1 A Publication of the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club September 26, 2007 President Ed Knudson, Special Edition! Look inside for the photo gallery from Tuscany at Twilight! October 3 Program Dr. Jean Fuller State Assembly October 10 Program: DARK Club Assembly: Staying on Track Meeting Notes President Elect Jim Bell and partner in crime Dale Bender joined forces to welcome one and all and denude them of their cash on Wednesday morning. Bill Black opened the meeting with an invocation, and Darin Blunt most capably led the flag salute (a more challenging task than it might first appear, given our plethora of flags). During guest introductions, Mike O Doherty demanded to know why Hajir Nuriddin always gets to go first, to which President Ed Knudson replied, Because she s armed. Turns out Mike Stepanovich has been lured to Bakersfield College from CSUB by President Ed and Co. with a fine to be negotiated. (Excuse us? Our administration is going secretive. We may have to get a court order to open the files.) But congrats, Mike now he s got you coming and going! You d assume that Ann Fonseca was a novice in the club instead of a vet- -continued on page 2 Hajir Nuriddin (right) pulls out the cuffs after Fine Mistress and County Animal Control Director Denise Haynes cites Past President Cecil Martin (center) for auctioning a live puppy at Tuscany at Twilight. Jim Bell is an accessory to the crime he purchased Emma, the golden retriever puppy. No good deed will go unpunished in the BBRC! 2 The Beacon September 26, 2007 Page 2 Meeting Notes continued from Page 1 eran. When asked how it was that her guest showed up at 6:15 a.m. instead of 6:45 a.m., and whose mistake it was, she answered, I don t know and blamed the guest. That s a double fine. Never blame your victim in this club! (It was probably Ann s gotcha to friend Ruth Gentelia (pictured below on the right with Ann), who won the Tuscany at Twilight opportunity drawing and will be winging her way to Tuscany soon.) Carl Leech is fine-free, as he smugly informed those who wanted him fined for the big screen TV he recently received as a gift from another club member (geez, the corruption is just rampant this week!). President Ed promptly put his fine in accrual to be levied in Wonder what the rate of interest is? Najir didn t get a chance to pull her gun, but she DID get a chance to pull her handcuffs out when Fine Mistress Denise Haynes read the riot act to Past President and Tuscany organizer Cecil Martin and poor Jim Bell. It seems it s not legal to auction pets in public settings in Bakersfield, and Cecil provided the lovely Emma (renamed from Ellie May), golden retriever puppy extraordinaire, to be auctioned at Tuscany. Jim Bell paid $750 for the little beauty, and suffered the indignity of a $50 fine and public humiliation as a result. (Cecil got off scotfree, first because he spent a lot of time and money of his own putting together Tuscany, and second because he s just too pretty to go to jail.) President Ed reminded the assembled that District Conference is October 5th through 7th in Bakersfield, opening with an all-club barbecue on Friday, the 5th at the Kern County Museum. BBRC members will be reimbursed for Friday s lunch (just bring in your registration form to show you paid for the meal) in lieu of the October 10th meeting, which is DARK. Dan Johnson, under the aegis of Membership Director Bret Cross, introduced New member David Brest makes an impression. new member David Brest to the club. In his opening speech, David managed to cover enough material for a year s worth of fines, leading President Ed to look forward most alliteratively to ripe fertile fields for fines in the future. And we finally got down to Club Assembly, with directors following President Ed s instructions to keep it short and sweet. Secretary Carol Smith spent a few minutes talking about make-ups and the importance of keeping up attendance...treasurer Denise Knudson proudly announced (with a bit of help from Cecil) that we netted in the neighborhood of $75,000 with Tuscany at Twilight A total of 456 people attended the great event (see pictures on pages 3-14), and 447 opportunity drawing tickets were sold. Sarah Baron (International Service) announced that plans are underway to select an international site and conduct a site visit, probably in Mexico. Darin Blunt (Club Service) announced an upcoming Fireside Chat. Mike Turnipseed will be chairing the monthly Diner s Club in the coming months, and Mike Stepanovich will be putting together another wine tasting tour According to Laurie Price (New Generations), 15 Foothill High students and 4 Golden Valley students assisted at Tuscany at Twilight; she is recruiting BBRC members to assist Foothill with a highway cleanup on October 13th. Lynn Hall, Program Chair, announced that we will have an off-site meeting at Golden Valley High on October 24th Lynn is requesting an RSVP from members planning to attend so that she can order food. Last but not least, Community Service Chair Marlene Heise announced the MANY upcoming service opportunities (see page 1) for BBRC members. Marnie Clark joins dad Michal to talk about the Buddy Walk. A gentle ending to the meeting was provided by Mike Henstra s guest, Dr. Michal Clark and his daughter Marnie, who pitched the Buddy Walk to raise awareness of Down Syndrome. See Mike for details!
