3 S A L U K I C L U B O f A M E R I C A Page 3 From the President MARCH 2011 I am writing this message shortly before we receive the results of the Brindle Research Team s report. Hopefully this report will be in your hands before you read this message. First, all of us owe a great big THANK YOU to the team who put this together for us. Brian Duggan, Lin Hawkyard and Casey Gonda worked on this for five months. They have done their best to provide us with an unbiased set of information about the Brindle Coat Pattern in Salukis. It has not been an easy road for them as they sifted through years of history, many documents, photographs and genetic research work. Second, I urge every SCOA member to spend time with this document and read all of it. I have not yet seen it and will read my copy of it after it is mailed to everyone but I understand that it is extensive and informative. SCOA members are passionate about our breed. This is as it should be. People with opinions on either side of the Brindle Coat Pattern are likewise passionate about what they believe. There has been a cry from members for unbiased information on this subject. I do not know if this research will bolster or refute anyone s opinion. I do know that three of our members put a great deal of effort into bringing it to you for your consideration. We owe it to them and to the Breed to read it with an open mind. Jay Kappmeier March 4th, 2011

5 Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 5 Reports of the Secretaries Minutes of the mid-year Teleconference 3/05/11 The meeting was called to order at 5:42 pm EST Present were Jay Kappmeier, Gary Roush, Mary Beth Rogers, Catherine Comroe, Sharon Walls, Cindy Brown, Frank Farrar, Diana Farmer, Jan Isley, Lorraine Trenholm, Monica Stoner- Delegate. There was discussion on how to bring the escalating costs of the National into line so the club could maintain solid financial footing. Gary Roush noted that the single most important financial revenue stream for the club was the National, followed by the Book of Records and dues. The Board must address declining revenues. Entry fees have been unchanged for at least 4 years, catalog ad costs also have not changed. Traditionally, auction revenues have been split with the organizations/committees who worked the auction. Vendor rates also have not changed in years. Lure coursing expenses remain high, particularly judging expenses. The Board agreed by consensus that the following steps would be implemented for the 2011 National Entries- first entry $36.00 Puppies $27.00 Sweepstakes $ Catalog ads- Full page, photo or no photo, $ half page $40.00 full page color $ If a full page is purchased, $5.00 discount on a marked catalog. Catalog Sales price- Pre ordered $10.00, on site $15.00, marked $ Live auction will have no revenue split, the number of items offered will be limited. Silent Auction will have no revenue split unless a group steps up to actually do the work, this gives the show chair some latitude in working with people. No seminar this year. Vendor space rates will be $ for a 10 x 10 for one day or duration of the show. Agility committee has made arrangements for Agility to be held this year in Louisville Kentucky. The Board is appreciative of the efforts made by Chair Celeste Johnson to find a revenue responsible way to have Agility as part of the National. The Show will run 4 days. The Show Chair will rearrange the schedule. The Lure coursing committee will be asked to reduce judging costs to $ The committee needs to work with Show Chair schedule The Show Chair will ensure the Judging contracts are adhered to. Premiums will be electronic this year. Show chair should look at reducing tenting. The Show Chair will look at the show secretary, superintendent and stewards expenses for the best cost savings. The Board next discussed possible ways to increase Book of Records revenue. Jay Kappmeier will work with Chair Carol Fisher, set up timely deposits on revenue, handout cards to eligible winners when they get the award. The committee will be asked to start to transition to electronic solicitations instead of USPS. The other major club expense is our newsletter. In the upcoming months the Board will explore the possibility of moving to an electronic newsletter for the majority of the membership. A member is required to have performance activity experience, and qualifies as such with having one of the choices below: 1. participated in, with a saluki, a minimum of 20 open field or lure coursing trials in 10 years 2. is either a lure coursing judge, an open field coursing judge or an open field huntmaster. It is agreed that the committee member speaks for the JEC and agrees to the policies and precepts of the Committee. Members of the JEC Must have a computer and access Must follow JEC rules for putting photos into programs Must follow JEC rules for additions to programs Must follow JEC Rules for hands-on presentations Must agree to follow JEC philosophy Must fit AKC requirements for mentors: AKC requirement is (noting that the litters must be whelped and raised personally) Should have some capability to work with Power Point, or at least view the program in Power point viewer The following additional abilities are highly desirable and should be considered when suggesting new members for the committee. The higher the level of computer skills, the better Should be able to resize photos Should be available to give presentations, and able to travel on their own dime. Should be able to set up a computer and run the presentation 2. Gary Roush moved to seat Jan Isley on the internet committee as requested by the Chair, Susan Schroeder. Jan Isley seconded the motion which carried unanimously. Jay Kappmeier noted that as we have moved through the various stages of the brindle debate we have kept AKC in the loop and, as the Brindle Research Team has agreed, he would like to see the packet, with all material supplied to Mike Liosis at AKC. 5. Gary Roush moved that SCOA will mail a hard copy of the BRT report and all supporting documentation including the survey ballot, to Mike Liosis at AKC. Diana Farmer seconded the motion which carried unanimously. Discussion was had on how we deal with the SCOA member list as both moderators had resigned due to the volume of posts both on the list and the tenor of the s received privately. The list has proven to be difficult if not impossible to moderate over the last few years. It is the opinion of the Board that the list cannot be maintained without two fulltime moderators who can moderate daily. 5. Gary Roush moved that owing to the resignation of both moderators the Board will suspend posting to the member e- list until other solutions can be evaluated. The motion was seconded by Diana Farmer and carried unanimously. There was discussion about Carol Fishers request for help from the Board regarding the insistence by one of the members that the Chair of the BoR was not acting properly because she would not list Best in International Invitational (an ASFA event) as a title. SCOA recognizes titles from title issuing organizations like AKC and ASFA. Currently, BII is an event award and not recognized by ASFA as a title. Gary Roush followed up and found this was correct. The next Board meeting is set for March 24, Gary Roush moved to adjourn at 8:45pm EST Respectfully submitted, Mary Beth Rogers, Recording Secretary

