2 2 Training Tips Attention, Please The only way to get your dog to comply with your training is to have her undivided attention. Dogs are easily distracted-just like children. When you begin ant training session, pick a place and a time where distractions are minimal. When you re ready, say your dog s name, and wait for her eyes to meet yours. Clap your hands or whistle if you have to, and make sure she is watching and waiting for your cue to see what to do next- From Come, Sit, Stay by Arden Moore. Activities for You and Your Dog Make it! Dog Paw Relief This recipe was included in Essential Oils for Dogs by Julie Summers: 2 tbsp coconut oil 2 tbsp Shea butter 2 tbsp beeswax 1 teaspoon Jojoba oil 1-2 drops lavender oil 1-2 drops Thieves oil 1-2 drops Frankincense oil Combine coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax in a small glass. Put glass in pot with some water and heat on low. Once melted and cooled, add the essential oils and transfer to a container. Teach Tricks! Teach Rollover Have your pup sit and lie down, and then, keeping the food lure extremely close to the pup s body, instruct the pup to Rollover, and move the lure backwards along one side of its muzzle to the top of its neck and over its shoulders. As your pup rolls over onto its side and back, keep moving the food lure so that it rolls completely over into the down position once more. Once your puppy has mastered roll-over, a variation is to have the pup roll in the opposite direction with the obvious request, Now, roll the other way. Be Safe! Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies can cause kidney failure in cats if ingested. Opt for just-asjolly artificial plants made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe bouquet.

Always warm up by walking, then accelerate into a short jog and ease into a running pace. Cool down with a walk before returning home. Read! The New Yorker Book of Dog Cartoons by The New Yorker available at Amazon.com Bake It! 1/2 cups whole wheat flour 2 eggs 1/2 cup canned pumpkin 2 tablespoons peanut butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces. 3. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes. Science Fix Recent research shows that dogs are actually smarter than cats. Dogs, it turns out, have about twice the number of neurons in their cerebral cortexes than what cats have, which suggests they could be about twice as intelligent. This finding was provisionally accepted for publication and will soon publish in the journal Frontiers in Neuroanatomy. A team of researchers from six different universities in the U.S., Brazil, Denmark, and South Africa contributed to the research. As a dog lover, I have known that for years. Wonder how much money they spent on that research.

New titles Becky Sheets-Klinger- Shiner (GriffinFarms Stardust Trails Pocketful of Sunshine) - age 1 yr - AKC titles in 2017: NA, NAJ, TKN, TKI, TKA Tyler - age 13 yrs - AKC titles in TKN, TKI, TKA Sis - age 12 yrs - AKC titles in TKN Victor Von Klinger - age 6 yrs - titles in TKN Dan Stahl- Bentley-Beginner s Novice (BN) and Novice (CD) Dog Birthdays Becki Sheets-Klinger reports that Sis celebrated her 12th Birthday on and Tyler celebrated his 13th Birthday on AKC Star Puppy Marilyn Epley, Bonnie Cook, and Becky Phillips conducted Star Puppy classes during our fall obedience class. 11 puppies enrolled and 8 completed all of their requirements. Congrats to Becky Phillips puppy, June, who completed all 20 of her requirements. Dog Jokes What kind of dog chases anything red? A bulldog! Why did the dog walk into the bar? He was looking for the man who shot his paw. Harley and Roxie CGC Helpers!! Why don t blind people go skydiving more often? Because it frightens the dog!

5 5 Club News Continued Trick Dogs Becky Sheets-Klinger s 4 dogs completed trick dog evaluations. Shiner, Tyler, Victor, and Sis all completed the Novice Requirements. Shiner and Tyler completed the Intermediate Requirements. Shiner and Tyler also completed the Advance Trick Dog Requirements. Marilyn Epley converted Savannah s Do More With Your Dog Novice Trick dog to an AKC Novice Trick Dog Title. Marilyn was invited by the South Central Kansas Dog Club in Winfield, KS to evaluate their Trick Dog class in November. 10 dogs earned Novice Trick Dog Titles and 1 earned Intermediate Trick Dog Titles. 1 dog earned his Canine Good Citizen (CGC). Slate of Officers for 2018 The Nominating Committee headed by Bill Bob Nix presented the following: President-Ruth Daugherty Vice President-Vicki Boyer Treasurer-Marsha Baldridge Secretary-Becky Phillips Board Member- Carol Stewart, Becky Sheets-Klinger, Maxine Hasselbring, Marilyn Epley, Kathryn Hand, and Bryan Hand-4 will be elected. The election will occur December 4 and new officers will fill positions starting in January, Club dues can be paid in December. Pay to Marilyn at the Christmas party or mail a check to Marilyn Epley, 500 Redbird Drive, Ponca City, OK before Dec. 31, Club dues remain a huge bargain at only $10 per person or $15 per couple/family. Memberships in other local dog clubs are much higher.
