4 Further Definitions Within a judging category, each cat fits into its proper place in the following sub-categories: Longhair or Shorthair - (Does not apply to HHPs) Breed: British Shorthair, Persian, Russian Blue, etc. Division: Within Persian Breed (Solid Color, Tabby, Parti-Color, etc.) Within specific breeds in which cats are shown in two different coat lengths ( for example: ABT, AC, JBT, SF, Selkirk Rex, LaPerm, Manx, Orientals, etc.) (Does not apply to all breeds) Gender: Male or Female (Neuter or Spay) (HHPs have only this sub-category) Color Class: Copper-Eyed White, Black, Blue, Red, Tabby, etc. Class: Novice, Champion, Grand Champion (Championship) Novice, Premier, Grand Premier (Premiership) 4

21 Show Mechanics There are 3 things to be mindful of regarding show mechanics: 1. Know precisely what the awards are 2. Know precisely what the awards mean The awards in a CFA show mean exactly what they say! 3. Know which cats are eligible for which awards 21

22 Show Mechanics Awards DO mean exactly what they say: Best Cat is better than all other cats in the show 2 nd Best Cat is better than all other cats in the show except for Best Cat Best Solid Color Persian Champion is better than all other solid color Persian champions but not necessarily better than all Persian champions in the show A cat cannot receive an award if it has been defeated at that show by any other cat competing for the same award If the Seal Point Siamese number 345 was Best of Breed, the Blue Point Siamese 350 that was Best of Color Blue Point cannot be Best Cat in your ring! 22

28 Show Mechanics Best Champion/Premier Brown For Championship and Premiership, you must select the Best Champion/Premier: If the Best of Breed/Division is a CH / PR, then also give If BOB is not a CH/PR, but the 2 nd Best of Breed/Division is a CH/PR, then also give Orange Black White Blue If neither the Best or 2 nd Best Breed/Division is a CH/PR, then the Best CH/PR of Breed/Division must be: 1. Best of Color which is a CH/PR 2. 2 nd Best of Color when Best of Color not a CH/PR 3. The AOV class only receives 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, Best of Color, and 2 nd Best of Color ribbons. They are not eligible for Best of Breed and 2 nd Best of Breed and they are not eligible for finals. 29

There is only one color class. They are not eligible for Best of Breed and 2 nd Best of Breed. Kittens, Championship and Premiership are judged separately. 30

31 Show Mechanics - Miscellaneous Judging a Miscellaneous Breed is also a special case: - Cats judged in the Miscellaneous class do not receive any awards. They are examined by the judge with a dash marked on the judging sheet (see above) to indicate that they were handled. The exhibitor is responsible for providing the judge with an evaluation form for both the Miscellaneous and Provisional classes. The judge should complete the and give it to the Master Clerk along with all other paperwork. 31

35 Class awards marked by the clerk in the catalog: As the judge hangs the ribbons, the clerk should record the awards for each cat. The Clerk MUST NEVER mark the catalog based on the judge s sheets! 36 Marking the Judging Sheets If the cat has been judged, but receives less than third place in a class, mark a dash. Example: If a cat is absent, mark with A. Example: A If the cat is in the Miscellaneous class, cats judged should simply have a dash even if the club provides ribbons. Example: If the cat was bred by the judge, it is not eligible to be judged in that ring. In that case the judging sheets should be marked with xxx. Example: XXX If the cat was bred by a trainee working with the judge, it IS eligible to be judged in that ring by the officiating judge. The TRAINEE can not handle such an entry and should mark his/her judging sheet with xxx. Example: XXX 36

Remember: A cat cannot receive an award if it has been defeated at that show by any other cat competing for the same award. If the Best Cat is Best of Breed/Division For cats in places 2 to 10: If the cat is BB If the cat is 2 nd BB and BB is placed higher in the final If the cat is Best of Color and the BB and 2 nd BB are placed higher in the final If the cat is 2 nd Best of Color and the BB, 2 nd BB and the Best of Color are placed higher in the final If the cat has another class award and the BB, 2 nd BB, and no other cat in the color class has a higher award (including Best/2 nd Best of Color) If this is a Kitten Final, You re Done! 44 Marking Judging Sheets - Finals For Championship, you must select the top 3 Allbreed (AB) champions, top 3 Long Hair (LH) and top 3 Short Hair (SH) champions. For Premiership, you must select the top 2 Allbreed (AB) premiers, top 2 Long Hair (LH) and top 2 Short Hair (SH) premiers. Final Add the cat s class titles to the final list: NV, CH, GC for Championship NV, PR, GP for Premiership Final GC GC GC CH NV GC GC CH CH CH 44

46 Marking the Judging Sheets - Finals After all the Champions (or Premiers) are placed in the Champion table, you may have to select additional Champions (or Premiers) to complete the final. Use the breed summary sheets and the judging sheets for the selections In this example, 2 additional SH CH are required. Within a Breed/Division: Best CH (BCh) of Breed/Division If the BCh has been chosen CH, then 2 nd BB if it is a champion If the BCh has been chosen (and 2 nd BB if CH), then a best color if it is a CH If the BCh has been chosen (and 2 nd BB if CH), then a 2 nd best color if it is a CH and the best color chosen Another CH as long as the CHs who have beaten the CH are also selected OK OK OK OK OK 46

48 Marking the Judging Sheets - Finals Here s a example of an Allbreed Championship Final. The breed summary sheets are on the next page. Checking the Final from the Best Cat, Cats #90, 30, 37,78,53, 63, 34 and 46 are all Best of Breeds for their Breed/Division. No other cat has defeated them. Cat #48 is 2 nd BB with cat #46, BB, ahead of it. For Cat #47, we have to examine the judging sheets for Bi-color Persians summarized here. We see that cat #47 was only defeated by cat #46 (BB) and by cat #48 (2 nd BB). The first CH is #90, so it is Best AB CH. # 90 is a SH and must be Best SH CH. The next CH is #37, 2 nd Best AB CH. #37 is LH and is Best LH CH. Next is #53, 3 rd Best AB CH and 2 nd Best LH CH. Next is #63, 2 nd Best SH CH. Next is #47, 3 rd Best LH CH. We need one more SH CH (3 rd Best SH CH). Looking at the SH breed summary sheet, we could use #58, #80, #85 or #88, all BCh. Let s choose the Siamese # Done!

52 End of the show After judging has been completed and the last final is finished, the judge should give the ring clerk the final sheet. The judge may not leave the show hall until the Master Clerk has signed his/her final sheet. The Master Clerk will check the finals awards and return the pink copy of all Breed/Division sheets and the Finals Awards sheet to the ring clerk to give to the judge. Once the pink sheets are returned, the chief ring clerk will provide a fully marked catalog to the judge. The ring clerk may give the judge a clerking evaluation form. Complete it and return it to the Master Clerk. 52
