This sweet dog was abandoned in our dog park in terrible shape. He was emaciated and dehydrated so badly that you could see virtually every bone in his body. In addition, he was completely covered in fleas and if that wasn t enough, he tested positive for heartworms. Although he was in pitiful shape when he was left here, he is now getting the best care possible because of your support! On behalf of Champion and hundreds of other animals in critical condition that make their way to the Humane Society to get help, thank you! This year we are proud to say we ve saved a record number of animals who have dealt with severe injuries or cruel and neglectful circumstances. Animals like Wendy the cat who suffered from a severely broken pelvis as a result from being hit by a car; or Forest the two-year-old Dachshund that was paralyzed in his hind legs and discarded on the side of the road; or Newman, the dog that was being starved and was abandoned in a house still locked in his crate; or the 137 birds seized from awful living conditions and circumstances at a facility in Moraine. The stories go on and on, but all have a familiar theme. They are all stories about animals that have found themselves in harm s way. They didn t deserve to be treated so poorly, but with your support, the Humane Society has given them a second chance at life. Your Humane Society of Greater Dayton helps animals like this every day! We take pride in transforming their lives so they can be happy and healthy again. As the area s largest no-kill shelter, we want to be able to continue the life-saving work for animals that wouldn t have a chance at survival in other shelters. Emergency, life-saving care is expensive and as a nonprofit, we do not get any government or county assistance. I would like for you to consider an investment in our new Rescue Fund. This fund will be dedicated to help with emergency, life-saving procedures for animals that have been severely injured or who are severely ill. All of the money donated to the Rescue Fund will help animals just like Champion, Forest, Wendy and Newman. We have a goal of raising $50,000 for the Rescue Fund by the end of the year, but we can t do it without your help! To donate to the Rescue Fund, please visit or call (937) Thank you for caring about our community s animals! Gratefully, Brian Weltge, President & CEO

4 Keep Your Pets Safe This Fall Season Fall can bring some fun and exciting holidays including Halloween and Thanksgiving, but these fun times for families can be dangerous or harmful to your pets. Here are a few tips from our experts to keep your pets safe during the fall festivities: 1. Chocolate is a No-No Chocolate, especially dark chocolate or baker s chocolate can be very dangerous to your pets. Also, candies containing xylitol, an artificial sweetener, can cause problems for your furry friends. If you think your pet has injested something toxic, call your veterinarian as soon as possible. 2. Avoid Pumpkins Although these popular decorations can be fairly nontoxic to your pets, if nibbled on, they may make your pet s stomach a little upset. In addition, if you carve pumpkins and then light them with candles, make sure and keep them out of your pet s way. A curious kitten or puppy can easily knock over a lit pumpkin or get too close to the flame. 3. Watch Decorations Stringing up lights or using other electronic decorations can add some personality to your home. However, be sure and secure your plugs and cords so animals will not be tempted to chew on them. If a cord does gets chewed, your animal runs the risk of getting cut or burnt. They could even get a life-threatening electric shock, so be careful. 4. Costume Caution If your pet is one of the hams that loves to dress up make sure you put them in a costume that is safe. You do not want costumes that constrict the animal s movements or make it difficult for your pet to breathe, bark or meow. If your pet doesn t like wearing a costume then don t force it to, it just causes unneeded stress. 5. ID Your Pet Whether you are out for your daily stroll or trick-or-treating, one thing every pet needs is to be properly identified. Make sure your pets have on their identification tags. Another added security is getting your pet microchipped. This way, if your dog or cat does get loose, you will have a greater chance of someone identifying you as the owner and returning your pet safely home. Changes Underway at MeowZa Cat Boutique Are you a cat lover who wants to share your love of cats with the rest of the world? Well, we need your help! The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is looking for volunteers to help run and operate the MeowZa Cat Boutique, a store-front that has been located in the Dayton Mall since The store has adoptable cats available along with cat merchandise. In the past, the store has had part- and full-time staff to help run the day-to-day operations, but we are now relying soley on volunteers to operate this location. If you are interested in volunteering your time to help find loving, forever homes for cats and kittens in need, contact Caitlin Lewis at (937) or her at clewis@hsdayton.org.

5 What to Ask a Rescue Before You Foster a Pet Fostering a pet can be a wonderful and amazing experience to help save the lives of animals. However, before you choose to foster with the Humane Society or any other shelter, here are a few questions you should ask: About the Pets: 1. What types of animals does your organization take in? 2. Where do you typically get your animals? 3. What is the normal in-take process for when animals come to you? 4. Do you conduct assessments on a pet s personality before you place them into foster care? 5. Do you have trainers to help with behavior issues? 6. What are your adoption fees? About Medical Care: 1. Do you provide all medical care prior to fostering animals? 2. Do you provide heartworm or flea prevention? 3. Do you have a vet on staff? 4. What should a foster do if an animal needs emergency vet care? 5. Do you spay/neuter before placing into foster care? About Fostering: 1. Do you have a staff person focused solely on fostering? 2. What supplies do you provide fosters? 3. What is the organization s expectations of fosters? 4. How long are pets typically in foster care? About the Organization: 1. Are you a state-registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization? 2. Do you have any paid staff? 3. Do you have liability insurance? About Adoption: 1. Who is your typical adopter? 2. Do you have restrictions on who can or can t adopt an animal? 3. Are fosters involved with the adoption process? About Community Outreach: 1. Do you have adoption days? If so, who is responsible for transporting foster pets? To learn more about fostering, call Janie Davis at (937) Wet Noses, Happy Hearts Thank you to everyone who brought their dogs out to this year s Wine, Washes and Wet Noses event at A Taste of Wine in Miamisburg. Square One Salon and Spa, A Taste of Wine and T.J. Chumps sponsored this year s event and as the day was filled with splashing in the sun, it seemed all the pets left happy and squeaky clean!

Couple Donates Van to HSGD Thank you so much to Dan and Nancy Drozd who graciously donated their van to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton after purchasing a new van. We bought a new van and this one still works great so we decided to donate it, said Nancy, who volunteers for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton as well. If you have a vehicle you would like to donate to the Humane Society, contact Jim Summers at (937) Plan Ahead and Leave a Legacy The Legacy of Care is a valued and special group of people who believe in the Humane Society of Greater Dayton s mission and who choose to help us continue to build a community where all animals are valued and family life is enhanced through pet ownership. Through planned, charitable gifts that can be made in a variety of ways, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is able to ensure our future viability and community impact. Programs include wills and bequests, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, life insurance, charitable lead trusts, retirement funds and outright gifts. By consulting with your tax advisor, you can determine which of these options is best suited for your particular circumstances and charitable objectives. Leave a legacy and help future animals in need! For more information, please contact Brian Weltge at (937)

7 Children Stepping Up as Donors At the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, we are always grateful for all of the supporters we have, but recently we have noticed an even more inspiring trend. Lately, children have been showing their giving nature by donating supplies and money to help the animals right here at the Humane Society. Rather than getting birthday gifts, they have chosen to ask their family and friends to give them pet supplies or donate cash that they collect and bring directly to our organization. This giving quality at such a young age is so inspiring to us and words can t express how thankful we are for each of them!
