1 HUMANE SOCIETY OF GREATER DAYTON Pawsitive Progress Celebrating 115 Years of Helping Pets Spring 2017 Ike and Luke Get Their Second Chance In July, our humane agent received a report regarding two senior Percheron horses being starved. Upon further investigation, she discovered two extremely malnourished horses named Ike and Luke. They looked like two walking skeletons. Unaware as to why the horses were losing weight, our humane agent worked with the owner to get the horses into a veterinarian immediately. The vet placed the horses on a very strict diet and initially the owner followed the guidelines. However, after a few month of progress, the horses began losing weight again. At this point, the owner was prepared to euthanize them. Instead, we found a rescue organization who specialized in the care of large breed Draft horses. The rescue, located a few hours from Dayton, drove down to pick up Ike and Luke so they could take them into their care and give them the specialized treatment they needed. BEFORE After six months of special care, Ike and Luke are now doing amazing! You can no longer see their ribs. Between the two of them, they have gained more than 1,000 pounds. They are healthy. They are happy. They have received their second chance. Recently this dynamic duo packed up their suitcases and headed to a sanctuary in Florida where they will spend their lives in the warmth of the sun. They are now safe and loved! AFTER What s Inside? Thanks to all of you, we ended 2016 thrilled with the fact that more than 1,800 animals were placed or found loving forever homes! In addition, more than 3,600 animals were spayed or neutered during the year, which helped to fight overpopulation in our community. Lastly, thanks to the hard work of our humane agents, we ve investigated almost 250 cases where animals were in cruel or neglectful circumstances. Thousands of animals came through our shelter and were impacted thanks to the work you enable us to do for the Miami Valley in Since 1902, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton has been the animal welfare organization for you. We are the oldest and most-established shelter in the Miami Valley and work hard to ensure all animals are valued and free from suffering. We are proud to be this community s leader in animal care and are excited for the growth we have planned in 2017 to better serve this wonderful community and all of the people and animals in our area. In 2016, we revealed our vision for the future through our UnLeash the Change campaign. Since then, we have continued to make great progress in turning this vision into a reality. We are continuing to meet with members of our community to expand all aspects of our operations, which will in turn provide us with the opportunity to give more animals forever homes, protect more from cruelty/neglect and substantially impact the cat overpopulation epidemic plaguing the Miami Valley. As progress continues on our Vision for the Future, we are energized and motivated to work with each and every one of you to be the voice for the voiceless. We are proud to call each of you a member of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton s family and are eager for the opportunities that await us in 2017 to support you and your animals even more! Sincerely, Brian Weltge, President & CEO 2 When I look into the eyes of an animal I do not see an animal. I see a living being. I see a friend. I feel a soul. - A.D. Williams

3 What s Happening at the Shelter? Furry Skurry Named Best Charitable Race in Dayton We are thrilled to announce that Furry Skurry has been named the Best Charitable Race through Dayton Magazine! We are beyond thrilled and want to thank all the volunteers and people in attendance who make this event such a great success every year! Mark your calendars now! We hope you will all join us on Saturday, May 27 for the 26th annual Furry Skurry & Furry Fest! Cats Get New Digs Thanks to Joanie Bernard Grant! The cats at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton are moving on up! Thanks to funding through the Joanie Bernard Foundation, our cats will have more spacious cages to reside while they stay with us at the shelter. This will give them more room to explore, a separate area for their litter boxes and individual ventilation systems. The glass fronts and enclosed spaces will also provide needed soundproofing to keep them calm and relaxed while in our care. Thank you so much to the Joanie Bernard Foundation for your generosity and for helping us make these cats feel even safer in our shelter! One Lucky Person Wins 2016 Subaru Impreza In December, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton partnered with Subaru of Dayton and gave one lucky person a new 2016 Subaru Impreza. For the raffle, we were able to sell 1,545 of the 2,000 tickets we had available and raised more than $22,000 for the animals at our shelter! We look forward to working with Subaru of Dayton again to offer you a raffle this year, so stay tuned! MeowZa Adopts Out 3,000th Cat at Location The MeowZa Cat Boutique, located inside the Dayton Mall, has been in operation helping cats and kittens find forever homes since This offsite adoption location is run primarily by devoted volunteers. This past year, we are thrilled to report we adopted out the 3,000th cat from this facility. That means that thanks to you, 3,000 cats have found forever homes! Volunteers Build Shelters for Community Cats In November, we had a group of 10 amazing volunteers come together for a workshop so they could learn to build cat houses for stray cats in our community! In just 2 1/2 hours, this group build 22 houses that are insulated and will help keep community cats warm and safe from the cold! Visit for more information on how you can help the animals at our shelter! 3

4 Plan Ahead and Leave a Legacy The Legacy of Care is a valued and special group of people who believe in the Humane Society of Greater Dayton s mission and who choose to help us continue to build a community where all animals are valued and family life in enhanced through pet ownership. However, after only a month in his new home, his family had to return him to us. Can you provide a new, permanent home to one or more homeless cats? Help give a cat a second chance by opening your heart and barn. These types of cats may not fit well into a home environment, but they make ideal residents for farms, stables, barns and other suitable locations with outdoor shelter available. All cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and ear-tipped prior to being placed into a new home. The Humane Society of Greater Dayton will provide guidance to make the brief transition from our shelter to your location a success. If you would like a barn cat for your location, please Mackenzie Phillips at mphillips@hsdayton.org. What is a Barn Cat? A barn cat is a feline who lives in a barn-type structure, this can be barns, stables, garages or other outdoor structures. The cats have a caretaker who provides food, water and shelter. The cats may be either socialized and friendly or unsocialized. Your Responsibilities Are? If you accept a barn cat, you would be responsible for providing them with daily food and water, shelter from weather and long-term veterinary care. 7
