8 Page 8 Issue 54 Tip of the Month Petco Positive Dog Training - Bruton Smith Blvd, Concord, NC Trainer - Wally Wimmer Classes begin weekly, call or come in for details Wally Sundays - Puppy trainer on duty 1pm - 6pm Mondays & Fridays - puppy play time Small breeds - 6pm - 6:30pm Large breeds - 6:30pm - 7pm New class - 5pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays & Saturdays Customer adviser on duty 12pm - 8pm Fridays - Dog trainer on duty 5pm - 8pm Service, therapy and emotional support dogs (commonly referred to as ESAs). Emotional support dogs are simply dogs that make you feel better. They are not in any way protected by the Americans with disabilities act. They cannot go into restaurants or stores or any place else you could not take a common household dog. Some airlines may allow them because it's in their best interest but call ahead and make sure. Emotional support dogs are not service dogs. They do not require any specific training. By this definition almost any dog is an emotional support dog. Then make your life better when you feel sad. Therapy dogs are dogs who had extreme obedience training and can perform well under almost any circumstance in public. Their job is to comfort people other than their owner in an effort to make their lives a little better. The difference between an emotional support dog and a therapy dog is the level of obedience training they receive. Therapy dogs are not service dogs and are not protected under the Americans with disabilities act. They cannot go into restaurants or stores or anyplace including airplanes that a common dog cannot go. Service dogs are dogs who've had extreme obedience training and specialized training to deal with their owners disability or handicap. The difference between a therapy dog and a service dog is the specialized training they receive for their owners benefit. Service dogs are protected under the Americans with disabilities act. They can go anywhere their owners go as long as the mere presence of a dog will not interfere with the flow of business or cause disruption just because they are there. An example of this they can accompany their owner to a doctor's office but may not be allowed at the office of an allergist (the mere presence of the dog at an allergist office may cause other patients discomfort or worse). They can go into a restaurant but not into an open kitchen where food is prepared for the public. There are a wide range of physical and mental injuries, illness, or conditions that warrant the need of a service dog. alert dogs. There are three basic types of service dogs: mobility. Guardian, and alert dogs. Mobility service dogs can improve life of anyone who has had a physical injury or medical condition that no longer gives them full benefit and range of motion (amputees, permanent back injuries, or people with conditions like MS)

9 Issue 54 Page 9 these dogs can retrieve dropped objects provide a solid surface for people to catch her balance open doors or retrieve objects from cabinets. Along with all of this they can be trained to do a wide range of jobs to improve the quality of life for the owner in and out of their home. Alert service dogs are dogs who can picl< up on emotional or physical changes in their owners and warn them of a potential episode before it happens. Some of the conditions that warrant a dog like this would be epilepsy, chronic heart disease, PTSD, people with a high risk of stroke but these are just a few. Not all dogs can be trained as an alert service dog. They must possess a natural ability to detect changes in emotional or physical in their owner. This cannot be trained the dog must have the ability from birth. If they possess the ability they can be trained to give an alert when they sense a change. Guardian service dogs are dogs who are specifically trained to help their owners negotiate the obstacles in their daily life and to detect danger so that they can protect their owners from harm. Conditions that warrant a Guardian dog would be blindness, severe impaired hearing, or severe physical disability (someone who is bound to a wheelchair). All service dogs should be trained to an extreme level for obedience and to be called a service dog they must have specialized training that directly benefits their owner. They should also be able to find help for their owner if their owner becomes unable to move if they are injured or have a seizure. There are no legal standards or requirements for service dogs. The only requirement the government has for a dog to be a service dog is that they have specialized training for their owners disability. There is no tests that they have to pass. There are only two questions a business is allowed to ask when a service dog enters their establishment. They may ask the owner if they have a disability that warrants a service dog. This is a yes or no question. The business cannot ask follow-up questions or require proof. The second question they can ask is does your dog have specialized training for your disability. This again is a yes or no question. They cannot ask follow-up questions or require proof. If you answer both questions with a yes they must by law allow you to enter their establishment. The only exception is if the simple presence of a dog would disrupt their flow of business or cause other patrons discomfort (such as the allergist office). If your dog is not obedience and well behaved they have the right to ask you to leave. You must comply with this request.. There are training programs available and nationally recognized tests you can take with your dog. The American kennel club has their canine good citizen program. And therapy dog international has their own training program and test. These are privately owned companies that have established their own standards. While they are a great way to gauge your dog's response to almost anything they will meet in public they are not the federal requirements. There are no actual federal requirements that your dog will have to pass to be a service dog, therapy dog or emotional support dog. Some establishments may require a canine good citizen certification or therapy dog certification before they allow you to bring your dog into their establishment. These may include hospitals and nursing homes. Whether or not you have the certifications it is ultimately up to the establishment as to whether or not you are allowed to bring your dog on their property. Only Service dogs are covered by the Americans with Disability Act. If you intend to take your dog everywhere you go I recommend advanced obedience training. If you put a therapy or service dog vest on your dog you are telling the public that they have had advanced training on how to deal with crowds and public situations. If your dog were to cause somebody injury by either knocking them over or a physical bite the courts will make an example out of you. When people see that vest they assume your dog is safe to be around. If your dog is not had the training and you put the vest on them you are putting yourself and your dog at extreme risk if there is an incident. You will lose in court.
