3 Judging Profiles Darrell Newkirk, CFA Allbreed Judge, Purssynian Abyssinians In 1984 my wife Beth and I decided to explore the world of purebred cats. We had no idea of cost or standards, but we looked in the paper and bought a "show quality seal tortie point Himalayan. We named her Peaches Premonition and prepared to set the world on fire with our new love. However, fate would intervene, for our perfect Nisha was not quite perfect. She had the dreaded tail fault and a nose like a fox terrier! Happily, we figured this out before ever entering her in a show and next set our sights on obtaining a silver Persian. As we visited a local cat show in late 1984, we saw our very first Abyssinian and the rest has become our history. We fell in love with a blue male Abyssinian, Dearabi Hillstreet, who was bred and owned by Halsey and Cornelia Tichenor of Dearabi Cattery. But our first purchased Abyssinian was Van Dyke s Abi Alexis of Purssynian, a ruddy female, bred by Lila Rippy. Our second acquisition was a one year old blue female bred by Cher Gagnon, Cher-Non s Ruffian. She was very handsome, but did not have a warm undercoat color. She did eventually attain her Grand Champion title, but it took several shows and a couple of litters before she completed her Grand. Ruffian was one of the early Blue Abyssinians to grand. Our first stud was a ruddy named GC Dearabi Tai-Grr-Man. Cornie Tichenor of Dearabi Cattery was a great mentor to us in those early years. She had concentrated her efforts with dilutes, especially fawns, and she was very generous and shared much of her dilute Abyssinian breeding knowledge. When Dearabi Hillstreet became a stud, we used him with Ruffian for several breedings. GC Purssynian Reggae Strutt was the most prominent of that breeding. Reggie had a very light undercoat color, but he was able to pass on to his offspring a warmer undercoat color than his own. We have continued to breed Abyssinians since those early years of our venture into the Cat Fancy. We exhibited our cats in ACFA and CFA in the beginning. Since 1994 we have exhibited and registered our cats only in CFA. We have achieved 5 DMs (distinguished merit awards), including 2 fawn males: GC Purssynian Sunhawke, DM and GC Purssynian Jambe Finete, DM, Jammer. We have shown over 35 Abyssinians and other breeds to Grand Champion status and produced a number of National color winners and Regional winners. When I decided to become a judge, we knew we had to bring several more breeds into our home. We worked with Cornish Rex approximately four years. Other breeds who have shared our home briefly include Scottish Folds, Maine Coons, Birmans, Somalis and of course, Persians. Our first Persian was a Bluecream, GC Windsur s Athena. She created quite a stir at the first show where I exhibited her. We also exhibited a Copper-Eyed White Persian kitten, RW Windsur s Dulcinea of Purssynian, to a CFA regional kitten win. We also had one Bicolor litter of kittens from Biloe s Nellie. Two of her offspring granded: GC Purssynian Domino Lisa and GC Purssynian Judy in Disguise. Beth and I are the owners of GC Purssynian Jambe Finete, DM. Jammer as he is known by his many friends is the CFA registered cat that has produced the greatest number of Grands of any breed in CFA history. Jammer has produced 62 Grand Champions and Grand Premiers. Unfortunately Jammer passed away in July 2011 from liver failure. I entered the ACFA judging program in 1990, advancing to All breed Training Judge and remained there until April I was accepted into the CFA judging program at the June 1995 CFA annual meeting. I was licensed as a Shorthair apprentice judge in February I entered the Longhair training program in October I was advanced to approved All breed judge in June Professionally, I am a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. In 1974 after completing a four year term in the U.S. Air Force, I was accepted into Three Rivers Nursing Program and competed my RN training in May I entered and completed a course of study in Nurse Anesthesia in I completed my undergraduate education in 1986 at Webster University with a major in Nursing and a minor in Business Management. I have enjoyed employment in a group of 18 Nurse Anesthetists and 37 Anesthesiologists for the past 15 years. Becoming a CFA judge has allowed me to view much of the world I would otherwise not have known. I have had the pleasure to be invited and have judged in Australia, Japan, Russia, the Ukraine and Europe on several occasions over the past 16 years. It is a wonderful experience to travel to other parts of the world to share with other breeders and exhibitors our common goal - the advancement, improvement and preservation of our beautiful purebred cats. On April 25, 2011 I said goodbye to my best friend and wife of almost 32 years. Beth became sick in February and in March was diagnosed with an aggressive type of brain tumor. She passed on her 58 th birthday. Currently I sit on the CFA Board as a Director at Large. 