2 Dedicated to Jim Stuart ~ Find some place you can make a difference, every little bit helps, you and everyone will be better for it. ~Jim Stuart For Jim, adopting Luna was a life-changing event and it inspired him to contribute absolutely countless hours of volunteer work to make sure that others in our community would always have the same opportunity. Jim served on the Homeward Bound Board of Directors for two six-year terms. During his tenure, he always kept his eye on the organization s long-term stability and sustainability and was a tireless champion of the shelter s community programs. In addition to holding onto his vision for the organization, Jim provided us with day-to-day IT support and created and maintained a custom database for the shelter. In addition to his work on behalf of Homeward Bound, Jim will always be remembered for his devotion to family, friends, work and colleagues at Middlebury College, his love of his and others dogs, and his associations with fellow shelter volunteers. To anyone who knew Jim it would not come as any surprise that he would say his favorite part of volunteerring was making a difference to a worthy cause and meeting lots of other great, thoughtful, and caring people. It was an honor and privilege to work with Jim and the staff and Board of Directors continue to be inspired by his legacy of compassion, generosity, and commitment. We are honored to dedicate our 2017 Annual Impact Report to the memory of Jim Stuart. Without a doubt, this organization would not be what it is today if Jim hadn t gotten involved in the late 1990s. Jim began volunteering with Homeward Bound after being introduced to the organization through one of its founders, Eunice Van Vleck. Shortly after becoming a volunteer, Jim adopted his dog Luna.

4 Volunteers Help one another. There s no time like the present, and no present like the time. ~ James Durst Diane Quiet began volunteering in May 2016, just one month after retiring from UTC where she worked for 20 years. She comes faithfully three afternoons a week to spend time with cats awaiting their forever families. As retirement was approaching, I knew that volunteering with cats at Homeward Bound was the one thing I wanted to do. I think it s a great place and I want to do whatever I can to help support all the wonderful work, services, and programs Homeward Bound provides to the animals and community. When I arrive, I first greet my favorites and then turn my focus to those I think need attention or any special requests from the animal care coordinator. I talk with them, sit with them, just spend time with them. I try to visit each community room as well as any condo cats that are hiding and need some help with socialization. I also chat with potential adopters who inquire about the cats that I know well. One of my favorite success stories is that of Duke. He was at the shelter for almost a year. He was really skittish and it was hard for him to trust people. If you moved your hand the wrong way it would startle him. To see Duke make progress and get adopted and then to see pictures of him so happy is just great! If I can help a scared cat feel safer and more confident, that is what it s all about. I want to make things more positive for these animals. You can t explain what has happened to a surrendered cat, but you can try to make it better for them. ~ Diane Quiet Friends of the Animals: Sustaining the work of Homeward Bound Our Friends of the Animals have a tremendous impact on the welfare of animals in Addison County. They are a core group of supporters that contribute monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually to sustain the work of the shelter. Their gifts are put to immediate use each month to feed, vaccinate, microchip, spay/neuter, address the medical needs of the animals in our care, and keep the doors of our state-of-the-art facility open to all who need us! Our Friends program has grown from 18 members in 2014 to 61 in 2017.

Friends of the Animals Animals feed my soul. Any time that I hear about animal abuse, it feels like an arrow has pierced my heart. Some time ago, an abused old dog found his way to me.

5 Friends of the Animals Animals feed my soul. Any time that I hear about animal abuse, it feels like an arrow has pierced my heart. Some time ago, an abused old dog found his way to me. I called Homeward Bound late on a Friday afternoon. They stayed open greeting us with hugs and then tears when they saw the shape this poor dog was in. This sweet dog's last hours were spent in a warm place surrounded by love. I have been an extremely grateful supporter of the Friends of the Animal Program at Homeward Bound ever since. We are so lucky to have them in our area! Their countless programs, care and support of animals, outreach to the community, and ability to re-home so many animals comforts my soul. All that they do for our furry friends helps to soothe the grief that, to this day, I still feel for the loving dog who entered my heart on that long ago dark Friday afternoon. Every dog is a gift! Pictured above is my little Havanese, Brenny, who knows he is my greatest gift ever! So when my husband and I moved to Vermont in 1998, starting a relationship with the local animal shelter felt as natural as checking out the local grocery store, bank, natural food co-op, etc. I get so much emotional return from seeing the impact of my financial support and the time that I am able to give. But at the end of the day I think the biggest heroes are the staff that work tirelessly caring for and loving all the animals that pass through the doors of Homeward Bound. ~ Leslie Blow Annual gifts from our donors are hugely important to the operation of Homeward Bound. The collective support of those who share our concern and compassion for animals make it possible for us to fulfill our mission to educate the community and improve the lives of animals, alleviate their suffering, and elevate their status in society Legacy Giving My late wife, Pat, was a huge animal lover and very stubborn. Throughout our 36 years of marriage, I gave in every time she wanted to take in another animal! My planned gift to Homeward Bound is a tribute to her. When the time comes, my legacy gift will be used where it is needed most at the shelter; whether it be for medical needs for shelter animals, humane education camp scholarships, food for the Pets Eat, Too program serving pet-owning senior citizens, or the like. ~ Richard Laframboise Legacy gifts like Richard s will ensure that for many years to come, Homeward Bound can say yes when the animals with the greatest of need arrive at our shelter. It is also a meaningful way to honor a loved one and say thank you to every animal that has touched your life. Those who include Homeward Bound in their long-term charitable planning are recognized as members of the Homeward Bound Legacy Society. Within a week of learning about the situation, we found ourselves taking in 28 animals and being asked to care for them for an indeterminate amount of time while the criminal case worked its way through the courts. As usual, the staff rose to the challenge but what really touched us was the outpouring of volunteer support that came our way. People who donated time and skill to help seize and examine the animals, people who helped to bathe them and scrub cages, people who donated requested supplies and, most of all, the strong people who took animals into their homes to foster them during the long months of awaiting the outcome of the case. These people, listed below, opened their homes and hearts to animals in need while fully understanding that the fate of those animals was unknown. We are enormously grateful to these brave souls. For 115 days these folks waited and hoped. Then, on Monday, January 29, 2018 cheers abounded when the Addison County State s Attorney s Office called to tell us the animals were ordered to be surrendered to Homeward Bound. And many of the animals foster homes became forever homes!