8 Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 8 Delegate s Report DELEGATE MEETING MARCH 2011 HIGHLIGHTS: Election of three board members: Robert A. Amen, Dr. Carmen L. Battaglia, Steven D. Gladstone. Voted to update requirements for show veterinarians, and to create a common deadline for show and judge panel applications. Motions read on: an AKC Board member who has served two consecutive terms will be ineligible to run until they sit out one full four year term. There is an I-Phone app with photos of AKC recognized breeds, along with a write up and the standard. Photos were chosen by AKC, and can be changed by the Parent Club, with a maximum of three photos per breed. FROM THE COMMITTEES: Parent Club Committee: Wikipedia. At the last meeting, the definition of AKC on Wikipedia was discussed, and a decision made to correct this definition, parts of which are AR slanted. Since changes can be made by anyone, AKC posted different language, which was changed quickly back to the original wording. This has happened several times. AKC has attempted to establish a temporary block on changes but it s better to have multiple references and footnotes to verify the message. AKC Referral Program - AKC sends a list of people who have achieved titles on their dogs to the Parent Clubs. A suggestion was made to use this list as an outreach to contact people concerning membership in the Parent Club, or at least in local clubs. Going from the other direction, when a puppy has reached six months, AKC contacts the owner to advise them concerning all breed or breed clubs in their area, Breeder of Merit program: A proposal was put forward to place Parent Club members who hold a Breeder of Merit at the top of the list for that breed. Concerns were expressed about the program having no teeth, since people say they have had recommended tests performed when in fact they have not. Plus there is no provision for passing the tests, only for having them done. It was pointed out some breeds are in such dire straits, if they eliminated suspect dogs from their breeding programs, the breed would be finished. By testing, they are able to use the least affected dogs and work toward improving health of the breed. The question came up on how to motivate Parent Clubs to encourage their members to apply for Breeder of Merit. One suggestion is a Parent Club of Excellence, based on a percentage of membership accomplishments, number of new members, with the number of Breeders of Merit weighing heavily, along with JEC programs and AKC titles. This program is still in planning. A question came up concerning requirements to join a Parent Club. At the AKC Parent Club Conference, a straw poll showed the Afghan Hound and Saluki Club have the longest requirement, of seven years, which the Afghan Hound club has since reduced. When asked, AKC said this was a decision of the Parent Club. AKC reviews By Laws and makes recommendations according to the state of incorporation but does not interfere in the longevity decision. Membership requirements must be in the By Laws. Moratorium on new clubs. AKC has halted confirmation of new clubs while a study is made concerning the number of clubs and size of shows. In some areas there are too many clubs, and some of the clubs are failing. A point was made concerning parts of the country where the usual drive to a show is more than three hours, and the different needs of dog show exhibitors and clubs in different parts of the country. Alan Kalter said it this is more of a pause than a full stop. Mention was made by several members of the importance of local specialty clubs, and staff agreed the proposal needs to be reviewed according to type and location of club.