4 Jan Walker Rogers, CFA USA I began in the cat fancy in 1987, when I went to my very first cat show in the USA. I fell in love with the beautiful Birman cat, and it has been the heart of my cattery since. I have been fortunate to have bred some outstanding Birmans, and enjoy to this day, having had the first both male and female Grand Champion Lilac Point Birmans in all of CFA, worldwide. I continue to breed Birmans, and have an occasional litter of American Wirehair kittens. In 1999 I started my journey in the judging program for CFA. I am proud to be an all breeds judge in CFA. I have enjoyed traveling to shows, and most importantly, being able to share my love of the cats with others. I am eager and interested in other cat fancy associations, and each provides unique insight into our common bond, the cat. I have worked diligently to educate the public in our hobby. Never have I left a show hall without learning something new about our cats, and the different breeds, and for this I am grateful. I have been blessed with many cat lover friends around the world who have shared their vision and their cats with me. It has brought me profound understanding and respect of all the hard work that so many people put into our hobby. I am a graduate of Purdue University (BS in Agriculture) and Indiana University (MBA in Finance) and have run my own business since Currently I serve as the American Wirehair breed council secretary for CFA, and also hold many official positions in several CFA clubs. I continue to be active in the cat fancy. I also work with breed rescue, pedigreed cat rescue. I enjoy working with education and pet therapy in nursing homes and schools while continuing the promotion of the pedigreed cat, and all cats, wherever I travel. I am honoured to be included in the shows in your country, and wish you continued success in the cat fancy. If there is anything I can ever do to help in the future, please don t hesitate to call. David Scadden - NZCF My wife Jacqui & I have been breeding Birmans under the Magwai prefix since 1985, after obtaining our first queen Ch. Shinoto Zamira from Rosemary & Barry Wilson in Te Aroha. We both originate in the Wairarapa in the sunny South Eastern part of the North Island of New Zealand. We bred Birmans for a number of years in Lower Hutt and shifted back to the Wairarapa in A change of employment has seen us move to Rotorua, in the Bay of Plenty this year. One of the major tourist destinations in the country, the scenery is striking and we are very central to other cities and beautiful destinations. We have bred a wide variety of Birman colours over the years - Sealpoint, Bluepoint, Chocolatepoint, Lilacpoint, Seal Tortiepoint, Blue Tortiepoint, Redpoint and Creampoint. We tend to specialise in the Chocolatepoint and Lilacpoint colours. Our other great love are our Bengals, which we originally imported into the country in 1996 and are breeding under the LapLepid prefix. We have a wide variety of Bengals, including Brown Spotted & Brown Marble. These cats were from top overseas lines and we are delighted to have had the very first Gold Double Grand Champion Bengal - LapLepid Sandzabar. We do very limited showing and breeding now a days, with a young family and other interests to allow for. We have three children - Rachel (16), William (14) and Jeremy (9), which keep both of us pretty busy. Other interests include good wine, genealogy, music and Ford Capri's. I started judging in 1992 and reached the status of All Breeds in 2005, learning a great deal about all aspects of felines along the way. I really enjoy judging and try to talk to and educate the spectators as much as possible on the various breeds. I feel that a cat show has to be entertaining and informative. I enjoy meeting