1 AWC NEWS AWC News A Newsletter of the Animal Welfare Council/ Allegheny Spay & Neuter Clinic For friends of animals Summer 2017 Animal Welfare Council/Allegheny Spay & Neuter Clinic Shawville Hwy, Woodland, PA visit us on Facebook Centre Hall Satellite General Potter Hwy, Centre Hall, PA Hello Summer! What a beautiful time of year, with the sun shining and the lush, vibrant colors of trees and flowers in full bloom. This can be a great time for outdoor adventures with your furry companions or a time to simply revel in the sun together. Whatever the case, remember to consider the issues that warm weather brings for your pet so we may all enjoy this time together with health and comfort. AWC Board of Directors and Allegheny Spay and Neuter Clinic Staff

2 8 Things You Can Do to Protect Your Dog in the Summer 1. Never, ever leave your dog in the car; 2. Make sure your dog has unlimited access to fresh water; 3. Make sure your dog has access to shade when outside; 4. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day; 5. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like asphalt) because it can burn your dog's paws; 6. If you think it's hot outside, it's even hotter for your pet make sure your pet has a means of cooling off; 7. Keep your dog free of external parasites (fleas, ticks) and heartworms consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet; 8. Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to your veterinarian first to see if it's appropriate for your pet), and apply sunscreen to your dog's skin if she or he has a thin coat. source: Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Doggone 5K/10K/Fun Walk successful!! Plenty of dogs with their humans took on the challenge of this event, and we are grateful for the generosity of all who participated, sponsored, and volunteered! Partner Organization Spotlight: Central Pennsylvania Humane Society (CPHS) We have been grateful for the opportunity to partner with the CPHS by providing spay and neuter services, as well as transportation to and from the clinic. This shelter, located in Altoona, states its mission as follows: "To prevent animal neglect and cruelty through education and enforcement while providing a safe haven and finding forever homes for those in need." We truly appreciate the level of organization and clarity that is the standard in working with this shelter. The individuals involved in the daily operation of this facility are compassionate, focused, and hard-working. Please visit their website at: Educational Opportunities One of the main goals of the AWC is to be a resource and provide information and education to the community about pet care. Whether it s working with a group of 4H teens to discuss the need for spay/neuter, speaking to a group of adults in the community about Lyme Disease, or working with area youth to help lessen the frequency of dog bites, to name a few, there are individuals available to speak to your group about animals and their care. To arrange for a speaker to come to your group, call the Allegheny Spay and Neuter Clinic at
