1 HUMANE SOCIETY OF GREATER DAYTON Pawsitive Progress Fall 2014 Community Rallies to Help Huckleberry Glenn Heal Imagine being scared. Injured. No one around to help. Your body so badly hurt you cannot stand. You can t move. This was the reality for one dog who came to our shelter. Huckleberry Glenn, a 6-month-old hound mix, was brought to our facility by a good Samaritan after being found alongside the road. We believe he had been hit by a car. He was badly injured. We rushed him to the Care Center where we found out both of his back legs were broken in multiple spots. In addition, his pelvis was broken in three places and his paw had a degloving injury, where most of the skin had been removed. Despite all this, Huckleberry stayed completely calm. He even would take a moment to lick the faces of our staff to show his appreciation. Huckleberry had to undergo two surgeries. He had to have two pins placed into his right femur, a plate and screws placed on his left tibia and also have an FHO, which is a common procedure where the ball of the femur is removed at the hip to prevent hip dysplasia. All-in-all it cost the shelter thousands to provide Huckleberry with the medical care he needed. We reached out to our supporters and we were able to provide him with care thanks to our donors who chose to support Huckleberry on his road to recovery. After surgery, Huckleberry still had to undergo months of rehabilitation and cage rest in a foster home. As they nursed him back to health, his foster family grew more and more attached. We are happy to report that he is now completely healed and on October 17 his foster family gave him a wonderful forever home! There is no greater joy for our staff and volunteers than the moment when an animal we have seen at his or her worst, an animal we have cared for and loved unconditionally has fully healed and is driven away, off to a new forever home. It is one of the most rewarding feelings for all of our staff and volunteers and it lets us know that the work we do is impacting the lives of both animals and people each and every day. However, saving lives, especially animals who come to us through cruelty, neglect or in need of emergency medical care, can be very expensive. Our organization will save every animal we can, but as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institute, we rely solely on donations from individuals, companies and grants to run our programs and services. We receive no sort of government funding and are not affiliated with any other state or national organizations. In 2013, we saved a record number of animals from cruel and neglectful circumstances and this year we are on point to break this number. With countless animals coming to us in need of more in-depth care, we continue to ask for your support. This is why last year, we created our Rescue Fund. Through the Rescue Fund, people can donate as much as they like to help animals who need specialized care on their road to recovery. Animals, just like Huckleberry Glenn, who is featured on the front of this newsletter, come to us in many levels of need. With supporters like you, we are able to continue to help save more animals by providing them with the medical care, shelter and love they need to heal completely. With your support, we are not only helping heal these animals, we are saving their lives. If you would like to donate to the Rescue Fund, please visit rescue-fund or call (937) Checks can be made to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, 1661 Nicholas Road, Dayton, OH Make sure in your memo to designate if you want your donation to go to the Rescue Fund. All money in this fund goes directly to the care of animals with extensive needs and will help our organization continue to save lives. Together, we are making a difference! Sincerely, Brian Weltge, President & CEO

7 Jean Barger Rice Trust Makes Impact on Animals at Shelter Jean Barger Rice was a woman with an enormous amount of energy and a passion for both theatre and animals. Miami Valley Shade Sales Provides Cover for Pooches Recently, Miami Valley Shade Sales, working with Shazeebo, came to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton with a great offer to help the dogs in our kennels. They donated and installed shade sails that go over the outside portion of our kennels. These make it cooler for the dogs as well as protect them from the harsh sun s UV rays. Since they are not equipped to handle loads of snow, each winter the sails will be removed from the kennels and will be installed again each spring. Now, thanks to them, our dogs can enjoy some fresh air in the shade! For more information on Miami Valley Shade Sales, visit www. miamivalleyshadesales.com. Want to Volunteer? Did you know you can volunteer for the Humane Society as early as 10 years old? We are always in need of volunteers for a number of tasks. For info on volunteering, visit or contact Emily Murray at (937) For fostering information, please contact Janie Davis at (937) Primarily, Jean s days were spent teaching, directing and working with area theaters including Wright State University, Sinclair Community College and the former Living Arts Center program through the Dayton City Schools. However, her major theatrical home was with the Dayton Theatre Guild. In 1945, Jean met her life partner Tom Rice. Jean always had a passion for cats and through the years Tom helped her care for many pets. It was this shared passion for animals that made them decide to create a financial plan that became the genesis of the Jean Barger Rice Charitable Trust. Sadly, Jean s last 25 years of life were spent in a slow spiral into near quadriplegia caused by a condition similar to multiple sclerosis. During these years, Jean never forgot about her cats. Her cats would jump onto her bed and show her their unconditional love and support. In September of 2007, Jean passed at the age of 84 and left behind her beloved cats Buddy, Jeannie, Tippy and Little Momma. Wanting to do right by animals, both Jean and her late husband Tom wanted to continue to help animals in need long after their passing. They had a strong belief in providing care for animals, particularly through the spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. Thanks to the generosity of the Jean Barger Ricer Charitable Trust, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton continues to keep Jean s goals alive. With the support of this trust, we re able to save the lives of animals in need within our community. Not only are we improving the lives of pets, but through our spay and neuter initiatives we are also addressing the overpopulation problem in a humane and effective way. Thank you to our 2014 food sponsors!