9 Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 9 Canine Health Committee - There was a discussion concerning sponsorship of the Veterinary Outreach program. The current sponsors are not realizing enough feedback from the schools, and do not want to continue support. At this time the message the students get is to sterilize dogs, and that breeders are bad. AKC proposed an on campus student liaison who could assist in promoting pure bred dogs, and funds have been allocated for a pilot program. CHIC - There are now 141 breeds in the CHIC program, with just under 65,000 dogs issued CHIC numbers. The DNA bank has 12,000 blood samples from 155 breeds. This year CHIC will be presenting at the national specialties of Shetland Sheepdogs, Whippets, Cavaliers and Bouviers. They can schedule to present when asked, and can coordinate this with a study done for the breed. The best location they have found for presentations and any lab work has been Purina, since there is a local vet school plus excellent facilities. Legislative issues pertaining to canine health: Translocation of live animals (importing dogs for the animal shelters in the US. The incidence of heartworm has increased exponentially in areas with a high number of imports, along with many other diseases including Brucellosis. Legislation in Irvine CA to close the sale of live animals in pet shops also wants to regulate breeders who sell through the Internet (not regulated by USDA). The language right now affects breeders who produce more than fifty puppies a year, owned or co-owned breedings. The Canine Health Foundation has made a deal with CBS for 30 second Public Service Announcements eight times a day, on the board in Times Square. The Bloat Survey has been submitted to the Veterinary Journal of Medicine and is now in peer review. Breeder of Merit - Clubs need to make a decision on health tests to help with adding levels of recognition to the program. At this time, out of 29,000 breeders, only 16,000 can reach the current standards for Breeder of Merit. Additional requirements, such as DNA for all breeding stock, could be used for a tiered recognition program. AKC is checking a sample of litter registrations for those who apply for Breeder of Merit, to verify if health tests have been conducted. Often when they call the breeders have either done the tests but not submitted the results, or they have the tests done right away. If no tests are recommended by the Parent Club, then no tests are required by AKC. Respectfully Submitted Monica Henderson Stoner Delegate

Brian Duggan Awards Selection Process Committee March 2011 As of February 21, 2011 I have not received any nominations for the Friend of the Saluki or the AKC Good Sportsmanship Awards. The deadline was March 1. This is disappointing as the nomination forms have been available online all year and reminders have been put in the newsletter. Respectively submitted, Beverly Griffith Book of Records The 2010 Book of Records project is currently underway. We sent out 230 US invite letters, Three to people in Canada and 57 invite letters.the invite letters all included each person s dog s accomplishments and a page with an order form. Respectively submitted, Beverly Griffith 2/21/2011 Desert-Bred Education The Desert Bred Exhibition At the National Pending the finalization of the National schedule, we anticipate that the Desert Bred Exhibition will be held the evening of Thursday, June 9. We will once again be putting together a catalog of Generation 0-2 hounds entered in the Exhibition, and ask that exhibitors send information about their COO and COO descent hounds, including generation, dog s name, sire and dam if known, birth date, breeder, owner, and primary COO to Mary Beth Rogers <arteclectic@bealenet.com> by May 1st for inclusion in the catalog. Last minute entrants will not be turned away, but they will not be in the catalog. If in doubt, go ahead and include your hound in the catalog. If you will be bringing a Gen 3 hound, it would also be helpful to have that information in advance. We are also offering the opportunity to advertise in the! Exhibition Catalog. We will be implementing a new format for the catalog this year - we will be using the same catalog format, complete with the same advertising, for all Desert Bred Exhibitions held throughout the year, including the National, and any SCOA Regional specialties. The Exhibition entries will change to reflect the entries of each event, but the rest of the catalog will remain the same. This means more coverage for your advertising dollar. Price for a full page ad is $35 and all ads are due by May 1st. For more Exhibition details, contact Susan Schroeder < ashshira@ siriusenterprises.com - please put the words Desert Bred Exhibition in the subject line> or visit our page on the National web site at national-events/desert-breds/. Exhibition entrants published in the catalog will be included in the 2011 SCOA Book of Records, with the opportunity to add photographs for a fee. The desert bred community has traditionally done a great job of supporting the Book of Records. Let s continue to support this very worthwhile publication. Following the Exhibition we will once again welcome one and all into the ring for a meet and greet with the exhibitors and the hounds. Feel free to share this information. We are looking forward to seeing everyone and their Salukis in June! Respectfully submitted, Susan Schroeder Chair, Desert Bred Education

