As we move into autumn, we anticipate the vivid colors appearing on the trees and the crisp, refreshing feel of the breeze. We have had an enjoyable, eventful summer, and we thank you for your continued support of the council and the clinic. As students make their way back to class, we also reflect on our mission to educate all individuals about the critical issues of animal welfare and pet care. Our lives are linked to the internet, with all the benefits and challenges that may bring. While some choose to limit their connection as much as possible, far more see the world wide web as their first source of information and education. We may have learned the hard way that faulty information and lies abound in cyberspace, but we should also recognize the vast wealth of quality information available. When used responsibly, the internet can be far more trustworthy than the tales, rumors, and speculation you hear from many friends and family! Here are sites that are established and maintained by knowledgeable professionals. They are a great way to find answers to your questions and educate yourself more on a variety of animal topics:

2 When searching the web, always be sure to check the source of information, read the "About Us" tab, and remember anybody with a computer or a phone can post something on the internet! Educational Opportunities One of the main goals of the AWC is to be a resource and provide information and education to the community about pet care. Whether it s working with a group of 4H teens to discuss the need for spay/neuter, speaking to a group of adults in the community about Lyme Disease, or working with area youth to help lessen the frequency of dog bites, to name a few, there are individuals available to speak to your group about animals and their care. To arrange for a speaker to come to your group, call the Allegheny Spay and Neuter Clinic at Considering Declawing? When a cat's claws become destructive or dangerous for an individual or family, they may consider the option of declawing. This surgical procedure uses either a blade or a laser to remove the third digit of each toe, generally on the front feet. Rarely, back feet are also included. This elective surgery requires general anesthesia, modified litter during the recovery period, and post-operative antibiotics and pain medication. While training a pet can be challenging, there are various methods and products that can effectively modify this behavior before the last option of surgery is necessary. Aluminum foil or plastic wrap may be placed on a commonly scratched carpet or sofa. Deterrent sprays can make certain areas or rooms undesirable to the cat. Acrylic nail caps (such as "Soft Paws") blunt the nail tip and can physically prevent destructive scratching. Most importantly, provide plenty of toys and scratching posts to give your cat an acceptable way to engage in natural feline behavior. A thorough discussion with your veterinarian is important prior to choosing the route of declawing. Meet Keeter Pet ID: Breed: pit bull terrier mix Age: 8 1/2 yrs. Color: brindle Gender: spayed female Size: large Keeter was an owner surrender because her previous owner wasn't allowed to have her where he lived. She is an eight year old Pit Bull Terrier mix. She is a big lug who loves to have her belly rubbed. She will need a little leash training but she loves to cuddle up with you anytime. Swing out and spend some time with this big beauty as she hopes for a new home!!

3 Meet Simon Pet ID: Breed: terrier mix Age: 9 mo. Color: black/white Gender: male Size: medium Simon came to us as a stray from the Morris Twp Area. He is a young nine month old Beagle/Terrier mix. He is a little shy at first but does warm up once he spends some time with you. He likes to go out for walks. He would do better in a more quiet laid back home. He is a cute little bugger and would make a great new friend for someone. Stop out and spend some time with him as he hopes for that new forever home soon!! Meet Willa Pet ID: Breed: domestic short hair/mix Age: 5 mo. Color: black/silver Gender: female Size: small Willa, Wynona, Kodiak and Grizzly were found stray in the Mahaffey area and the woman who found them was not able to keep them. These little cuties are full of energy and will keep their new families entertained with their silly antics. They all have nice personalities and when they have had their fill of play they're always looking for a lap or shoulder to snuggle on. These sweet little babies are ready to meet their forever families. If you have been thinking about adopting a kitten, there is no better time than the present! Meet Reggie Pet ID: Breed: domestic short hair/mix Age: 1 yr. Color: grey/white Gender: neutered male Size: small Reggie is a handsome boy looking for his forever home. He came to us as a stray from the Curwensville area. This sweet cat loves to snuggle and would make a great pet for almost any home. Stop out and meet Reggie soon we know you'll fall in love.

Gift certificates are available for spaying and neutering. Items can be dropped off at the clinic during business hours 8:00 AM 4:00 PM - Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays. 6 Save the Date - Upcoming Events: October 14th - CRC Fall Festival October 22nd - Central PA Pets Expo October 28th - Pit Bull Awareness Day (Happy Paws Happy Homes) 2017 Be Kind To Animals T-Shirts Youth Design Contest Winners Named Noah Troxell - age 6, Madison Elizabeth Howe - age 8-9, Isabella Walls - age 11, and Jeremiah Bloom - age 15 are the winners of the 2017 Be Kind To Animals T-shirt design contest sponsored by the Animal Welfare Council/Allegheny Spay and Neuter Clinic of Woodland. The contest was open to all youth aged 6 17 years; drawings focusing on the Be Kind to Animals message were received from multiple school districts from well over 200 youth in Spring This is the fifth year that the Animal Welfare Council has sponsored the contest. The council hopes that the contest will highlight this important message and educate area youth about being kind to animals. T-shirts with the winner s designs will be available for sale after June 17 at the Allegheny Spay & Neuter Clinic 1380 Shawville Hwy Woodland They make great gifts and are a great way to support the efforts of area youth and needy animals.
