and far, who joined us in the parade. We might get invited back next year and I sure hope you can join us! The parade isn t very long, only about 5 blocks, but so many people wanted to meet me and my friends that we almost stopped the parade! The weather was perfect and the night was clear. All the floats and the band had lights. Santa rode on the biggest and best float at the very end. Newf News When renewing your NCNC membership please consider signing up for the version of Newf News. 8 page 8 Newf News January/February 2012 Newf Finder Delia was named by the Sauk Co., WI shelter staff. She was found in a farmer s field apparently after being hit by a car and severely injured. She is approx. 2 yrs. old and will be spayed after she recovers from her injuries. Molly, a ten-weekold puppy, was surrendered due to her owner s business transfer. She has been adopted. Jesse, a five year old, spayed female was placed in a Wisconsin home that reports, It s as if she has always lived here with us and our group! Natu, a fiveyear-old female, was surrendered to NCNC Rescue. She was spayed and placed in a northern Illinois home. Her new owner says, My granddaughter is staying with me for a few days and, of course, Natu adores her. Bella was transported by Cissy Sullivan and Tara Kelley-Bertrand in September to Gerlanda van de Matte for foster care. Bella was neglected due to her owner s poor health. She has been spayed and placed. Her new owner says, Bella is so special to me. I remain fully committed to her. I have never accepted responsibility for a dog without believing that she would be with me for her lifetime. Tank was 3 months old when he was surrendered by a young couple living in a Naperville apartment to Cissy Sullivan and Tara Bertrand who transported him for foster care. His severe giardia infestation was finally resolved by a treatment plan developed by a University of Wisconsin parasitology professor. Tank has been successfully placed. Zoey, a three year old, bred in western Wisconsin was surrendered to NCNC Rescue after she ran away from her second home while in season and was found with a neighbor s dog. Zoey was spayed and placed but returned as she didn t accept the elderly Newf in her first adoptive home. Zoey was placed again and her new Illinois family reports that, The ride home was very easy. She was very good! She seems to be adjusting well to her new home. She sleeps in our room, and seems to feel very comfortable in the house. Yesterday my parents came by to meet her. They both use walkers and as expected she was wonderful with them.

Newf News January/February 2012 page 9 More Newf Finder NCNC Rescue often provides counseling and referrals to assist Newfoundland owners who prefer direct adoptions: Lino is the new name chosen for a young male who strayed in Winnebago, IL county and was placed by that shelter before NCNC Rescue was contacted. The new owners have contacted NCNC Rescue for further information about raising a Newfoundland. They say, Over the past two days we first introduced our Flatcoated, then the Yorkie and last night all three were resting quietly in our kitchen/family room. Today they have eaten together, all gone out together, greeted 2 of my college age kids home for the Holiday and again napping. ALL of this seems too good to be true so soon! Sherman was shown on NCNC Rescue s webpage. He was placed directly and his former owner says, Thanks for your club s efforts to find the perfect place for Sherman. Jethro, a two-year-old male, was surrendered to the Waukesha County (WI) shelter, and reclaimed by his owner after neutering. Cathy Hartke attempted to counsel the owner. Please send your referrals to me for more information about NCNC Rescue. Potential adopters are always needed. Foster care is also needed. Please contact me if you can help Newfoundlands in our region. Mary L. Price mlprice@mhtc.net Welcome to The Black Paws Peddler!!. This is going to be the new name of NCNC's Newfie store! I am really excited to be able to take on this assignment but I also know that it can't be done by just one person nor do I have the right to have the only say in what we "offer" to our club members for purchase. I also believe that we should be able to offer items for sale to other Newfie owners throughout the country with the money supporting our events and rescue. I am looking for interested members to help "manage" the store...whether you have artistic talent, computer talent or just plain ideas please contact me. From there we will decide whether we can meet and do business online or perhaps have face to face meetings on a quarterly basis. I would like to be able to offer about 3-4 items at a time and I would "love" to be able to offer other items other than "wearable" goods. Perhaps things like pottery, grooming bags, etc for starters. So, if you would like to help me manage the store or if there are items that you would like to see the store offer, please feel free to contact droolyyrs220@gmail.com. I m looking forward to making this a venture that will serve all of a Newfie owner's interests! Tara Kelley-Bertrand

Newf News January/February 2012 page 11 President s Column (continued) October 4. The time/location/agenda information will be posted on NCNC s website. Club members are always welcome to attend. We finished 2011 with nearly all events breaking even or generating income sometimes substantial amounts through event fundraisers. This is important because we need additional revenue to offset the costs of insurance, club meetings, and other overhead expenses that membership dues alone are not sufficient to cover. Thank you for your generous support of NCNC! Tara Bertrand is working on ideas for the Black Paws Peddler selling fun Newfoundland dog items and unique NCNC branded items. If you d like to help her or have ideas on what might appeal to our breed owners, please let her know. Look for more details from Tara B. as she develops the store and inventory. Newfiepalooza funds are the exception because all income after expenses from this event goes to Rescue. This year Newfiepalooza raised $4745! Many thanks to Karen Clancy and Rhonda Brunning as well as the many volunteers who make this event a rousing success for a good cause. Also, the Board is still considering the idea of setting up NCNC s Rescue organization as a separate 501C3 entity. Donations to a 501C3 charity are tax deductible. Six regional clubs as well as the NCA have taken the steps to establish their Rescue group and associated funds as tax exempt charitable organizations. The increase in paperwork to achieve and then maintain this status is significant. As well, the charity needs a separate governing board and policies in place. If you have strong feelings either way about taking action on this item, please let us know your thoughts on this topic. While we re on the subject of money, here s a gentle reminder. Our club bylaws require members to renew by March 15 to remain a member in good standing. Please take a moment now to download the membership form from the web or send in the one included in this newsletter with your information and dues. The Vice President informs the Board of comments from renewals so if you would like to see additional activities, write them on your membership form or just contact anyone on the board. That s it for this newsletter hope to see you at Education Day in March if not sooner. Happy Newf Year to all! Cathy Hartke Picnic Time IN MEMORY CH. Moonfleet's Touch of Magic, RN, WD (Ernie) September 23, December 8, 2011 "Rest in peace my sweet soul". Greatly missed by Mary & Brian Trauernicht The NCNC Picnic and Annual Membership Meeting will be held June 10, 2012 at the Half Day Forest Preserve near Vernon Hills IL. We will have games, raffles, a cookout with potluck side dishes and dessert. John Mertens johnjmertens@earthlink.net