fellow cat fanciers from around NZ and other parts of the world. I have had the privilege of judging all three National shows in Australia and New Zealand over the past couple of years and would love to be able to judge felines in other countries in the world. Scott Andreson CANT Known widely as Scoot, I grew up in the far north of New Zealand, and always had a passion for animals, cats in particular. I moved to Alice Springs in 1990 and became involved in the cat fancy when I met my wife Liz, who bred Siamese at the time. Eventually I commenced training in Group 3, joining the ACF panel in 2005, and extended to All Short Hair in In 2013 completed my Group One training and became All Breeds in I have had the pleasure of judging in all states of Australia and look forward to judging in New Zealand in Today we enjoy breeding a small number of Burmese, under the Cleveland prefix. Sue Barr CAT Sue has judged in all states as well as Malaysia and NZ. Sue became a Group one Judge in 1991 and All Breeds Judge in Sue has owned / bred Cornish, Persian, Siamese, Burmese, Ragdoll and Maine Coons. 4 P a g e A C F N A T I O N A L S H O W - M E L B O U R N E

5 Janis Christison QFA Janis has always been fascinated with cats and can clearly remember her first cat Josie, a grey tabby, her constant companion as a small child. Janis entered the cat fancy in Canberra in 1976 showing a Persian neuter. Her prefix Santique was granted the same year in Canberra and she bred blue, cream and blue cream Persians for many years until moving `home` to Queensland in In 1991 she began an Exotic programme from first generation breeding in most colours and patterns but always on a small scale. Many major awards were achieved over the years including Group 1 Cat of Year awards in 1987, 1990 and Each time with a blue Persian! Janis currently has no entire cats having dedicated the last 15 years to caring for her retired show and breeding cats and now gives all her love and care to her young neuters, an Exotic and a Russian, which have brought her back to the fun of showing. Janis grained her Group 1 judge s licence in 1991, Group 2 in 2000 and Group 3 in 2001, all with QFA Inc. and has judged in all Australian States and Territories and regularly for many Clubs all over New Zealand. In 2011 she judged in Germany and the Netherlands, in 2012 in Malaysia and in 2013 in Sweden and 3 shows in South Africa. Janis is currently President of QFA Inc. having served as a Vice President since 2005 and has been a Tutor Judge since Janis is president and a Foundation Member (1999) of Flash Felines Inc. and is a Life Member of the ACT Longhair Cat Club whish she served for many years as Vice President and Secretary. Fiona Cooper CATS NSW I have bred Siamese, Orientals, Foreign Whites, Burmese, Devon Rex, Scottish Folds and even a litter of Abyssinians under the Fioric prefix over the past 26 years. I have been a regular exhibitor for over 25 years and have exhibited in most parts of NSW and occasionally interstate. My first Maine Coon litter was born in 1999 and I ve bred these amazing felines since then under the CoolCoons prefix. I ve imported several of these cats from the UK, Norway, the USA and quite a few from New Zealand. I have enjoyed considerable show success with CoolCoons cats and kittens having won many Best Group 1 Exhibit and Supreme All Breeds Exhibit in Show awards as well as NSW CFA Kitten and Cat of the Year Awards. I ve owned and/or bred Cat or Kitten of the Year in all 3 Groups with NSW CFA since I first began exhibiting. I gained my Group 3 judges licence in 1999, followed by Group 2 in 2003 and I completed my Group 1 training in 2008 and have enjoyed judging in most states of Australia, in New Zealand and South Africa and transferred all those Licences in 2013 to CATS NSW. International Assignments New Zealand, South Africa Tony Hurry CATS NSW Our feline friends have been a part of my life since early childhood. Even an asthmatic allergy to cat hair couldn t lessen my love, devotion and involvement with cats. Aged 13, I was granted my Breeder s Prefix, Kalinya introducing me to the pleasures and heartaches of breeding and showing Siamese. During my teenage years as a junior member of Illawarra Pedigree Cat Fancy I worked as a Steward and wherever else I could be of assistance. My breeding and showing life was only interrupted for a longer than