1 A Publication of Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club September 13, 2006, Volume 10 The Service Sector TIME CHANGE ALERT! We will be roofing Habitat for Humanity homes - September 24 th at the Kern County Fair and on September 30 th in Arvin. We will begin at 7:00 a.m. rather than 6:00 a.m., given that we need to see what we are doing! We are down to our last few weeks of the used book drive for local preschoolers. So far we ve collected 500 books! Keep up the good work! Questions can be addressed to Sarah Baron, barons@bcsd.com. We still need cooks and servers at the September 23 rd Hot Dog Feed at CHW Learning Center, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Persons interested in helping should Gary Fachin at gmfachin@arrival.net. Evening in New Orleans is coming up on November 4. The committee meets after each Wednesday morning meeting. It s not too late to be of service on this important fund raiser! Julie Gibson, GVHS Activity Director & Julia Kennedy, GVHS Interact Advisor, have invited BBRC members to attend Golden Valley's first official Homecoming game being Ridgeview HS on 9/29. The Kids on the Block: Puppets with a Message By guest writer Sarah Baron Denise Haynes presented The Kids on the Block, an award-winning educational program created in 1977 by Barbara Aiello, a special education teacher in Washington, D.C. Ms. Aiello used puppets in the classroom to help non-disabled children understand and accept their newly-included disabled classmates. Her program proved to be remarkably effective and The Kids on the Block, Inc. was launched. Here locally, Hearts Connection coordinates the many troupes of puppeteers who go into 4 th grade classrooms. Denise explained that research indicated that this age group was the most receptive to the information and entertainment. Puppeteers perform a wide range of topics to raise awareness and understanding of individuals in circumstances that may make them seem different : for example, people with disabilities, those dealing with medical issues, or those coming from different social backgrounds. -continued on Page 3 Marlene Heise and Mickey Hawley are heading up the Bear Drive, collecting small bears or other stuffed animals for children in the community who are in crisis. Bring in those items to help our club succeed at this District project. The animals should not exceed 10 inches in length.
2 Meeting Notes (by Guest Editor Neil Walker who is heaving a sigh of relief that it s almost over ) President Larry Mueller, looking far more presidential than last week, welcomed the members to the September 13 th meeting. Doug Longhorn Burns, after suffering tremendous humiliation because of the Buckeyes trouncing of his Steers, actually showed up even after proclaiming his team to be invincible. Truth is, Doug had invited a guest, Steven Kandel, to the meeting... The only visiting Rotarian, introduced by PP Cecil Martin, had traveled just a few miles to make up at BBRC. John Ibanez belongs to another breakfast club... Guam Sunrise. We could exaggerate and say John heard about our GREAT club and booked a flight just to visit his Bakersfield counterparts. However, the Four Way Test requires the truth... John was visiting his sister, Cera Hardin, a Bakersfield resident. John is a banker at the Bank of Guam. Kay Pitts and Randy Merriman were exemplary greeters except for one small exception... they issued the winning opportunity drawing ticket to the county s tax watchdog, Michael Turnipseed. Don t forget to claim your windfall on tax day, Mike! John Ibanez, a Rotarian from the Guam Sunrise Club, is pictured with sister, Cera Hardin, whom he came to visit. How about sponsoring an exchange program, Mr. Prez? An outstanding invocation was delivered by Joe Nunez, followed by the pledge led by Lori Malkin. Carol Smith conducted the BBRC minstrels in a beautiful rendition of America the Beautiful accompanied by Kiwanian Wendell Kinney on the ivories. The club was honored to be visited by other visitors. Katrina Ricker hosted two folks from Golden Valley High School, Julie Gibson and Julie Kennedy. As our New Generations Director, Katrina is working with both Julies to charter an Interact club on this new high school s campus. Please talk to Katrina if you would like to assist in this noble effort. Katrina unfortunately arrived AFTER her guests resulting in the Fine Masters assessing her a tidy little sum of $10. A former member of BBRC joined the festivities today hosted by Becky Smith. USMC Major, Zack Bennett, moved from Bakersfield about a year ago arriving in New Orleans just before Hurricane Katrina came ashore. Zack (shown pictured with Becky and Jerry Saba) expressed his pleasure in being back home and with his Rotarian pals and gals. Tim Cox introduced his beautifulist daughter in the world, Emily Cox. Emily was raising funds for her school selling mags. [Tim reportedly left his cell phone in his car this week lest its inopportune ringing cost him further pain from both the Fine Masters and wife Susanna.] President Larry announced that Susan Eaton is doing well following recent surgery. He also told us of the misfortune of Past District Governor, Dr. Otto Austel who is recuperating after falling from a ladder in a home accident. The Fine Masters, PP Howie Wass and Jerry Saba were back with a vengeance this week after President Larry had grounded them the prior two weeks. The two of them swooped in and quickly and surgically removed dollars from unsuspecting prey. Shaun Kelly was slapped $50 for shanghaiing Mary Jo Pasek to his company. Past Presidents Carl Leech (in absentia) and Mike O Doherty paid dearly for new advertising signs on Rosedale Highway. New member, Bill Black, couldn t engineer his way out of a $15 fine for misplacing his new Rotarian material and pin. Scarlett Sabin has again been nabbed for not doing her television spots with her Rotary pin donned. Not so with Mike Stepanovich who was spotted on early morning TV with his Rotary pin proudly sparkling on his left collar. Mike remains fine free according to Howie. -continued on Page 3 Page 2
3 The Kids on the Block -continued from Page 1 Denise works with Katie Whittington who is a physical therapist with Terrio Fitness. Jogging and swimming friends, they also are a team of puppeteers. The Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club was treated to an entertaining puppet show featuring Reynaldo, a blind boy, and his new friend Brenda. We pretended we were 4 th graders, which was not hard for some of us to do! And we got to ask Reynaldo questions. What talent! It was both educational and entertaining. For more information about The Kids on the Block, contact Denise at haynesd@co.kern.ca.us. MEETING NOTES -continued from Page 2 Once again, the guest editor feels obligated to disclose information over which he inadvertently stumbled. Last year s EINO grand prize winner, Ed O Donnell, remarked in an extremely non-contrite manner that he would not be able to attend the roofing projects because he and wife Shirley will be cruising to Cancun. Ed bragged that on their recent cruise to the Bahamas, they used up only half the value of the EINO grand prize travel package, so alas, they must do it again!! Knowing that his braggadocio comments reached the editor s ears, he quickly tried to mend his slippage by saying, What great advertising for our EINO fund raiser! The Fine Masters will need to determine if any damages have occurred. Greg Desme is distributing 2 dinner tickets and 2 raffle tickets to each member to use or sell for Evening in New Orleans. If your company can sponsor this event, contact Karen Wass. Get in touch with Becky Smith to donate items for use in the silent auction. The Diners Club met on Tuesday night at Noriega s and a fine time was had by all who attended. Put the second Tuesday of each month on your calendar for an evening out with fun and fellowship at different eateries in the community. Marlene Heise and Mickey Hawley are heading up the Bear Drive collecting small bears or other stuffed animals for children in the community who are in crisis. Bring in those items to help our club succeed at this District 5240-driven project. The stuffed animals should not exceed 10 inches in length. It s coming. The Gala Event of the Year!