If you haven t had a chance to check it out, please take the time to take a look at it: It is being updated as the committee receives information about the various events scheduled for the National. In addition to event and schedule information, you will find places to donate for trophies, sign up for things such as marked catalogs and costume classes, as well as information about places to stay. Like so many endeavors this club undertakes, the web site depends on the input of the various committees for accurate, current information. If you have updates for the website, please send them to webkeeper@salukiclub. org. Respectfully submitted, Susan Schroeder, Chair Judges Education The Judges Education Committee has completed the work requested by the board in regard to a discrepancy in the language pertaining to committee membership requirements. They have also added a clarification (requested by the board) as to how field experience is quantified. This work has been submitted to the board and is on the agenda to be reviewed for approval at the next board telephone meeting later this week.

20 Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 20 The committee has also been working on a list of approved mentors and is close to finishing a preliminary list. Hopefully, AKC and those requesting information about judging the breed will find this list useful. (The requirements for mentor approval were approved by the board in 2010 and have been posted to the SCOA website.) Upcoming seminars &/or workshops: Diane Divin will do a seminar for the Dallas Judges Workshop in May, June will see the formal program once again presented at the national specialty according to AKC requirements, and in Aug., two formal presentations are scheduled (unfortunately, only a few hours drive from one another and in the same week), one for the ADSJ Advanced Institute and one for the AKC Advanced Hound Institute. Respectfully submitted, Linda Scanlon Judges Selection Process Please see the enclosed inserts. Respectifully submitted, Bernie Betlach, Chair Legislative Awareness We are currently experiencing a well funded, and strategically astute Animal Rights Movement, which has an end goal of severing direct ties between Humans and Animals, a process which removes our rights & our freedom of choice in pets, diet, clothing, entertainment, and more. Their strategic attacks, in the form of legislation, drafted in small incremental steps, are designed to whittle away your rights are on many fronts; against farmers, research, entertainment, hunters, and animal ownership and breeding. The sophisticated AR organizations are masters at utilizing the Media, have huge legal departments, make substantial political contributions, and effectively use lobbyists, and manipulation of their constituents into mass e-, fax, phone, and letter campaigns. Most all of the animal enterprises affected have formed strong organizations to counter these threats with the exception of the (companion) small animal fanciers who suffer from apathy and the willingness to allow the Animal Rights organizations to divide us among ourselves. In several battles in California, Missouri, Nebraska, and other states we have seen hunters and farm organizations rising to topple legislative attacks on dog and cat ownership while our members do very little. It is time overdue for us to wake up and defend our rights. The first step is being aware and then taking an active role. There are several organizations tracking threatening legislation, which we can tap into. They are quite efficient at tracking at a Federal and State level but tracking legislation at Municipal level is dependant on each of us tracking in our own communities and IMMEDIATELY reporting proposed legislation to our State Federations, the AKC, or NAIA who will analyze, assess risk and develop a plan of action. Federal & State Legislative Challenges Please feel free to check your state on these various sites/lists that follow... Monthly! If you become aware of a situation in your State or Municipality that may be of concern and have not received an alert, please do contact your State Federation (if you have one), the AKC Gov. Relations Dpt. at the AKC site, NAIA site, or contact the SCOA Legislative Awareness Committee & we will pursue it through the various sources. Local & Municipal Legislative Challenges Please find out what newspaper or other media your municipality uses to post public notices. All proposed changes in existing ordinances and proposed new ordinances MUST be posted to allow for public input before they are voted on. Check these regularly to make sure a new anti dog ordinance is not snuck through while you were napping. If you see something of concern contact your state Federation &/or the AKC for advice and guidance. If an experienced person cannot attend the appropriate meeting with you the AKC will advise & if appropriate send a personalized letter advising the township/city on appropriate State restrictions or amendments to make the proposal legal and reasonable. It is immensely easier to defeat a proposal before it is adopted than to try to repeal or change it after the fact. Following are several resources where you can track Proposed Legislative Changes that may affect you and your right to continue to enjoy your Animals. While this committee will continue to alert you to whatever situations we become aware of, checking the lists monthly and your municipal notices weekly gives us a better grip on what needs to be addressed in a timely manner.

Monthly National Legislation Report from Ken Sondej & Linda Witkwski Ken & Linda prepare a list monthly that list legal actions of interest or concern Federally, by State, and by municipality within each State. The Federal and State legislation listings should be fairly accurate as these can be taken from Government Sites.
