1 B A R K S MAY 2008 Monthly Newsletter of the Glenbard All Breed Obedience Club BRAGS Reno (Rottie) passed his CGC & TDI on March Fox Valley's test. On April 13th he passed his Car-Dun-AL's test. He is now, CH Kinjack's Renegade v Trajan, TD, HIC, TDI, CGC Rand Park's Rally trial on April 26th, Reno (Rott) showed in Rally Novice for the first time. He got his first leg with a score of 99 and a 3rd place. Tinker (Pug) showed in Advanced A for the first time, she got her first leg with a score of 99 and a 1st place!!! Glory (Standard Schnauzer) and I got a Group 3 in the working group on April 19th at Fond Du Lac. There were 15 different breeds in the working group that day. In addition to Glory getting the Group 3 (and Best of Breed), it was from the classes and she is a female. This makes it all the more remarkable. 2 f Relay For Life Thanks to everyone who has supported our American Cancer Society fundraising by buying treats, donating prizes for our raffle and attending our first event. We hope to see all of you at the May 31st Fun Match at the German Shepherd Dog Training Club. Doors open at 11:00 AM and judging starts at 11:30. There will be all levels of Obedience and Rally run throughs plus a chance to win prizes by playing fun games with your dogs. We'll have food and a huge raffle too. It's shaping up to be a fantastic event and with 100% of our proceeds going to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, you can feel good about helping us fight cancer And don't forget about the Agility Run Throughs at Candy Heideman's place on May 17th. We'll sell dog treats there and have a Bake Sale for the human side of the team too. Registration forms for both events will be available at FVDTC, GABOC and GDSTC. You are also welcome to contact Cheri Nichlols, Candy or me for more details too! Lastly, you are all invited to stop by our tent at the Relay For Life event at Glenbard South HS on Friday June 6th starting at 6 PM and going all night until 6 AM the following morning This is where our team will celebrate our fund raising success with all of the other Relay teams. There will be food and entertainment and some very beautiful ceremonies, celebrating survivors and honoring those who are no longer with us. Liz 2

4 More Great GABOC Volunteers Dawn and Dave Parison As we all know, our club has always relied on volunteers for our success. There are so many people who have been very gracious with their time over the years - it just makes me smile when I see them. There are two people who seem to be involved in every aspect of GABOC. They instruct on training nights, they are responsible for the matches, they are on trial committees, and they still train their own dogs! They have served as mentors to fellow trainers, and they are always willing to lend a hand. So, thanks Dawn and Dave Parison you are truly two of a kind. A Grateful Fellow Member GABOC Sanctioned Agility Match Glenbard and agility is it possible? The answer is YES!!! The club has been approved to hold a sanctioned agility match. We must do this before we can hold an actual trial. For those of you who are doing agility it is a great way to practice under show-like conditions with your dog. For those of you who might be interested in agility, the match is a great way to come and see what goes on at an actual trial. For those who are just curious, the match offers a great way to see firsthand the inner working of an agility trial. Are you trying to walk more, do more exercise, get more fresh air, spend more time with fellow dog people? Then come on out and volunteer to work our match. You do not need to know anything about agility all you need is a willingness to come out and learn something new. We will need people to set bars on jumps just think of the stretching this gives you. We will need people to walk the leashes from the start line to the finish line, just think, you will probably walk a mile doing just that! We will need people to walk the score sheets from the ring to the secretary again what great exercise. We will need people to move equipment what great bodybuilding time! As you can see, no experience is necessary for a great number of jobs in an agility trial. Now, for those of you who have agility experience, we need you too! We need experienced people to train the others on the jobs. So, all of you experienced agility people, we are counting on your support. The match is Saturday, July 19 th, beginning at 9:00 AM workers will be asked to arrive around 8:00 AM. The match will be held in Sugar Grove at the SupderDogz training facility. The premium will be available shortly. Fellow club members, Julie Simmons and Donna Darland are the match co-chairs. Club member Beth Elliott is our secretary. More information will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks. 5 April 17 Edward Hospital AAT Program Patty Kaplan welcomes Bill Bateman and Morgan to the AAT team. Animal Assisted Therapy Dogs make people happy. That's why you'll see tiny Yorkshire Terriers and giant Newfoundlands roaming the halls and lobbies at Edward. They're part of the hospital s Animal-Assisted Therapy program. Dogs and their handlers in this program have visited more than 64,000 patients over the last five years. Aside from providing a "touch of home" there are specific therapeutic goals associated with each visit. The visits usually last about five or ten minutes. The effect There's science to back it up, but the bottom line is patients feel better when the dogs are in the neighborhood. Thinking less about their illness also means less anxiety, pain, blood pressure and loneliness How to apply If you and your dog would like to find out more about the program, call (630) ONE FREE RUN THRU THREE AWARD CREDITS Four good reasons to help out as a Steward at the next Match See Dawn Parison to sign up A Pauper s Panache, Am/Can CD, CGC, TDI April 8, 1993-Feb 28, 2007 I am both humbled and proud to report that LEAN ON ME DOBERMAN RESCUE has named its first legacy rescue in honor of Panache. Last Fall, two puppies were found in a box behind Walgreen's located just a few blocks from our home. The police took the two little girls to a nearby vet clinic, and since the pups looked like Dobes, Lean on M e Dobe Rescue was contacted. The puppies were about 7 weeks old and were emaciated, starving, and dehydrated. Little Panache responded to treatment quickly, and moved from the hospital's baby ward to foster care to continue her recuperation. She was quickly adopted and her permanent family kept her name. I was told that "she fits her name very well--she s full of herself, alert, and quite the sassy girl who wants to share her opinion with everyone she meets!" Little Panache's sister did not respond well to initial treatment and continued to struggle. She remained under treatment in the hospital and never made it to a foster home as she was adopted by the vet tech who cared for her during her extended hospital stay. I am honored that Panache and I are connected to these little girls' lives, and I wish them health, happiness, and longevity. Laura Plasketes 5
