1 MICHIGAN CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVER CLUB April / May South Dakota Rescue Submitted by Michelle Keehn. Last year the club had donated money to the South Dakota dogs so here is an update. Hi Everyone, It has now been a year since Todd, Jackie, Pat and I made the long trip west to pick up the South Dakota dogs. If you don't remember these dogs were living in a home with an elderly couple and had not been allowed outside for three months. The police had been called by the neighbors because they had not seen the people or the dogs for such a long time. Animal control took the Chessies in and then CBRRR was brought in. All of the dogs were initially taken to Sally Ranken for evaluation and vet care. The first of our SD dogs that was adopted out was Haden. Haden was heartworm positive and was fostered by a brand new Montana volunteer. He was adopted to a Montana family as soon as he finished treatment. Hannah was the mother of the younger dogs and unfortunately after she had been fattened up, we found out she was pregnant again. She delivered 4 puppies in August which were all placed. Hannah herself is still in foster care but has moved to Joe Norkus' where he has helped her get past some of her fears. She is ready to be adopted. Belle is one of the younger dogs. She was adopted by a family in Michigan in October. She has made such great progress since being adopted. Dana was adopted last week by a family in Colorado. They were in the IL area with their Chessie Diva and visited Dana. The Chessie girls are getting along great. Diva will take her ball to her and drop it for Dana to play with. Kane was moved to a foster home in IL and the foster family fell in love and will be adopting him. Colton, Ryan and Emily are still in foster care with Sally Ranken. All three of them are ready to be adopted out once good matches are found. Well that is assuming that Sally's youngest daughter will let her buddy Ryan be adopted. Bonne is also one of the younger dogs and is with Trish Wilson. She is ready to be adopted out to a patient special home. As mentioned previously Hannah is with Joe. Now that Hannah no longer hates men she is also ready to be adopted. It has taken a lot of hard work by so many people to save these dogs. But this is one of those rescues that makes you really glad to be 1

Rita Peters CBRRR volunteer Saginaw Valley Supported Show By Tina Cox We had a wonderful entry for the supported show held April 10 in Birch Run, with an entry of 43 Chessie s. Our judge Mrs. Betsy Horn Humer did a splendid job judging dogs. Many of our own Michigan dogs received high placements see the brags section for details. The trophy table looked spectacular with many donated items and trophies purchased with monetary donations. Our trophy chair Deb Rhodes did a wonderful job with organizing this event. After breed we met in one of the lunch rooms for a lunch and club meetings. We had several visitors join us and all seemed to have a nice time eating good food provided by the club and its members and socializing. Warm Weather Reminders Submitted by Tina Cox With the warm weather and growing season finally here I thought I would post this just as a reminder of some of the dangers for our four legged friends that lurk in our yards and gardens. Autumn crocus (Colchicum): Its active ingredient, colchicines, triggers an antimetabolic effect that can cause rapidly dividing cells, shedding of the gastrointestinal tract, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. Azalea (Rhododendron): This popular plant can harm a dog's cardiovascular system and trigger vomiting or gastrointestinal upset. Daffodil (Narcissus): Toxic ingredients in the bulbs cause convulsions, tremors, lethargy, weakness, and upset stomachs. Hyacinth (Hyacinth): This popular plant can cause severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, depression, and tremors. Japanese yew (Taxis): Extremely toxic to dogs, this group of ornamental plants can cause seizures or cardiac failure. The plant and red berries are toxic. Lily of the valley (Convalaria): This plant can cause heart failure, coordination problems, and vomiting. Oleander (Nerium): Extremely toxic, this popular outdoor plant contains cardiac glycosides that harm the heart, decrease body temperature, cause abnormal pulse rate, and can cause death. Beware: Even people have died from eating hot dogs roasted on an oleander twig. Rhubarb (Rheum): Although the stalks are used to make pies, the leaves pack the potential to cause kidney damage. Sago palm (Cycads): Resembling an upside down pineapple, this plant thrives in sandy soils, especially in warmer states such as California, Texas, and Florida. A few seeds can kill a dog. Tomato (Lycopersicion): Surprisingly, the greenery of this common plant, not the tomato itself, contains solanine, a toxic ingredient that can prompt gastric upset, depression, weakness, and a decrease in heart rate. Richardson's parting advice: Keep your dog away from any mushrooms. "Always assume any ingested mushroom by a dog is toxic and 2

3 will cause liver failure," Richardson says. "The problem is that many poisonous mushrooms often grow together with non-poisonous mushrooms." We are here but for a moment so remember don t take life to seriously and learn to laugh at yourself h-welfare/54651-plants-avoid-long-article.htm Recipes for Dog Treats Microwave Tuna Cake Submitted by Michelle Keehn 3 eggs Plain flour Garlic Tin tuna with sunflower oil (not brine) Mix tuna, garlic, eggs in a bowl and add flour till you get a paste consistency. Put in microwave safe dish and cook for approx 7 mins. Let cool and cut in squares. Liver Cake Submitted by Tina Cox 2 cups flour 1 cup corn meal 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 pound beef liver pureed ½ cup oil 1 egg About ½ - ¾ water Mix all in a bowl together until smooth, should be thick like brownie mix. Pour into 9x13 greased pan bake at 350 degrees for about minutes. Cool and cut into 1 inch squares. 3
