1 June 2016 Term dates for 2016 President s Blog: Here we are nearly over our second term of training. It is great to see people coming back and continuing their training with their dogs. I think we have been really lucky with the weather this term with only a couple of nights of rain, last Tuesday being the worst. At the end of this term in our break on the 7 June we are holding a training class for children with their dogs. It is a one evening class and we hope that the children and their dogs have a lot of fun. I would like to thank our instructors for this term, all who volunteer their time to help you and your dogs. I would also like to congratulate members of the club who have done well at obedience, breed and rally o. Congratulations to all those students who passed their class this term. And to those who didn't quite make it, don't despair, look at how far you and your dog have come this term and don't forget any time spent working with and training your dog is time well spent. Next term starts on the 14 th June and continues at Longburn. It is always helpful if you pre-enrol so that we have an idea of numbers. You can do this either with the enrolment form given out tonight or by going to dogtraining.org.nz. Our club also has a Facebook page where we post information. Please join us and feel free to post as well. As winter is definitely feeling like it has hit us please remember to stay visible, safe and warm. I trust you have all had an enjoyable term of training and hope to see many of you back next term. Remember training should be fun. 2 Instructor / Committee Profile: Robyn Bland Let me introduce myself. My name is Robyn and I am the President of our lovely club. I live with my husband Chris and daughter Veronica and our 4 dogs, Keeva (3/4 Border Collie x Bearded Collie), Bangles (Miniature Poodle), Lochie and Lucas (both Golden Retrievers). We also have a couple of cats, tropical fish and some sheep. I am presently competing in Obedience competitions with my youngest dog Lucas who is nearly 4 years old, who you saw me working on our club demo night. Lucas is also Breed shown and handled by my daughter. Working with my dogs has meant I have been able to do some really neat things... Keeva has been on stage several times; she has been in 2 dance productions and was Sandy in Annie for Freyberg High school. I have also done Pet Therapy; I worked with a therapist and took my dogs and cats into hospital and also into Old folk s homes doing some work in the dementia and Alzheimer s area which was very rewarding at times. I have also spent some time taking various animals into preschool groups. Although I enjoy competing first and foremost my dogs are pets, they live inside with us, come on holidays with us and of course keep especially me fit and make going on walks a lot of fun. As President of our club I would love to see our club grow. I would really like to get your ideas on things we could do better and what you would like to see us offering. Please feel free to speak to me at any time TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT: SLEDDING FUN If you like to try new things then here s a great one for you to enjoy with your dog. Sled Dog Racing. Any dog that likes to run is suitable. The season is just starting, it needs to be cool/cold so the dogs don t get heat stressed, races start in the North Island in the middle of July and go through to September. Most people start with one dog and a scooter (we have spares for you to try). The scooter is usually made from recycled mountain bikes. It s a great way to make winter whizz by. You don t have to race so if you are interested in trying this fun thing to do with your dog contact Cushla With the onset of WINTER here make sure kennels are leak-proof & draft free so your dog can stay warm & dry

3 WORKING TRIALS Working Trials (Tracking) is a sport where you and your dog work together as a team. You must learn to interpret your dog s actions to work out whether they re on the track or not. The track is laid by a person, between 600m to 900m long depending on the level you are working at, will have at least three corners in it and have an article at the end and for the higher levels one or two articles in the middle. Utility Dog (UD) has a 600m track with an article at the end, and is half an hour old. You also have a seekback where you drop an article and your dog must track back and find it, a heelwork course, sendaway usually 40-50m and in a particular direction, a scale jump, clear jump and long jump (the height and length are dependent on the dogs height) and a 10 minute down stay with the handler out of sight. Working Dog (WD) has an m track with one article approximately halfway and one at the end, and is 1½ hours old. It also contains a search of an area 23m x 23m which contains four articles, the clear jump and long jump are included in the heelwork, in the sendaway once your dog has gone out 50m you must redirect it left or right depending on which way the judge indicates, there is also a 10 minute down stay as in UD. Tracking Dog (TD) contains three tracks, a 500m hard surface track which is either gravel or tarseal with one article halfway and one at the end, 15 minutes old if on gravel and 5 minutes on tarseal. A m free track which is 30 minutes old with one article at the end, the dog completes this one by themselves while you stay at the start peg. The m leash track is 3 hours old with two articles on the track and one at the end. While all dogs can track the difficult part is getting them to track what you want them to a human scent is much less inviting to a dog than a rabbit track so if you think you might like to give this sport a go my best advice would be don t let you dogs chase rabbits! Cassie Working Trials Champion Liver Cake Treats Put together in a whiz: 500gms liver 1 cup wheat germ 1 cup any kind of flour (although maize or rye is tasty) 4 eggs A clove of garlic Press the go button and whiz till sloppy put on baking paper on tray or meat dish Cook at 300 (180) for 20 minutes leave to cool and cut. Freezes well but will go mouldy if not refrigerated. This food MUST be out of dog reach they (dogs) are absolutely shameless in the lengths that they will go to sample this delicious food!!! This is an ideal training treat as it is eaten easily and quickly and doesn t make hands or pockets messy.
