3 Welcome to Durham Nation 2017! What a year it s been. Every year we seem to talk extremes and this year was the epitome. From watching our peers to the west selling cows in June, sale barn pens filled to excess, and trucks and trailers lined up for miles on end in front of them, there were times I wondered if I would even be writing this letter, and, if so, under what pretense. I recall reading a piece regarding the drought and how the author had quit praying for rain and started praying for the families whose livelihoods and life s work hung in the balance, all due to mother nature. Not only them, but the businesses on main street, schools, equipment dealers, elevators, banks, all of whom were being impacted in return. I believe it had merit, and, trust me, I prayed for them as well, but never stopped praying for rain. In early August those prayers along with countless others were answered. Pastures that I hoped would just green up actually grew. Crops that appeared too far gone are now being harvested. Cattle that I thought may have been either shipped or hauled much further south to feed are still grazing, nursing healthy, heavy calves, and the cattle market rebounded yet again. These last few months have served as a stark reminder that anyone involved in this industry must not be faint of heart. Sometimes, it s all you ve got. If I m confident about any one thing, it s that our operations and anyone involved with them, have an incredible amount of heart, determination, and dedication. It s those qualities that drive our commitment to the betterment of the Shorthorn breed and their contribution to the beef industry as a whole. On October 28th, 2017 at 6 p.m., there will be an impressive set of Shorthorn and Shorthorn influenced cattle on the block, backed by the aforementioned qualities that in turn make them what they are; functional, low maintenance, trouble free cattle of quality. While our role in providing them to you, the customer, is important, it s not the most important thing. What s most important to me is all of the relationships we have developed over the years, seeing the sale barn standing room only, and knowing that we provide a setting for great people to enjoy fellowship, cattle, and take a well deserved break from an occupation that tries us daily. To say it was a success would be an understatement. The original Vicky s, Sara s, Patty s and Adelaide s were selected on that trip and are the foundation of some of our best cows at the ranch. I will never forget Bill McLean trying to talk me out of buying 68K because he didn t know if she had enough power.(sometimes I wonder if he just wanted to keep her for himself). She was not the biggest yearling heifer in the pen but she was the widest and deepest. Her influence highlights Durham Nation 2017 with a direct daughter, a granddaughter that could be the best cow to ever sell on the Durham Nation Sale, their daughters and other descendants with breed leading quality. Terms And Conditions: Terms of the sale are cash. Settlement is to be made with the clerk immediately following the sale and before cattle are removed from the premises. Billed Accounts: All billed accounts are due within 10 days following the date of the sale.
