S A L U K I C L U B O f A M E R I C A Page 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Winter 2018 Newsletter Planning for June 2018 is progressing well. Our Show Chair, Monica Stoner, is working with her committees to maintain or exceed the high standards that we have come to expect for our National Specialty. Our conformation judge will be Frank Farrar and our sweepstakes judge will be Joseph Minor. Please remember that the National will be back to our normal date which will be one week earlier than in It will take place on June 5 to 9, The Board has approved a proposal to hold the 2019 National in June at Purina Farms. Our 2019 Show Chairman will be Patsy Hoy. As with 2018, the date will be the week after the Mississippi Valley and Missouri Rhineland Kennel Club shows. Helen Graham will be our conformation judge. I m pleased to report that SCOA has its first applicant for associate membership. It will be addressed at our January Board meeting. On a sad note, I report the passing of Jeanne Niswonger. We have again lost a good friend. We will try to notify the membership of members recently passing in our Newsletters, recognizing that there will be gaps because of imperfect information. Passing members are recognized in our National Specialty catalog each year and we will be sending a catalog to the families of those included. As always, if you have thoughts, ideas or questions, the Board welcomes comments to secretary@salukiclub.org. As I write this, the Holidays have just ended. I hope that everyone had happy ones and I wish you the best for the New Year. Gary M. Carol Fisher seconded the motion which carried. Katie Souder moved to accept the minutes of the 2016 Annual Meeting. Carol Fisher seconded the motion which carried. Report of the President I would like to welcome everyone to the 2017 General Membership Meeting and the 2017 National Specialty. I want to thank you both for attending the National and this meeting. It has already been an eventful two days and there are three to go. I would like to thank Russell McFadden and his committees for all their work to make this a successful National. I also want to thank the volunteers that serve on SCOA s committees. It is a lot of work and their efforts are appreciated. The 2016/2017 year was a busy one for SCOA. The Board received and approved an excellent proposal for the 2018 National Specialty to be held at Purina Farms and chaired by Russell McFadden. The Board has issued a request for proposals for 2019 and It takes a lot of pressure off the planning and execution of the National to have the site and chair identified two years ahead. Please note that the 2018 National will be one week earlier than this year as we will be getting back onto our regular schedule. The regular classes judge for 2018 will be Frank Farrar. The sweepstakes judge for 2018 will be Joseph Minor. The winner of the balloting for the regular classes judge for 2019 is Helen Graham. The Board has had several discussions about converting the print Newsletter into an electronic one. This would save the club approximately $4,300 a year in printing and mailing costs, but, most importantly, it would allow the club to provide more current information to its members than a quarterly Newsletter. It could be updated much more frequently. We have not worked out all of the details yet and would appreciate your thoughts and feedback as we go through the process. At the suggestion of several club members, the Board has established a Companion Events Committee which is in the process of formation and developing a charter. It will oversee and promote the non-conformation and non-lure coursing activities of the club. I would like to welcome Nancy Leising as our new Board member and to thank Sharon Furlong for her service and hard work on the Board. This has been a particularly sad year with the passing of a number of our members including Don Shepler, Maureen Jones, Don Magee, and Robbin Shea. They were strong supporters of the Saluki and represented many hours of work and dedication to SCOA. Again, I want to thank you for your attendance I wish everyone a great National Specialty. If you have questions or concerns, please speak with me or anyone on the Board. We are all available and interested in your thoughts. Gary Roush, June 2017 Report of the Vice President Brian Duggan noted that he had extended the SCOA s reciprocal catalog ad offer to the regional clubs but at present, only the Saluki Club of Greater San Francisco had accepted the offer to exchange ads.

Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 5 Report of the Recording Secretary Debbie Feliciano reported that the monthly BOD minutes will be downloaded to the members only section of the SCOA website upon approval of the minutes. Ms. Feliciano reported that no nominations from the membership for Board members or officers were received and therefore the slate presented by the Nominating Committee stands. Report of the Corresponding Secretary - No Report Report of the Treasurer Katie Souder distributed the financial reports. Report of the AKC Delegate Monica Stoner reported that AKC will begin counting Veteran entries toward Grand Championship points. Ms. Stoner also reported that AKC is revising their process for re-instating dangerous dogs. Reports from committees: AKC Gazette Columnist - Brian Duggan Carol Fisher asked about including a link to Brian s articles on the SCOA website. Archives - Diana Farmer and Barb King No Report Breeder Referral Michelle Haag No Report Database Liaison Valerie Hamilton No Report. Desert-Bred Education Mary Beth Halsey-Rogers It has been a long and winding road since the inception of this committee in 1989 under Sandra Cody. Our charge was to keep Desert Breds in front of the fancy at the National in a non-political manner as the quest for AKC recognition took place in other venues. While not always easy we have been successful. This year is our 11 th year of printing our catalog to pair with the Exhibition and it features our Generation 3 SPDBS/ AKC dual registered Salukis. The committee extends a warm thanks to all of those who supported this catalog this year, it is quite beautiful and quite a testament to the achievements of our Salukis. Our Exhibition is light on entry this year due to a combination in timing of events with the later time of the National, the early running of the Pyramid Cup in the National week and distances we all face in travel. However, we will have a significant group of Generation 3 Salukis who have shown their ability to compete, indistinguishable from the general population, a testament to the overall preservation of type in the Saluki. As you look at our entrants and at our Salukis, remember, each of these Salukis is NO MORE than 3 steps away from the homelands of the Saluki where the only concern was the ability to hunt. A tradition in place for thousands of years, available now to all here in the US due to the foresight of the members of the Saluki Club of America. Mary Beth Rogers, Chair, Desert Bred Education Committee Futurity Pam Arwood The 2017 Futurity was represented by 22 litters, which produced 119 puppies. Of those, 68 individual pups were entered in the 2017 Futurity. Health and Genetics Cathy Chapman No Report Internet Access Sharon Walls-Heddleston No Report Judges Education Diane Divin No Report Legislative Awareness Linda Deutsch No Report Lure Coursing Tom Cigolle and Carol Fisher Tom Cigolle reported that there were 35 entries for the CAT test which brought in approximately $1100. There were 43 entries for the ASFA trial and 10 dogs for the JC test for an approximate total of $4000. Membership Patsy Hoy SCOA has gained 15 new members this past year and presently there are 5 applications in process. The committee is also in the process of revising the application process in order to streamline it. Newsletter Joanne Klova Gary Roush reported that he received notification from Joanne that the Summer NL will be her last and we will need to replace her.

Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 6 Public Education - Debbie Feliciano Our Saluki booths were awarded a Hound Group 3 and a Hound Group 4 for their awesome Meet the Breeds booths at the Westminster Dog Show weekend in February and the Eukanuba National Dog Show in December respectively. Huge congratulations to all who participated and worked at putting these beautiful displays together. Many thanks to those who took part in these busy events and if you ever have the opportunity to participate in an AKC Meet the Breeds event I strongly encourage you to do so. SIU Liaison Ellie Case No Report SPDBS Liaison Mary Beth Halsey-Rogers On behalf of Mary Beth Halsey-Rogers Gary Roush stated that a catalogue is available for the Desert Bred Exhibition and encouraged members to attend. National Specialty 2017 Russell McFadden On behalf of Russell McFadden Monica Stoner reminded everyone to clean up after themselves and their dogs as well as tending to noisy dogs. Also new title ribbons will be given this year for dogs completing a title. Ms. Stoner stated that the live auction will contain items from Joe Pendry s estate. Patsy Hoy stated that there is a welcome booth to welcome and assist visitors and new comers. Specialty Advisory Monica Stoner Reported that SCOA has not received any National Specialty applications and encouraged members to submit a proposal. Trophy Maintenance Susan Jackson Cyndee Hahn has cleaned and catalogued all the SCOA trophies. Versatility Mary Ann Lillemo The Versatility Committee had 6 new applications submitted for 2017, increasing the total to 36 Versatility applications received, with 34 titles awarded. The Hall of Fame has been updated with the latest Versatility qualifiers and all the owners of Versatile salukis are encouraged to submit a photo for publication on the website. This year was the fifth year that we had the Versatility Conformation Competition at the National Specialty. There were 10 entries for 2017 with Cathy Chapman of Sadik Salukis as the judge. The competition was in a new time slot this year on Wednesday immediately following the Dual Titled Sweeps Competition. The committee is hoping that this time slot will provide more specialty attendees an opportunity to appreciate the Versatility competitors. As in previous years, the participants in the Versatility Conformation Competition will be presented at the award announcements on Friday evening. We continue to accept applications for Versatility titles, for both current salukis and those that have since passed away. The 2 year time limit for submitting applications for deceased salukis was previously rescinded and those applications can be submitted at any time. We encourage members to contact one of the committee members for questions or assistance. Respectfully submitted, MaryAnn Lillemo, Chair Ways and Means Stephanie Gamble All is going well at the Ways and Means table and State Basket Auction. 25 Year Membership Recognition Diane Divin Sharon Walls-Heddleston Julie Zucker Election of Officers and Board Members Three Board Members were up for election in Officers Gary Roush - President Brian Duggan Vice President Debbie Feliciano Recording Secretary Russell McFadden - Corresponding Secretary.

Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 20 Delegate Report DELEGATE MEETING DECEMBER 2017 A main focus of this meeting was introducing the candidates for the upcoming Board Election The Nominating Committee presented: There is one vacancy in the Class of 2019 and three vacancies for the Class of Class of 2019: Ronald H. Menaker, Memphis Kennel Club. Class of 2022: Robert Amen, Greater St. Louis Training Club; Christopher L. Sweetwood, Trap Falls Kennel Club; Harold Red Tatro, III, Fort Worth Kennel Club. Floor nominations, for Class of 2022: Carl C. Ashby, III, United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club; James R. Dok, Gig Harbor Kennel Club; Jan Ritchie Gladstone, Richmond Dog Fanciers Club; Ann Wallin, Atlanta Kennel Club. These candidates spoke at the Quorom, then again gave a three minute summary of their qualifications at this meeting. Limited Registration: there has been concern about AKC removing the option for Limited Registration. The Board did discuss Limited in a general fashion but they would not do away with this option. Treasurer Report: Finances are in better condition, registrations going up slightly. If any member would like a copy of this report I will be happy to send it. COMMITTEES Canine Health: Infectious diseases are increasing due to imports, including leptospirosis, drug resistant heartworm. CHF is discussing with AVMA to reduce import risk. Changing climate also has an effect on disease spread. AVMA is working with some drug companies to identify new strains of diseases and develop effective vaccines. We need to work with the government re: imported dogs. It could help to contact local government concerning health of imports. CHF is conducting a study at a shelter in Minnesota concerning Brucella. The Health Conference videos are uploaded. A Webinar on Cervical Genetics is available to watch, and the OFA website is upgraded. Scholarships and colleges: Scholarships between $1,000 and 5,000, totaling $26,000, have been awarded. The Scholarship goes to the schools, students apply to the school Applicant must have some connection with AKC. If you live near a vet school you could participate in presentations, such as Lunch & Learn. Perhaps ask the Dean of the school to award the BIS trophy, invite students to the show, to see healthy show dogs instead of the AR propaganda. Dog Shows...Canine Influenza contributed to a 30-60% absentee rate, peaking the second week in July. Overall 2017 entry loss total 23,000. Dog Show Rules needs to be updated re: infectious diseases ad veterinarian duties. DNA testing: the number of labs offering DNA studies has skyrocketed; without oversight one can not be sure how accurate the tests actually are. AKC/CHF is joining IPFD (International Partnership for Dogs) with other countries, to create a database of tests available, which labs can run these tests, and establish an oversight of the labs. Carmen Battaglia spoke on Low Entry Breeds, (now 90 breeds) which have less than 3500 entries in a year. 80% of these breeds have less than 1,000 entries. 17 Parent don t hold a National; 5 Parent Clubs have an entry of less than breeds have less than 2 litters per year. AKC registers 7,000 imports, 25% are two breeds: German Shepherd Dogs (most for working) and Bulldogs. Health Statements: As these are received the are entered into the Marketplace, where people go to learn more about breeds. HEARDING, EARTHDOG, COURSING All entries are up except Lure Coursing. Herding numbers include the new Farm Dog Certification (CGC on the farm) Earthdog entries include the new Scentwork program, which is so popular, AKC will contact new Field Reps. The website update will have an improved event search, plus short videos to promote and educate. Clubs need to lead people to places to train.

Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 21 Achiever Dog Program launched DEC 1, recognizing owners and dogs that are working toward titles. At the end of the twelve month pilot program, AKC will contact those who received certificates for input. PARENT CLUB Sheila Goff (Government Relations) spoke on the legislation work. She now has eight people on staff to help us with local legislation. They are monitoring 2,000 bills, have sent out 150 alerts. All owners need to be aware of local legislation. HSUS will start at the town and county level to push their program. AKC can help but we have to also help ourselves. We must be aware of new terminology, including Non Economic Damages, including emotional damage through loss of or harm to our dogs. Many Mandatory Spay/Neuter proposals at the local level include exemptions for AKC Conformation dogs. If neutered dogs can be shown to titles (other than Veteran class at independent specialties) this exemption loses strength. The Archives Department is digitizing old Gazettes and stud books. They will be moving to a new address with more space. LEGISLATIVE CAUCUS: We were fortunate to have as a speaker an Inspector for the USDA, who gave an overview of the work done by and regulations of USDA. They are changing from enforcement to education, and are encouraging compliance in the breeders they oversee. There are 2800 licensees, with 44% licensed to breed dogs are within substantial compliance; 78 breeders are not in compliance, with 168 sites where they could not conduct inspections. Last year 11,000 inspections were attempted, they could not conduct 1,000. They have a dirty 100 list, with 50 not licensed (some of these licenses lapsed); 49 are licensed, 39 came into compliance, 17 are non compliant. Non compliance top three categories: veterinary care; maintaining enclosures; sanitation. Chronic problems can take 5-10 years to close down. A new revision to the rules will not issue new licenses until these breeders have come into compliance. In 2018 USDA will be promoting consistency of inspections; they now have 135 inspectors. They will incentivize proactive care; pet stores can not buy from a non compliant breeder, which will encourage breeders to maintain compliance. A question came up about the Amish breeders. The Amish Community influences those Amish breeders to come into compliance, often helping out where needed. When dogs are rejected by retailers, the breeders call rescue to take the dogs. USDA has explained to these breeders they are supporting competitors since people will then go to the rescue to obtain a dog. USDA is concerned about Retail Rescue, especially as it concerns imports. USDA is dedicating a specific team to this issue, using the Airlines to help control by requiring licenses on dogs prior to allow them on board. Private planes are harder to control. USDA is following up with dogs imported without a license. Guidance documents are on the USDA website. Don t forget to check AKCGR.org for up to date legislative guidelines and information. Respectfully submitted, Monica Henderson Stoner, Delegate ***************************
