1 April 2015 Issue 44 HS CABARRUS ANIMAL RESCUE THE CABARRUS ANIMAL RESCUE NEWSLETTER Inside this issue: Meet our canines 2 Meet our Felines 3 Adoption Updates 4 Events 5 Thankjou 6 Silent Paws 7 Tip of the Month 8 On the Road Again When it rains, it pours. Our pickup truck we use to carry cages, tables, pet food and supplies has gone to pickup truck heaven. The motor finally quit. The SUV used to transport the animals decided to follow suit the same week. The SUV is fixable for now but it became apparent that we needed another transport vehicle. Thanks to Adrienne Jaco and Berry's Auto Clinic on Hwy 73 in Concord we were able to obtain a used cargo van. It may not be perfect but it will get the job done and give us more room then we had before. Also thanks to Willie Moore of Moore Signs for quickly putting our name on the van, it looks great. Stories 9 Volunteers are always needed for the kennels HS Cabarrus Animal Rescue Coiconl,NC

4 Page 4 Issue 44 ADOPTION UPDATES Freckles has been in foster care for almost 2 years. It seems she was always passed over for one reason or another. When she first came to us she was very shy but her foster mom did a great job socializing and of course spoiling her. Apparently, when this family came to visit to pick out a cat to be a new family member, Freckles chose them and put on the charm. We are so excited for Freckles. We would like to thank Anna Yon for taking such good care of Freckles and finding her a great home. Thank you to everyone who has adopted an animals and given them a new and better life. When you adopt you actually save 2 lives, the life of the animal you adopt which then opens up a space for another animal to be brought in for adoption. If you have adopted an animal from HS CAR we would love an update with a picture on how they are doing in their new home. We love those happy endings. Cassie, now Charlie Beau Jest, now Mr. Kitty Cassie was adopted in March 2014 and Beau Jest was adopted in Dec Things are going really weu. They are'friends and play and chase each other around the house all day. We are really enjoying having Beau around. My husband started calling him Mr. Kitty and it stuck. Danielle Bradley

We have come to a point in the year where we're turning off our heaters and opening the windows, the days are getting longer and warmer. Just lil<e us our dogs could use a little help with this transition. This is usually the time when people think they're animals are infested with fleas but it turns out to be just dry skin,in some cases extreme. If your dog or cat seems to be scratching to excess but you don't see evidence of fleas it is probably moderate to severe dry skin. So let's address this and what we can do. First unless directed to by a vet don't over shampoo your dog's. The oil in their skin and coat takes three times longer to replenish than ours does. For this reason don't you shampoo more than once a month or you run the risk of drying out your dog's skin. Even if you're using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Keep in mind when you do wash your dogs that animal shampoos work a little differently and you should leave them lathered up for 5 to 10 min, before rinsing. Some things you can add to their diet to help with their dry skin are foods that are rich in omega fatty acids and vitamin E, Some of these are olive oil about a half teaspoon per 25 pounds of your dog a few times a week. Salmon or fish oils that are designed for your dog's digestive system (not human products). Bananas, about a quarter of a banana per 50 pounds a few times a week as well as raw eggs (not cooked) about a half an egg per 50 pounds a few times a week. Wally Wimmer
