Veteran Dogs (12 Yrs. and Older) Veteran Bitches (12 Yrs. and Older) Note: Castrated Dogs and Spayed Bitches are eligible for Veteran Classes at independent specialties and by virtue of winning the class, may compete for Best of Breed. Coursing Class Dogs Coursing Class Bitches For dogs and bitches that are AKC registered and are confirmed lure coursing champions or open field coursing champions. Titles may be from any recognized coursing organization. All entrants must be intact. NOTE: Exhibitor MUST supply proof of eligibility for the class with entry. A copy of the certificate awarding the title or a copy of the ENTIRE PAGE from either the AKC Awards or FAN magazine publishing the title will be accepted as proof and MUST accompany the entry form. Dogs & Bitches will not be entered into this class without proof of title accompanying the entry form. First place winners are eligible for Best of Breed competition provided all AKC eligibility and requirements have been met. Best of Breed Competition: The following categories of dogs may be entered and shown in Best of Breed (Variety) Competition: Dogs that are Champions of Record and dogs which according to their owner's records, have completed the requirements for a championship, but whose championships are unconfirmed. The showing of unconfirmed champions in Best of Breed (Variety) Competition is limited to a period of 90 days from the date of the show where the dog completed the requirements for a championship. AKC Selects for GCH points will be chosen following Best of Breed. Points for Reserve: SCOA has opted into AKC s rule in chapter 16, Section 1 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows concerning Points for Reserve Available. At the National Specialty the dog designated Reserve Winners Dog and the bitch designated Reserve Winners Bitch will be awarded a three-point major, provided that the number of dogs competing in the regular classes of the Reserve Winner s sex totals at least twice the number required for a five point major, in the region in which the event is held. Select Dog, Select Bitch, Award of Merit: Select Dog and Select Bitch are recognized as the top quality of their sex after BOB and BOS have been awarded. As an Award of Merit is a club award and the Select is an official award of the AKC, the Select is of GREATER precedence than the Award of Merit. Awards of Merit are for those Salukis considered for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex, and are chosen after the Select Dog and Select Bitch. Winners Dog or Winners Bitch are eligible, along with all other Salukis which, in the opinion of the judge, would, on another day, achieve Best of Breed or Best Opposite Sex to Best of Breed. SCOA offers a maximum of ten Awards of Merit, of which the Judge may award all, some, or none. AKC National Owner-Handled Series: See Page 17. Best from the Bred by Exhibitor Classes: After Best of Breed, Selects and Awards of Merit are chosen, the winners of Bred By Exhibitor Dog and Bred By Exhibitor Bitch compete for Best Bred by Exhibitor. If Best of Winners is from the Bred by Exhibitor class, that entry is automatically Best Bred by Exhibitor. Best Puppy from the Regular Puppy Classes: After Best of Breed, Selects and Awards of Merit are chosen, the winners of Puppy Dog 6-9 months, Puppy Dog 9-12 months, Puppy Bitch 6-9 months, and Puppy Bitch 9-12 months compete for Best Puppy. If the entry has been defeated by another puppy (Winners or Reserve), the entry is not eligible to compete for Best Puppy. If Best of Winners is from either the 6-9 month or 9-12 month class, that entry is automatically Best Puppy. Saluki Club of America 2018 National Specialty 5

6 NON-REGULAR CLASSES (INVOLVING MULTIPLE DOG ENTRIES) Note: Non-regular classes involving multiple entries may be judged before or after Best of Breed. As the judge s decision in these classes will be based on the merits of more than one dog, no one of the dogs making up the entry judged first in the class will be eligible to compete for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed by virtue of having won the class. Stud Dog Class and Brood Bitch Class: Each entry is allowed two to four get. The merits of the Stud Dog or Brood Bitch are not considered in the placement of the entry. It is the quality of the get that forms the basis for the judge s decision. All get must be examined and gaited. The Stud Dog or Brood Bitch must also be examined to determine if there is a condition that would require disqualification or excusal under the Rules, AKC policy or the breed standard. All get must be entered in a regular class in order to be eligible to compete in the Stud Dog or Brood Bitch Class. Handlers of the Stud Dog or Brood Bitch, and all get being exhibited, must wear armbands. Ch. 11, Sec. 8 of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows provides that a castrated male may be entered as a Stud Dog in the Stud Dog Class and a spayed bitch may be entered as a Brood Bitch in the Brood Bitch Class. Brace Class: Two Dogs, performing in unison, and presented by a maximum of two handlers. Both dogs competing in the brace class must have at least one common owner. Dogs do not need to be entered in any other class. Dogs comprising a Brace Class must be named at the time of entry, and full particulars must be given for each dog on individual entry forms. If a dog which is to be part of a Brace is not entered in another class, it must be entered for Brace Class only. An entry form for a dog entered in another class and entered as part of a Brace must be marked accordingly in the space provided for additional classes as Brace Class. Once the eligibility time frame for that year has passed all participants return to the Open Class to compete for the following year. 23 AKC Code of Sportsmanship PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented. Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs. Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace. Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior. The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors. The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism. The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs. The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge. The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs. Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors. Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport. Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them. Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and weaknesses of their breeding stock. Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them. Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog. Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in the sport. Saluki Club of America 2018 National Specialty 23