expected period by my human breeding programme. Resurrecting my Kalinya prefix in 1990, I resumed feline breeding with firstly a "rescued" lilac Burmese then British Shorthair and since 1991, my first love, Siamese. Promoting our cats around NSW has been and continues to be of immense pleasure. In 1996 I successfully passed my Steward s exam and now thoroughly enjoy working in this role handling and learning about all the breeds and meeting and working with all of my fellow Cat enthusiasts. I am a member of Riverina, Illawarra and Highlands Cat Clubs and have taken many roles with each of them including Club President, Club Secretary and Show Manager. By gaining my Judges Licence for Group 2 (2003) and Group 1 (2007), I have given myself an opportunity to share my knowledge and training with exhibitors and to continue to promote the responsible ownership and breeding of cats. Kingsley Schmidtke - GCCFSA I received my first Burmese pet cat in 1980, whilst still in Primary school and within twelve months I started breeding Burmese under the "Lemarie" Prefix with my parents. We showed regularly and I started getting involved with the clubs and running shows. Between 1982 and 1998 I managed at least 1 cat show annually, and helped at many others. From 1986 I had my own prefix "Kasleo" and continued breeding Burmese and later British Shorthairs (with the occasional Scottish fold litter) until The next step was getting my Judging Licence, passing OFS in 1998, and BFM in 2002, to complete the national Group 3 requirements. Due to work and life commitments I took a step back from breeding and showing in 2000, but continue my interest in Felines through Judging. I now, with my wife, share our home with a border collie/kelpie, who keeps us on the go! Cindy Grimes - GCCFV I have always had a cat in my life since I was 2 1/2yrs old & they have been my best friends. I became involved in the cat fancy since 1997 when I started showing desexed Spotted Mist cats (aka Australian Mist) as they were known then. I bred & showed Australian Mists from 1998 to 2008 under the Djindi prefix. In 2004 I got captivated by the beautiful soft curly coat of the Selkirk Rex & commenced breeding them in 2005 under the prefix Purrcurls. I have also bred Exotics/ Persians & British Shorthair litters under the Djindi prefix. I have been involved with all aspects of show organisation & I have been a qualified steward since I have been a committee member & assistant secretary of the GCCFV from 2008 till April 2014 & I have been the Group3 Registrar since I commenced an All Shorthair Judge s course with the Group 3 section starting in October 2008 & completing in November 2010, then the Group 2 section went from March 2011 to November I qualified as an Open Judge in June 2014 & am now listed on the ACF National Panel of Judges 5 P a g e A C F N A T I O N A L S H O W - M E L B O U R N E

6 Janet Overton - GCCFV My love of Siamese began in 1988, which then progressed to the show ring, as well as showing Siamese [a Seal Point] I acquired a Black Oriental. I have successfully bred both Siamese and Orientals under the prefix of Campari. Having enjoyed many major wins with both, I now have ventured into showing Bi-Colour Orientals. I obtained my Judging Licence for Group 2 with the Feline Control Council [Vic] in I have judged in Victoria and Tasmania. I am a retired Accountant who is now thoroughly enjoying my hobby. Having hosted many judges from all over the world it made me realise what a close community we really are and the sharing of ideas has been invaluable. I have judged, many times, in every State of Australia and overseas which has allowed me to keep up with many old and valued friends in the Cat Fancy and to see, first hand, the many new breeds recognised I the U.S.A. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my position in the Cat Fancy, aside from judging, is the opportunity to assist those fanciers who have sought my help and advice over the years and this has given me great satisfaction. Due to constant travelling I was no longer able to participate as a breeder but for years we were owned by really wonderful Abyssinian neuter/spays. Dr. Kerry Fowler GCCFV Good day, I am a fully qualified All Breeds Judge with GCCFV and ACF, commencing with my Group 3 license in 1995, followed by my Group 1 and 2 licenses in 2004 and January 2013, respectively.
