1 September/October 2009 Serving Chicago, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Eastern Iowa Website: Editor: Angela Mertens 4109 Springbrook Ct Pleasant Prairie, WI (262) President s Column Cissy Sullivan Hi Newf Friends, When deciding what subject matter to cover in these columns I try to write about something that is pertinent to the present or something that could/has impacted our Newfs. Just recently an unfortunate accident occurred to one of our club members Newfs, and hopefully by relating the story I can heighten awareness. I am speaking about Maia. She is owned by Dona Baker and Mike Austin who have graciously given me permission to share Maia s misfortune in hopes that it will possibly help someone in the future. Maia ingested a small amount (according to a group of vets and the poison control agency) of ibuprofen. Unfortunately for Maia even this small amount affected her kidneys causing her system to shut down, creating a very touch and go situation. Maia struggled daily for a period of three weeks before she could spend anytime away from the animal hospital and then it was only for nights, having to go back daily for IV treatments. Now four months after the incident Maia is a success story in the making. She is back to her old self, continually showing positive movements to regain appropriate ratios, which of course point to healthier and regular kidney functioning. Maia s success can be attributed to MANY things, but Dona and Mike s quick reaction along with the coordinated efforts of vets and Poison Control Agencies were key. Even today Maia is monitored with Maia during recovery blood tests. The vets and Poison Control Departments still conference about her incident, gleaning new information that can be posted and documented for future help. Dona and Mike will forever have imbedded the creatine, phosphorus and BUN levels in their brains that are deemed appropriate for Maia. They both would be excellent support if someone finds themselves in an unfortunate situation like theirs. I am grateful they offered to allow me to discuss this. The Animal Poison Control Center has reported handling 15,000 cases of toxicity in animals in 2008 alone. I think we all have heard about the dangers of chocolate, but many probably do not think about grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, or Xylitol. Xylitol is a crystalline alcohol sweetener used in toothpaste, chewing gum, some baked goods, candy and breath mints. We also as owners think that because our Newfoundlands are a giant breed that it would take a HUGE amount of any of these to affect them, but that was NOT the case for Maia. You just never know, they are all different. You can get a comprehensive list of these possibly dangerous foods by visiting If you suspect a problem contact your vet as soon as possible, there also are Regional pet poison-control centers. A heads up they all CHARGE a fee, but I am sure a fee is the least of your Continued on page 7

4 page 4 Newf News September/October 2009 North Central Newfoundland Club's Annual Water Test Sunday, September 20, 2009 Plans are being finalized for this year s water test which will be held at a new site in Muskego Park in Muskego, Wisconsin, just south and east of Waukesha. The test is scheduled for Sunday, September 20 with a water practice and optional obedience on Saturday, September 19. An enclosed shelter with showers, changing rooms and room for our catered banquet is just steps from the beach area. Our always well stocked auction and raffle will also be featured. Donations are gratefully accepted. A General Membership Meeting will also be held. On Sunday we will have some catered items for lunch but donations of salads and deserts are again always appreciated. This water test site also has a campgroud within walking distance of the test site. If you haven't signed up to attend the Banquet, there is still room. Contact Dona Baker at dona@salondona.com or phone to let her know you are coming. The Banquet will begin at 5:30 pm followed by our auction/raffle and general membership meeting. Please also come out on Sunday to cheer on our Newfs and their owners as they show their skills in the water. I believe water is the most fun and rewarding activity we can do with our Newfs. It is what they were bred for and there is nothing as much fun as watching these magnificent animals in the water. It is a great family day. If you would like to volunteer as a steward to help with this test, please contact Joan Gunn, , blkwatchnewfs@charter.net. Many jobs, such as holding leashes for entrants, need no previous experience. We have a full test with many members from our club. Our water practices have been full of new workers who have made wonderful progress. Test Chair is Roger Danielsen, newfdog@wi.rr.com and our test Secretary is Tara Martin, ctazmartin@comcast.net. Our judges for this year are Lori Littleford and Linda Morely Roser. Premiums have been mailed and is also available on our website at Hope to see you all on September 19 and 20!
